ONE LORD, ONE FAITH

Do you suppose the authors of the four Gospels were aware of today’s first reading from the second book of Kings? Of course, they were. The prophet Elisha fed a hundred men with twenty barley loaves to prove God’s power. This same miracle, now mul-

plied by more people fed by fewer loaves, is a ributed to Jesus in all four Gospels. In today’s passage from John, we even have the detail that the loaves were barley, reminding every pious Jew of that miracle that Elisha worked. Yet Jesus went into hiding when they wanted to make him king. It is the passage from Paul’s Le er to the Ephesians that gives us the reason for this. The power of Jesus comes from God. It is not meant merely to feed us, or to provide one group with a king. There is one Lord, one faith, one God and Father of all who works through Jesus Christ and through us all. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Preface Dialogue “Lift up your hearts.” “We lift them up to the Lord.” “Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.” “It is right to give him thanks and praise.” With this ancient dialogue we enter the Eucharistic Prayer, the heart of the Mass. These venerable words have been part of the Christian liturgy almost from the beginning—by the time of Hippolytus of Rome (c. 215) they were already fixed in the liturgy. Several times during the Mass the priest has invited us to pray. There is something different here. We are invited to be “lifted up,” to ascend, to climb the Lord’s mountain, as it were, to go to a new place for this most solemn part of the Mass. And we are invited to a new frame of mind, a sense of joy, of focused dedication: our hearts must not be cast down, but lifted up, and

lifted to the Lord. Why? Because we are going to give thanks—we are going to eucharist!” It is right and just that we do this. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Vatican has today released Pope Francis’ message for the first World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, which will be celebrated on Sunday 25 July on the theme ‘I am with you always’ (Mt 28:20). Welcoming the message, Catherine Wiley, Founder of the Catholic Grandparents’ Association said, “We are overjoyed to read the wonderful message that the Holy Father has offered to us for the first ever World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly in which he is reminding us that the whole Church is close to us as Grandparents and Elders. The confidence of Grandparents has been affected by the pandemic and

even though the world is gradually opening up again, there is a nervousness amongst many Grandpar-ents and Elders about returning to the way things were before. They need time, patience and encouragement.” Ms Wiley went on to say, “In his message for the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly the Holy Father assures us that the Lord is aware of all that we have been through during this time of pandemic. He reminds us that he has been close to all those who felt isolated and alone and that even at the darkest moments, the Lord continues to send angels to console our loneliness and to remind us that He is with us always. Pope Francis tells us that “these angels sent to console us will at times have the face of our grandchildren, while at other times, the face of family members, lifelong friends or those we have come to know during these trying times, when we have learned how important hugs and visits are for each of us. And the Holy Father has given us some homework in his message by asking the elderly to try to read a page of the Gospel every day, to pray with the psalms, to read the prophets because the Scriptures will also help us to understand what the Lord is asking of our lives today – “For at every hour of the day, and in every season of life, he continues to send laborer's into his vineyard.” Ms Wiley concluded, “These words of our Holy Father are offered not just to console and comfort us at this time, they are also offered as encouragement to us to keep going with the important role that we have as Grandpar-ents which the Pope describes as a vocation "to preserve our roots, to pass on the faith to the young, and to care for the little ones irrespective of their age, if they are alone or have a family, if they work or not or if they are grandparents or not.

The Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into tempta on, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

The Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of death. Amen.

Glory be to the Father

Glory Be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.

The Hail! Holy Queen

Hail! Holy Queen, Mother of mercy; our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us. And a er this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

Sacrament of Marriage The Pastoral Guidelines for Marriage Preparation are that a minimum of 7 months be set aside for personal preparation for marriage. Couples should refrain from setting a firm date until after they have called the office to discuss marriage plans. Weddings are celebrated Saturdays at 2pm.
