SAINT KATERI TEKAKWITHA (1656-1680) JULY 14Though the New York State Thruway runs close by the North American Martyrs’ Shrine, traffic’s roar never pierces the peace enveloping Auriesville—Ossernon to Native Americans—in the lovely Mohawk Valley, where Kateri Tekakwitha was born barely ten years after the martyrdom of Isaac Jogues and

his Jesuit and lay companions. Daughter of a Christian Algonquin mother and non-Christian Mohawk chief, Kateri’s parents died in a smallpox epidemic widely blamed on the missionaries. Moreover, many Native Americans had experienced exploitation at the hands of “Christian” traders and trappers, further discrediting the faith Kateri embraced in baptism, then pledged to live even more intensely in vowed virginity. Misunderstanding led to harassment, prompting her move to a Christian village farther north along the Saint Lawrence River. Despite this, Kateri’s faith remained undaunted, her selfless charity undiminished. Both before and after her death at twenty-four, this young “Lily of the Mohawks” drew countless converts to Christ by the fragrance of her goodness. Through us, does “the aroma of Christ” (2 Corinthians 2:15), attract others to the beauty of his gospel? —PeterScagnelli,Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Dear St. Irenaeus parishioners,

Since time immemorial singing and chanting has been part of our worship of God. This is why Saint Augustine said, To sing is to pray twice.” Whether our hearts are burdened by sorrow or bursting with joy, we sing. The Bible tells us that even the angels sang as they announced the birth of our Lord Jesus to the simple shepherds.

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 health pandemic, we are being asked to refrain from singing at Mass for the time being in order to reduce the spread of this disease. This drastic measure is taken out of an abundance of caution to protect the health of those who come to Mass, since COVID-19 typically spreads through respiratory droplets from coughing, sneezing, talking and singing.

Thus, starting this weekend of July 11-12, we will discontinue the printing of the lyrics for the hymns of our Sunday Mass in the parish bulletin and we will not post them on our website either. The cantors, however, will continue to sing at our weekend Masses and all of us are invited to sing along SILENTLY in our hearts.

I thank you for your understanding, cooperation and patience as we deal with this horrible disease together.

Fr. Binh

Respect Life Ministry The Abortion Distortion—Exposing the medical lies propping up the abortion industry by Dr. Haywood Robinson. Dr. Haywood Robinson is a family practice physician who serves on the 40 Days for Life board of directors. Pro-life work has been a passion for this former abortion provider since his 1986 conversion.

Several months ago we published in the bulletin the number one lie from the abortion industry...Abortion is Safe. Here are number two and three. 2. Abortion is Health Care. Before performing any medical procedure, a physician must determine that it’s both safe and therapeutic. Neither of these requirements is fulfilled in abortion. Abortion isn’t safe—for either the mother or the child. And pregnancy isn’t a condition that needs to be treated because it’s not a disease. It’s a normal state of human development.

3. The Preborn Child Is Not A Person; IT’S “POTENTIAL LIFE.” I’ve yet to see scientific or medical literature define “potential life.” The fetus is either living or not. Life begins at conception when the sperm and ovum combine to make one cell. That one cell is human, and this is how we all began life. A definition of personhood that begins any other time other than conception is a misdirection play designed to keep the focus off the key issue: the destruction of human life. The medical field’s abandonment of the Hippocratic Oath has led to consequences horrific beyond measure. The lies that support the “abortion distortion” are weak flimsy, and delusional. Trying to make sense of them is enough to make your head spin. As an advocate for life and a servant of God, it is your responsibility to seek, know, and share the truth in love. We must never grow weary in the fight for life. Carry on my fellow soldiers.

Respect Life Ministry is happy to announce that in the last month we have received from two parishioners a donated high chair, diaper/wipes, baby clothes and two monetary donations enabling us to buy a new crib and a car seat for one of the mothers due in August. Thank you for your continuous generosity. If you would like to make a donation to help us continue supporting moms/babies in need, please call Anita Fuller at 714-615-0542 or Corrine Alcaino at 310-415-2525. If there is no answer when you call, please leave a message.

We Pray for

We are excited to announce Great Plates Delivered by Meals on Wheels Orange County, a new initiative in response to COVID-19 to provide our older residents with much-needed meals during the Governor’s stay-at-home order.

This new initiative is part of the State of California’s “Great Plates Delivered: Home Meals for Seniors,” a public-private partnership to support older adults as well as local restaurants and caterers needing assistance during the COVID-19 crisis. Meals on Wheels OC recently was selected by the Orange County Office on Aging to serve as a local administrator for the program.

The partnership teams Meals on Wheels OC with restaurants and caterers to prepare and deliver three nutritious meals a day to adults 65 and older and adults 60-64 who are at high-risk from COVID-19, to support staying home and healthy.

Launched on May 19, 2020, we are serving more than 230 eligible seniors in North and Central Orange County through Great Plates Delivered and are adding participants daily as provider capacity expands.

To enroll, a senior or helper must successfully complete an online application on our website—www.MealsonWheelsOC.org, using our Great Plates button. If a senior is unable to use a computer and does not have help, they may call our Great Plates enrollment number at (714) 263-1425. Due to high call volumes, we recommend completing the application directly on our website.

Our CEO Holly Hagler shared, “We are excited about this opportunity to partner with local restaurants and caterers who are eager to get back to work and help us provide nutritious meals to even more seniors than the record-breaking numbers we are serving due to COVID-19.”

Older adults who are not eligible for Great Plates Delivered may still qualify for our COVID-19 Grab & Go meals at participating senior centers or our traditional home-delivered Meals on Wheels. Information is available on our website.

Local restaurants, caterers and other meal providers interested in partnering with Meals on Wheels OC may review program requirements and submit an application.

ST. IRENAEUS STUDENTS WILL RETURN TO THE CLASSROOMS

5 DAYS A WEEK IN THE FALL

Our school year will be begin on Monday, August 24, 2020 andSt. Irenaeus does plan to have

students return to the classrooms Monday-Friday. Class sizes will be kept to no more than 20 in a room

for more social distancing. Our faculty and staff will wear face

masks. We will also stagger breaks and lunch periods, have regularly scheduled hand washings, and more extensive cleaning of our

classrooms.

We are still accepting applications but space is limited in some grades. Call our Registrar, Mrs. Lily LoBasso,

for more information at714-827-4500 ext. 111 or visit

our website at: www.stischoolcypress.org.

ST. I ALUMNUS NICHOLAS MARTINEZ Nicholas played football for St. Irenaeus and he continued to play

when he entered Servite High School. He played football all four years as an offensive lineman and also competed in two years of track and

field. During his junior and senior year Nicholas wore number 78, an honored jersey at Servite. Number 78 was worn by Kevin Stephenson,

’73, a true leader respected by those he played with because of his love for Servite and his fellow brothers. For two years in a row,

Nicholas was chosen to wear this honored number by the coaching staff. Number 78 is given to the player that best exemplifies

Stephenson’s leadership and character, and the coaches felt Nicholas was more than deserving of the honor. Nicholas was on the

first team all CIF, first team All League, and All County. He received a Division 1 full scholarship to play football for the University of Kansas

where he will major in International Business in the fall.

8TH GRADE QUOTES Our 8th grade students were asked at the end of the year, “What is something you learned during your years at St. Irenaeus?” Here are some of their answers.

Julia P. - “The greatest lesson I learned was to step back and see the bigger picture instead of the small mistakes. I am thankful to all of my teachers at St. I for leading me down the path of academic excellence.”

Noah R. - “The greatest lesson learned at St. I is that I can do well in anything; all I have to do is study, listen, and focus. My favorite words to live by are: You will face many defeats in life, but never let yourself be defeated - Maya Angelou.”

Jessica M. - “The greatest lesson at St. I is to be a good steward and disciple of Jesus Christ. I am thankful to my teachers for a great education and for helping me live my life as a child of God.”

Connor F. - “My greatest lesson learned at St. I is to never say you can’t do it. I will never forget the years that I spent at St. Irenaeus because it will be my foundation for life. My favorite quote is, ‘If you aren't going all the way, why go at all?’ -Joe Namath”
