T h i r d S u n d a y o f A d v e n t
There is one among you whom you do not
recognize. (John 1:26)
Today is Gaudete Sunday, or “Pink
Candle” Sunday, as some children call it.
It’s a day for rejoicing, to rejoice “without
ceasing” and “in all circumstances,” St.
Paul tells us (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18).
But why rejoice today? Because Jesus is near!
In today’s Gospel, some Jewish leaders are
interrogating John the Baptist about who he is. John
replies that he isn’t the Christ who would come to
save Israel. He is merely testifying to him,
proclaiming, “Make straight the way for the Lord”
(John 1:23). But then he turns the conversation
toward them. “There is one among you,” John says,
“whom you do not recognize” (1:26). He is the
Messiah. He is so holy that John wouldn’t even untie
his sandal. John hoped that they would rejoice that
the Messiah was near—but these men couldn’t see
him.
Jesus is near to us too, but sometimes we have
trouble recognizing him. In the flurry of our Christmas
preparations. In our grieving over a deceased loved
one. In our worries about the future. Our faith tells us
that Jesus is there, but it feels hard to sense his
presence in our midst. Even John had trouble: “I did
not know him,” he says later, but “now I have seen
and testified that he is the Son of God” (John 1:33,
34).
So who makes the difference? The Holy Spirit.
Jesus calls him the “Spirit of truth” who guides us to
all truth (John 16:13). The Spirit is the One who
makes Jesus present to us and helps us understand
who he is. John tried to show his questioners that
they were missing something important. Similarly, the
Spirit can open our eyes so that we don’t miss seeing
Jesus present in our lives.
Jesus isn’t hiding; he gave us the Spirit so that
everyone can know him. And that’s a reason to rejoice.
“Open my eyes, Holy Spirit.
Help me to recognize Jesus today.
Hay uno entre nosotros a quien no
reconoces. (Juan 1:26)
Hoy es domingo de Gaudete, o "Vela
rosa" domingo, como algunos niños lo
llaman. Es un día para regocijarse,
para regocijarse "sin cesar" y "en todas
las circunstancias", nos dice San Pablo
(1 Tesalonicenses 5:17-18). Pero, ¿por qué alegrarse
hoy? ¡Porque Jesús está cerca!
En el Evangelio de hoy, algunos líderes judíos están
interrogando a Juan el Bautista sobre quién es. Juan
responde que él no es el Cristo que vendría a salvar a
Israel. Se limita a testificarle, proclamando: "Haz el
camino para el Señor" (Juan 1:23). Pero luego él gira la
conversación hacia ellos. "Hay uno entre vosotros", dice
Juan, "a quien no reconoces" (1:26).
guía a toda verdad (Juan 16:13).
regocijarse.
"Abre mis ojos, Espíritu Santo.
Ayúdame a reconocer a Jesús hoy.”
O Almighty God, gracious provider and giver of life, we anxiously await the celebration of your birth. Like the people of
long ago, our ancestors in faith, we, too, are in need of light, in need of direction, in need of your Word, to show us the
way. Our busy lives and the consumerism that surrounds us make it difficult to recognize your kingdom and to hear
your voice. Help us Lord, to focus on you. Amen.
I had a dream, Joseph. I don’t understand it, not really, but I think it was about a birthday celebration for
our Son. I think that was what it was all about. The people had been preparing for it for about six weeks.
They had decorated the house and bought new clothes. They’d gone shopping many times and bought
elaborate gifts. It was peculiar, though, because the presents weren’t for our Son. They wrapped them in
beautiful paper and tied them with lovely bows and stacked them under a tree. Yes, a tree, Joseph, right
in their house. They’d decorated the tree also. The branches were full of glowing balls and sparkling
ornaments. There was a figure on the top of the tree. It looked like an angel might look. Oh, it was
beautiful. Everyone was laughing and happy. They were all excited about the gifts. They gave the gifts to
each other, Joseph, not to our Son. I don’t think they even knew Him. They never mentioned His name.
Doesn’t it seem odd for people to go to all that trouble to celebrate someone’s birthday if they don’t know
Him. I had the strangest feeling that if our Son had gone to this celebration He would have been
intruding. Everything was so beautiful, Joseph, and everyone so gay, but it made me want to cry. How
sad for Jesus—not to be wanted at His own birthday party. I’m glad it was only a dream. How terrible,
Joseph, if it had been real. Author Unknown

Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, December 12th
Our Lady of Guadalupe is unlike any other apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. First, it is the
only apparition where Our Lady left a miraculous image of herself unmade by human
hands. Second, it is the only universally venerated Madonna and Child image where Our Lady
appears pregnant instead of holding the Infant Jesus.
The historical story surrounding this Marian apparition is truly fascinating. The Blessed Virgin
Mary appeared to St. Juan Diego in the 16th century in present day Mexico City, Mexico. Juan
Diego saw an apparition of the Blessed Virgin on the Hill of Tepeyac on December 9, 1531, which
happened to be the feast day of the Immaculate Conception in that time. Our Lady requested that a church be
built on that site, which Juan Diego dutifully relayed to the bishop.
After a request by the bishop to prove her identity, Our Lady asked Juan Diego to gather roses that were
growing on the hill (which were neither native to the area nor in season) and take them to the bishop. Juan
Diego obeyed and placed the roses in his tilma (or cloak) to carry back to the bishop as evidence of Our Lady's
appearance.
Upon opening the tilma to reveal the miraculous roses to the bishop, there was
something even more miraculous present in the tilma—a striking image of the
Blessed Virgin Mary.
In the image Our Lady wears the traditional garments of an Aztec princess. A
black sash around her waist was a cultural tradition among the Aztec women that
indicated pregnancy. All the elements of the image point to Our Lady as being
above the gods the Aztecs worshiped, while at the same time showing that she
herself was submissive to the true Creator God while being pregnant with the
Divine God-man that grew in her womb.
Later, a church was built at Our Lady's request on the Hill of Tepeyac to mark the apparition site, and today
it is the most visited Catholic pilgrimage shrine in the world. Venerated in this cathedral is the original tilma of
St. Juan Diego, which still displays the miraculous Our Lady of Guadalupe image.
Special Collection today for Retired Clergy and Religious
Aging religious need your help. Thousands of senior sisters, brothers, and religious order
priests spent years working in Catholic schools, hospitals, and agencies — often for little
pay. Their sacrifices leave their religious communities without adequate savings for retire-
ment and eldercare. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious collection helps provide
prescription medications, nursing care, and more. Please give to those who have given a
lifetime.
Done a
aquellos que dieron toda una vida.
