Saint Augustine of HippoOn August 28 we commemorated the feast day of Saint Augustine, Doctor of the Church, bishop, and early theologian. He is featured on one of our historic stained glass windows on the east side of the church. Born in presentday Algeria, Augustine was the son of a pagan father and Christian mother(Saint Monica). Augustine was a brilliant scholar in his youth who abandoned Christianity and led a dissolute life while living in Carthage, Rome, and Milan. At the age of 31, upon hearing a voice command him to open and read the Bible, he read from Paul's Letter to the Romans and converted to Christianity. Augustine was ordained to the priesthood in Hippo, Africa and eventually became a Bishop. He was consumed with converting the citizens of Hippo to Christianity and gained renown as a preacher. (Approximately 350 of his sermons survive today.) A profound philosopher, Augustine wrote several influential texts, including City of God and Confessions, which is considered a classic of autobiographical literature. Augustine is the patron saint of brewers, theologians, and printers.

Social and Racial Justice

Ministry Announcement

Today is the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation and the beginning of the Season of Creation, which contin-ues through the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi (October 4). On each of these five weeks, we will share sections of Pope Francis' 2015 encyclical Laudato Si' which sends a powerful message on our moral responsibility to care for creation. To learn more, visit https://catholicclimatemove-ment.global/laudatosi/.

1. “LAUDATO SI’, mi’ Signore” – “Praise be to you, my Lord”. In the words of this beautiful canticle, Saint Francis of Assisi reminds us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to em-brace us…”

224. “...it is no longer enough to speak only of the integrity of ecosystems. We have to dare to speak of the integrity of human life, of the need to promote and unify all the great values. Once we lose our hu-mility, and become enthralled with the possibility of limitless mastery over everything, we inevitably end up harming society and the environment.

Sign the Laudato Si’ pledge at livelaudatosi.org/ and an-swer Pope Francis’ urgent call to (1) pray for and with cre-ation, (2) live more simply, and (3) advocate to protect our common home.

spective on Christ and His Message. The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Bourgeault is a modern day mystic, Episcopal priest, writer, and internationally known retreat leader. We can't wait to dig into this book and would be delighted to welcome new members to our group. Please note that reading the book is not a requirement for participation.

SAINT CECILIA PARISH

The Greek philosopher Heraclitus said, "Nothing is constant but change itself." Here at Saint Cecilia we've embraced a lot of changes over the recent years. In the spirit of Pope Francis, we continue to evolve to a more collaborative and shared leadership model. As our parish has grown, we've introduced many new ministries—most of which have been conceived of and shaped by our parishioners—and we have also been blessed with the good fortune of being able to renovate our space to better accommodate the needs and desires of the parish. Now we're happy to share with you a number of exciting changes that will be taking place at Saint Cecilia.

Billy Biegler, SJ — Billy Biegler, a Jesuit scholastic who has been working with our RCIA community for the past two years, will be ordained to the transitional diaconate on Saturday, September 21. We couldn't be more pleased to report that Billy has been assigned to Saint Cecilia

for his diaconal year! This means that in addition to his work with the RCIA, Billy will be a member of the parish staff and will be preaching at some of our Sunday and weekday liturgies, as well as officiating at baptisms and weddings. Billy's first Sun-day of preaching will be on September 22 at the 11:15 Mass. When you see him, please give him a warm welcome!

Jeanne Bruno — As you know from last Sunday's bulletin, after seven years Jeanne will be completing her work here as Chaplain/Coordinator of Pastoral Outreach. We are aware that so many parishioners will want a chance to celebrate and show their gratitude to Jeanne, and we are planning an enhanced cof-fee hour to take place following the 11:15 liturgy on September 22. We are interviewing candidates for this parish position. We will miss Jeanne in the office but look forward to seeing her and her husband Joe at the Sunday liturgy.

Father John — In recognition of his leadership at Saint Ce-cilia and within the Greater Boston community, Father John has been named a Barr Foundation Fellow! As a member of the 2019 Class of Barr Fellows, Father John will participate in a two–year program and Saint Cecilia will receive the Founda-tion's support in strengthening our leadership and organiza-tional development. The two–year program includes a ten–day group learning journey next spring, a three–month sabbatical (June, July, and August of 2020), and ongoing facilitated lead-ership development workshops with their class of Fellows. What a great opportunity this is for Father John and what a gift for our parish community!

CHANGES AFOOT at Saint CeciliaLisa Pickering — Our Events and Facilities Manager Lisa Pickering is expanding her role to Director of Facilities and Events. This new position will include managing a more complex physical plant and with that facili-tating more parish, ministry, and community

events in our new spaces. Well done, Lisa!

Mary Kaye — Mary, our Pastoral Director of Operations, has had some life changes which involve a move to Montana for her family. Mary will continue in her leadership role on the staff, by splitting her time between working on-site in Boston and remotely from Montana. Mary has scheduled monthly re-turn trips to Boston to coincide with as many parish events as possible, including the monthly Parish and Finance Council meetings. We are grateful for Mary's continued commitment to the parish and staff!

Wedding Bells — John Glynn, our Director of College and Youth Ministry, is getting married at Saint Cecilia on Saturday, September 21! Congratulations to John and his fiancée Ali!

In related news, check out the bling on Colleen Melaugh's fin-ger! Colleen, our Director of Finance, is engaged to be mar-ried at Saint Cecilia in the fall of 2020. Congratulations to Col-leen and her fiancé Jeff!

Renovations — As you know from our weekly Bulletin Blast, the renovations are moving right along. As is the case with many projects of this scope, our timeline has been extended. While our classrooms are scheduled to be complete by mid-Oc-tober, the parish center and kitchen are

projected to be finished by mid-November. Stay tuned for more updates regarding the completion of the family center and community room.

Our Music Program — Daniel Lamoureux, our interim or-ganist, will complete his post on September 7. We are grateful to Daniel for sharing his many gifts and generous spirit with the parish while we searched for a permanent organist. We are pleased to share that Xuan He will begin as parish organist on September 14. Xuan has a DMA and an MM in Piano Perfor-mance from Northwestern University. An award-winning mu-sician and collaborator, Xuan has performed in venues across four continents. We look forward to welcoming him!

No matter how you approach change in your life, whether with trepidation or excitement, the parish staff invites you to join us as we embrace these changes with open minds and hearts. The future is great at Saint Cecilia!

Neighborhood news

After years of planning and much anticipation, plans to build a 33-story condominium tower on the small parcel of land that Saint Cecilia sold to Weiner Ventures back in 2007 have been canceled. Construction on the air-rights tower above the Mass Pike was scheduled to begin this past spring. This building would have changed the landscape of our neighborhood—impacting neighborhood parking and increasing retail opportunities and residential space. In a statement, Weiner said, "A combination of factors led us to this decision. While disappointing, we believe it is the correct one, and still paves the way for other future air rights projects to come to fruition."

Gift Cards needed

Occasionally we give gift cards to our neighbors in need. We need to replenish our supply of gift cards to Stop & Shop, Star Market, and CVS. If you would like to help out in this way, simply purchase a gift card in denominations

of $15- $25 and place it in the collection basket at Mass, give it to a member of the staff, or mail it to the Parish Office. We are very appreciative of your help as we attempt to offer some assistance to those who struggle.

VOLUNTEERING AT PINE STREET INN

Our parish has committed to volunteering at the Pine Street Men's Inn one night a month throughout 2019. Our next op-portunity will be Sunday, September 8 at 4:20 p.m. There are 10 slots open for parishioners to assist in feeding the guests at Pine Street Men's Inn. If you would like to join us on Harrison Avenue in the South End, please contact Mark Lippolt at [email protected] for more information! Some parking is available at the shelter. Please let us know if you can help with carpooling.

Describing the Amazon rainforest as "vital for our plan-et," Pope Francis joined the regions bishops in praying for action to extinguish the massive fires burning there.

"We are all worried about the vast fires that have devel-oped in the Amazon," the pope said Aug. 25 after leading the recitation of the Angelus prayer. "Let us pray that with the commitment of all they will be brought under control quickly. That forest lung is vital for our planet."

Leaders of the Latin American bishops' council also urged international action to save the Amazon rainforest from the fires.

"We urge the governments of the Amazonian countries, especially Brazil and Bolivia, the United Nations and the international community, to take serious measures to save the lungs of the world," said the statement Aug. 22 by the top officers of the council, known by its Spanish acro-nym, CELAM.

"What happens to the Amazon is not just a local issue, but is of global reach," the bishops said. "If the Amazon suffers, the world suffers."

The Amazon produces 20% of the world's oxygen, ac-cording to scientific measurements.

Brazil's space research institute, which is responsible for satellite monitoring of the Amazon, had reported that the number of wildfires, common in July and Au-gust, had reached a record number already in 2019, with 72,843 fires spotted.

The U.S. space agency, NASA, Aug. 21 and 22 released satellite imagery showing how smoke from the fires had created "a shroud that is clearly visible across much of the center of South America."

French President Emmanuel Macron called on world leaders to place the fires at the top of their agenda as they

meet in France for the Group of Seven summit starting Aug. 24. Attendees will include President Donald Trump, Macron and the leaders from Canada, Germany, Italy, Ja-pan and the United Kingdom.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has said publicly that he believes nongovernmental agencies -- including Cath-olic-backed agencies such as the Land Pastoral and the Indigenous Missionary Council -- are behind the illegal burnings because they have opposed his call for develop-ment of the rainforest. The organizations have strongly denied the allegations.

In its edition released Aug. 23, the front page of the Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, led with two articles about the Amazon fires. The first, titled "The Amazon must be protected," included general cover-age of the fires' scope and the alarm launched by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. A second article reported on the CELAM statement under the headline, "Save the forest to save the world."

In their statement, the bishops noted that the upcoming October Synod of Bishops for the Amazon will discuss the plight of the indigenous living in the area as well as the deforestation of the region. Sixty percent of the Am-azon rainforest is in Brazil.

"Hope for the proximity of the Amazon synod, con-vened by Pope Francis, is stained by the pain of this natural tragedy," the bishops said. "To the brethren in-digenous peoples who inhabit this beloved territory, we express all our closeness and join your voices with yours to shout to the world for solidarity and pay attention to end this devastation."

And while the deforestation of the world's largest tropi-cal forest and the violence against the indigenous popu-lation there have been a great concern to the Catholic Church, the upcoming synod also has caused apprehen-sion for the Bolsonaro government. In February, the Brazilian government was forced to deny that it was spying, through its intelligence agency, ABIN, on more "progressive" bishops and priests working on the synod.

The government's Institutional Security Cabinet, known as ISC, however, admitted it was worried that the meet-ing would be used to criticize the Bolsonaro administra-tion's stance on environment and indigenous rights.

"There are no general criticism of the Catholic Church. There is the functional concern of the Minister of State Chief of the Institutional Security Office for some points of the synod's Amazon agenda that will take place at the Vatican in October this year," said an ISC statement at

the time.

The CELAM bishops, quoting Pope Francis from his homily at his papal inauguration in March 2013, request-ed to "please ask all those who hold positions of respon-sibility in the economic, political and social fields, all men and women of goodwill: (to) be guardians of creation, of the design of God inscribed in nature, guardians of the other, of the environment; let's not let the signs of destruction and death follow the path of our world."

The declaration was signed by Archbishop Miguel Cabre-jos Vidarte, of Trujillo, Peru, CELAM president, as well as the officers of the organization.
