Scripture Readings June 28, 2020
13h Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: 2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16a A woman in Shunem believed strongly in the holiness
of the prophet Elisha. To reward her, Elisha promised
that she and her aging husband would, within the year,
be the parents of a son.
Second Reading: Romans 6:3-4, 8-11 Paul explains to the Romans that by immersion in
water at baptism, they “die” to their sins; by rising from
the water, they rise from “death and sin” to new life in
Christ.
Gospel: Matthew 10:37-42 With simplicity, Jesus tells his apostles that everyone
should love him above all others -- father, mother, son
or daughter. He adds, “He who welcomes you,
welcomes me.”
From the Desk of Fr. Jared
Farewell For the last five years, I have been blessed in so many
different ways in my ministry at St. Catherine’s. The
priesthood is truly gift and mystery. Whereas I am sad
to depart from St. Catherine’s, I take great joy and pride
in the accomplishments that WE achieved together.
My goal as pastor is to enable each of us to have an
encounter with our loving God. We do so through
spiritual, service, and social opportunities. Together
we have created an environment that is not simply a
building or an institution, but a vibrant and flourishing
family filled with the Holy Spirit. The beautiful thing is
that I believe we each feel the presence of the Holy
Spirit: the joy, love, peace, faithfulness, and goodness.
What a great gift that is. Nobody can take that away
from us.
Thank you for allowing me to have an encounter with
Christ. I have done so through the celebration of the
sacraments. In addition to the hundreds of Masses
celebrated and confessions heard, I have had the
graced privilege to witness 14 Marriages, celebrate
124 First Communions, 81 Baptisms, 91 Funerals, and
11 adult Confirmations. I am truly grateful to you and
God for these opportunities. Getting to know so many
of you personally has strengthened my faith and
challenged me to be a better priest. The staff have
been incredibly supportive and dedicated. To them, I
have the most gratitude. It takes many hands and
minds to create a flourishing community. As I have
said many times, we are a parish family. There is no
doubt.
Each time we celebrate the Eucharist, heaven and
earth meet. We are united with all of the saints, angels,
and loved ones in heaven. We are also united, or
brought into communion, with the 1.2 billion Catholics
around the world. Therefore, as I leave, know that we
will never be far from one another. Please pray for me
as I will pray for all of you. Trust in the providence of
God. Remember all the good that we accomplished
and look forward to all the good that is yet to come.
Peace,
Fr. Jared
