  • The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph December 27, 2020

[ 3 ] SAINT CLARE of ASSISI PARISH

Today we are celebrating the life of the Holy Family. Their commitment to the will of God

should be a source of inspiration for all Catholics families. The first source of our drive to

know the Father is found in the family. From that source, we develop as individuals in our

Catholic faith. This isn’t happenstance. It is God’s design. He made the family to be the

blueprint by which we learn to share love and where we develop our personal

relationship with Him. The family is the environment where we learn to be holy.

In our current time, families are experiencing great difficulty. Challenged by relativism,

secularism, and the profane, it is tempting to be subjective about an environment of

holiness in the home. How do we live our family life with the objective of faith-based

morality while finding ways to maneuver in a society riddled with tempting and sinful

behaviors? How do parents demonstrate determined actions of their faith? How do they live a life of holiness in

front of their children? What is a grace-filled home? How do they teach faith, hope, charity, chastity, prudence,

    and temperance?

Ah, we come to the heart of the matter- rule-governed behavior. The life of the Commandments in the home and

the task of following through. Weekly attendance at Mass and frequent Reconciliation, a demonstrated, habitual

prayer life, grace before meals, prayers before bed, loving, other-centered problem solving are all part of a grace-

filled Catholic home. This is a rejection of cultural Catholicism- cafeteria Catholicism, and heretical shoulder

    shrugging.

One of the great joys of my ministry is the privilege to perform baptisms. However, it can be a bitter-sweet

experience. While I am happy that a child, a beautiful new soul, is presented to Christ, I wonder, perhaps worry

about the child’s faith future. I pray for the new parents and offer my prayers that they will find the grace to be

committed to living a Catholic experience in their home. I pray that the Godparents will be supportive in that

endeavor. I pray that the child’s extended family will support his parents ’efforts.

While in theory, the Church should be our primary source of Catholic formation realistically the primary source is

the home. If a child experiences Christ’s presence at home, sees his parent’s marriage living a truly Catholic

marriage then the child will experience what real life faith is.

As Joseph likely and Mary certainly learned the commitment of a child to God is but the beginning of the infant’s

spiritual journey and a decision point for the parents to deepen their faith and their commitment to making it real

    and meaningful to their children.

Finally, parents invest a great deal in their kids so their lives may offer happiness, safety, love, and comfort.

Shouldn’t your investment in their spiritual growth and safety be of at least equal importance, not to mention

    your own?

    Decon Kevin

Forgiving Stewards The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

“…as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must forgive.” - colossians 3:13

Forgiving is one of the hardest things for people to do. We can’t give what we don’t have. Through Steward-ship, we need to receive God’s mercy and forgiveness

first before we can give it to others. Go to the sacrament of Reconciliation and receive God’s mercy and

forgiveness. Then, share the gift of forgiveness with someone – a family member, a friend or a co-worker.

Pick up the phone or text someone right now.
