Stewardship Notes Next week’s collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) needs your help. CCHD was founded to break the cycle of poverty in the United States by funding organizations that help individuals help themselves. With the tradition of improving education, housing situations, and community economic development, CCHD continues to make a positive impact in communities nationwide. Your contribution will defend human dignity and reach out to those living on the margins. Thank you for your support.

From Our Pastor By your perseverance you will secure your lives… your redemption is at hand. (Luke 25:19; 28) The readings today are not among the most cheerful in Scripture. Malachi speaks of the Lord coming in fire, Christ warns of persecution, and even Paul’s words are those of admonishment: do not act as your brother’s keeper but tend rather to your own duty to God. And while that may seem counter-intuitive (for aren’t we supposed to teach others the way to Christ?), Paul really echoes the evangelist James: “Be doers of the words and not hearers only.” It will be your actions which speak loudest, serving as a model of Christian witness.
Still, amidst these writings the Psalmist reminds us of the joy found in following God. Literally all the earth mirrors His glory. “Let the sea and what fills it resound, the world and those who dwell in it; let the rivers clap their hands, the mountains shout with them for joy.” It is this passage which comes to mind when I think of the upcoming week celebrating Saint James Catholic School. The hallways of our wonderful School teem with the Spirit. The unabashed faith and openness of our kindergartners grows and matures into the thoughtful and generous witness of our older students. It imbues every aspect of student life, from academics to athletics, to the arts, and of course, to the service of others. While there are many excellent educational choices for our children in this area, it is this notion of faith in all, for all, and above all which differentiates us. The recognition that all good things come from God (again, James!) and are directed towards Him is the hallmark of all parochial education. Striving for academic excellence is integral to this endeavor. Seeking to bring out the best in each student is to honor God’s creation. Read more on pages 6 and 7 about how our twice-named National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence “ignites the potential in every student.” Discover Saint James School this week. Come to one of our Open Houses and discover all this and so much more for yourself… and your child.
I am grateful to our wonderful Sisters, faculty, staff, parents and you – our parishioners – for supporting our School for 110 years in prayer and sacrifice. We are all partners in the evangelizing mission of Catholic education. Growing as Christians doesn’t stop with graduation. In the coming liturgical year, we are launching a pastoral initiative called “Light Your Heart with the Word.” Beginning with the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, we will include a reflection question from Opening the Word in our bulletin and on our website, as well as links to the reflections on FORMED.org and additional scripture resources. Our office of evangelization will offer classes to learn more about the Mass with Fr. Bashista celebrating “teaching Masses.” More details are available on page 8 and on our website.
Our goal is to help everyone recognize and participate in St. James as a parish community that is “an environment for hearing God’s word, for growth in the Christian life, for dialogue, proclamation, charitable outreach, worship and proclamation” (Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel 28).
I look forward to celebrating our school this week and our upcoming 125th anniversary as we continue to plant the seeds of faith for the future.
~Fr. Posey

Proclaim the Word! Join our Lector Ministry... You may have noticed that our roster of readers has grown pretty thin. People have moved away, and some travel frequently or have multiple commitments. Please consider volunteering to proclaim the Scriptures at your favorite Mass or as a substitute. Training and support is available. The assignments will accommodate your personal schedule. This ministry is a wonderful gift and grace for the whole people of God and for each reader. You can do interviews at your convenience. If you’d like some extra support, join us in the House of Ministries on November 14 at 4:00pm or 7:30pm.
The upcoming holidays are a great opportunity to talk to family members. We hope you’ll participate. Questions? Contact Lisa Helene Bacalski at 703-532-8815 or [email protected]. Sample questions:

We invite you to journey with us as we explore Scripture and the Mass. Prepare yourself for the Mass by reading and praying on the weekly readings either individually or with their families and neighbors, to understand the purpose and structure of the Mass and to embrace the Eucharist as the “source and summit” of our Christian life together. Throughout the liturgical year we will offer classes, reflections, retreats, teaching Masses, and online resources to help you “enkindle the fire of God’s love.” We encourage you to participate however you can, and to invite your friends to join us on this journey.

Wreaths Across America St. James’ American Heritage Girls Troop VA0681 will be
participating in a service project with Wreaths Across America which involves selling wreaths to be placed on the graves of our
country’s veterans this Christmas season at both Arlington National Cemetery and at the US Soldiers’ & Airmen’s Home National Cemetery
Wreaths Across America is a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring and thanking our
veterans for their service and sacrifice by continuing and expanding the annual wreath-laying event started at Arlington National Cemetery in1992 and now performed at cemeteries across the country. American Heritage Girls shares in the message and mission of Wreaths Across America: “From one generation to another, we will NEVER FORGET that the Freedoms we enjoy came at such a great cost.” If you would like to show your appreciation and support for our American Veterans in this way, please consider sponsoring one or more wreaths that will be delivered to US Soldiers & Airmen’s Cemetery in Washington, DC. The St. James American Heritage Girls Troop will be placing these wreaths on grave markers at the wreath-laying ceremony there on December 17th, 2016.
To donate a wreath, please get a form from the vestibules or website, add a check made payable to Wreaths Across America, and return to our Troop in one of three ways: (1) Drop off at one of the American Heritage Girls tables outside of church after Mass the weekend of November 12-13 (2) Place in the church offertory basket; or (3) Drop off at the Rectory. Orders can also be placed online at the following link: www.goo.gl/LfhTL7
Support the Knights of Columbus Thanksgiving Dinner — Donate a Turkey or Volunteer! More information is available outside church after Mass or by emailing [email protected]. Over the last 30 years, the St.James community has been tremendously generous and we look forward to your support again this year.
