EIGHTEETH SUDAY I ORDIARY TIME AUGUST 3, 2014
Dear Parishioners,
This weekend’s Gospel story tells us a lot about what it means to be Church. The
Apostles come to Jesus telling him that there’s a huge crowd following who have
nothing to eat, suggesting that he send them away to get food. They are concerned
about the needs of the people but they aren’t too anxious to do anything about the
need themselves. Jesus knows full well that he is able to miraculously solve the
problem and is very willing to do so but first he demands that the disciples offer
what they can. What they have is very little but it is nevertheless what God has
blessed them with. When they put what they have at the service of the Lord he
miraculously transforms their small portion into a feast for thousands.
Jesus has left us all behind to be his Church, to continue his presence and work in
the world. We are not just to ask him to do miracles although he can but rather to
offer what we have to be of service to others and let him multiply it for the good of
others. We are not passive observers but actors who do our part in his kingdom.

But they said to him, "Five loaves and two fish
are all we have here." Then he said, "Bring
them to me," and he ordered the crowds to sit
down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and
the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said
the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them
to the disciples, who in turn
gave them to the crowds.
