STEWARDSHIP

The common definition of “stewardship” is the job of supervising or taking care of something, such as an organization or property. As Catholics, we tend to equate stewardship with financial support of the Church. When we hear the word we immediately think – another fundraiser. While supporting the financial needs of our Catholic community is an essential responsibility we have as Catholics, stewardship has a much broader meaning.

Creation Google “stewardship” and you will find a treasure trove of articles on Christian stewardship. The most simple and straightforward descriptive statement I found is this: God owns everything and the people of God are his management company. This means God created the world and entrusted it to us for safekeeping. As Pope Francis observes in his 2015 Encyclical Letter, Laudato Si (Praised Be), “[t]he earth was here before us and it has been given to us.” Our “management” responsibilities include protection and preservation of the environment, protection and enhancement of human life, and development of the world to serve God’s purposes. In his 1995 Encyclical Letter, Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life), Saint Pope John Paul II writes that “…man has specific responsibility towards the environment in which he lives, towards the creation which God has put at the service of his personal dignity, of his life, not only for the present but also for future generations.”

Mission Rick Warren’s book, A Purpose Driven Life, contains a section entitled “Life on Earth is a Temporary Assignment.” Warren cites biblical references describing life as “a mist, a fast runner, a breath and a wisp of smoke.” We have to remember that compared to eternity, our time here is very brief, and that everything we have been given here is on loan to us from God. In their Pastoral Letter on Stewardship (The Pastoral Letter) the U.S. Bishops summarize the situation and our stewardship mission: “As Christian stewards, we receive God's gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord.”

Discipleship Another aspect of stewardship is stewardship of the Church. As Catholics, we are called to discipleship, and stewardship is an expression of that discipleship. In that sense, we are all stewards of the Church. The Pastoral Letter puts it this way: “Individuals compose collectively the Body of Christ; therefore, disciples of Jesus Christ are stewards of the Church because stewardship is the personal responsibility of each one of the baptized.” We fulfill this responsibility in many ways, but a fair summary is through generous giving of our time, talent and treasure. The Pastoral Letter lists works, services, and ministries representing good stewardship, including, evangelization and witness to the Gospel, religious teaching and faith formation, collaboration in parish life and ministries; and work for social justice and peace.

Spirituality So, although supporting our Church financially is an essential and important aspect of our Catholic stewardship, it is only one part. As Bishop Carl Kemme of the Diocese of Wichita, Kansas put it, “Stewardship is not just about one or another aspect of our faith lives; it is about all of it. It is the overarching and foundational spirituality that shapes our entire existence.” Keith Eyrich SEAS Parishioner since 2006

SEAS PRAYER LINE

Do you need prayer or do you know of someone who needs prayer?

Our SEAS Prayer line is open to those in our parish, community and around the world to request for prayers for themselves or their loved ones.

It could be a prayer for upcoming surgery, employment, death, health or private intention. Our Prayer Partners commit to lifting up these intentions in prayer on a regular basis throughout the week as spiritual act of mercy.

We only need the first name of the individual/s and your intentions for them as God knows them intimately.

If you have an intention for which you would like us to pray or would like to know how you can be a Prayer Partner, you may email: [email protected]

“Prayer is the raising of one’s mind and heart to God or the requesting of

good things from God.” - St. John Damascene

AUGUST CELEBRATIONS! Eric AND Kaitlyn, Kristen, Johnathan Those who will have attended our 6:00 pm Mass Saturday, August 8, witnessed Eric Ton receive the Sacraments of Initiation--Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist--from Fr. Paul. It was a great moment for Eric, his fiancé Maryjane Vennat, his sponsor and future mother-in-law Dolly Vennat and all of us at St. Elizabeth Seton. AND, their marriage comes in September! Over the next two weeks, Fr. Paul will confirm three other "graduates" of our 2019-2020 RCIA Program--Kaitlyn Alvarez-Noli, Kristen Rico and Johnathan Shaw. And, the Lord and our St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish will celebrate with them! The RCIA Team consisting of Olga Dankoski, Jack Stewart, Rebecca Rankins and Shawn and Deacon Dave Tiemeier have met twice planning for the new year. We would welcome the opportunity to talk to you about this year's journey. Do you think you might like to join the Team? Serve as a sponsor? Do you know someone who has asked about the Catholic faith? Who might be thinking about joining SEAS' community of faith? Contact Deacon Dave: [email protected]
