Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary

Time August 26, 2018

As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.

— Joshua 24:15b

Learn Your “Love Language” at Date Night! Date Night starts a new video series, the “5 Love Languages” by Gary Chapman, Saturday, Sept 15, 7-9 pm in the Parish Center. If you joined us before when we showed the one-hour Love Languages summary video, you’ll have a chance this year to explore each “love language” in more depth to better enrich your relationship.

Please bring an appetizer, dessert or beverage to share. Contact Chris and Ann Aguilar at [email protected] or (408) 356-7642 for more information.

Date Night is a ministry for Engaged and Married Couples offering monthly opportunities for Fellowship, Formation and Enrichment.

HOUSEHOLDS IN GOD’S SERVICE In the ancient world, “household” was a wide-reaching concept. When Joshua today speaks of his household serving the Lord, he meant not just those people who lived inside his walls or those related to him by blood or marriage; he meant slaves or servants and their families, and anyone indebted to him in any way. Even his livestock and other possessions would be consecrated to service of God. In our world, we value allowing individuals their freedom to choose how they live and wouldn’t think of offering our pets to the service of God. But, as we discern our vocation as disciples baptized into Christ, we can come to realize how far-ranging the “households” of our lives still are: how we act toward our spouses, chil-dren, roommates or anyone we live with; our behavior with neighbors; or in public as we encounter many “strangers” every day in stores or traffic who suddenly are “next door” to us. How can we use our time, our resources, or gifts for selfless reasons rather than personal gain? No matter what life our witness to the Good News calls us to, we all have a “household” that must be consecrated to service of the Lord our God. — Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The LORD, our God, protected us along our entire journey (Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b). Psalm — Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34). Second Reading — Christ nourishes and cherishes the church because we are members of his body (Ephesians 5:21-32 [5:2a, 25-32]). Gospel — We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God (John 6:60-69). Come See What Alpha’s All About. The Alpha Course is starting up again on September 5, 2018. There will be with an introductory dinner. It will be held on Wednesday evenings this year in the Parish Center. There are already people starting to sign up, so please do not hesi-tate to contact Alicia Morales at [email protected] or (408) 857-0523. Alpha is a 10-week course that examines the basic teachings of Christianity in a relaxed, low-key way, and it is open to all at any levels of faith. St. Frances Cabrini Parish was awarded a grant from the Catholic Community Founda-tion of Santa Clara County! This grant of $2,000 will help us with the next session of Alpha, a worldwide program which introduces non-believers to Jesus Christ and pro-vides Christians with a “Christianity 101” review of basics of the faith. For more information about the Catholic Community Foundation visit cfoscc.org.

St. Vincent de Paul Pantry Needs Our SVdP pantry helps feed the local com-munity by giving out grocery bags pre-packed with canned fruit, canned tuna and boxed cereal, canned soups, canned beans, jellies and jams. As always, sta-

ples such as oatmeal, peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, noodles, non-perishable items, etc. are needed—always! Please keep those in our local community in mind and consider picking up any one (or several) of the above listed items. Thank you to our secret shopper who brings us 10 of each basic item. The food brought in can easily go in one Tuesday’s distribution of our SVdP gro-cery bags. We are in need of the items listed above.

PRESENCE

“The Mystery of the Eucharist” by Augustine Institute, is our new class for the Fall. This is the first class in a 4 week series starting Monday, September 10th at 7 p.m. in the church. Registration forms are available on the In-formation Table in the vestibule of the church.

Interested in becoming Catholic? The Saint Frances Cabrini Parish RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) group welcomes all those inquiring into the Catholic Christian faith as well as those adults who desire to complete their Sacraments of initiation. Regular sessions include an informal inquiry period and are held from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Parish Center living room beginning Tuesday, September 18th, 2018. We have a pleasant group that shares in the joy of ex-ploring the Christian faith. Please email [email protected] or find us on the parish website at www.sfcabrini.org

Anointing of the Sick When the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God's will, the person be physically healed of illness. But even if there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gift of peace and courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age. If you or someone you know is in need of a priest for an Anoint-ing of the Sick, please call Sue at 408-879-1130. If it is an immediate emergency (in danger of death) please call 408-912-0440 to be connected with Fr. Gabriel or Fr. Michael.
