SAINT JAMES CATHOLIC SCHOOL PARISH LIFE
He answered, “I heard you in the garden; but I was afraid, because I was naked, so I hid.” God asked: Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I have forbidden you to eat? The man replied, “The woman whom you put here with me-she gave me fruit from the tree, so I ate it.” Genesis 3:10-12 The passage, Gn 2:25, together with the meaning of original nakedness inherent in it, takes its place in the contextual setting of the Yahwist narrative. After some verses the author writes: “Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew they were naked, and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons.” (Gn 3:7) The adverb “then” indicates a new moment and a new situation following the breaking of the first covenant. This situation follows the failure of the test connected with the tree of knowledge of good and evil. At the same time that test constituted the first test of “obedience,” that is, listening to the Word in all its truth and accepting love, according to the fullness of the demands of creative Will. The new moment or new situation also implies a new content and a new quality of experience of the body, so that it can no longer be said: “They were naked, but were not ashamed.” Here, shame is an experience that is not only original, but a “boundary” one. (i.e., protecting against having personal values compromised or violated) The difference of formulations that divide Genesis 2:25 from Genesis 3:7 is significant-in the first case, “They knew that they were naked, but they were not ashamed;” in the second case, “They knew that they were naked.” Does that mean that, to begin with, “They did not know that they were naked,” or that they did not see the nakedness of each other’s body? The significant change testified by the biblical text about the experience of shame (of which Genesis speaks again, especially in Genesis 3:10-12), takes place at a deeper level than the pure and simple use of the sense of sight. “So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there,
apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on
them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.“ Mark 6:5-6
Stewardship is a faith response. Christ could not perform good works without faith. Neither can we. If faith
without works is dead, so are works without faith.

In a healthy marriage both spouses strive
to be good and strong. But, sometimes it
is through recognizing our weakness that
we can grow stronger. What a mystery!
"...for when I am weak,
then I am strong." (2 Cor. 12:10)
Can you identify a weakness in yourself
that has punctured your pride and made
you a better spouse?
If you know of a homebound parishioner that would enjoy receiving the weekly bulletin,
please let the office know their name, address, and current phone number. You can let us
know by calling or e-mailing the parish office at 270-765-6268

The Lord will come when we least expect him. Is he
knocking now, asking us to serve as a priest or
religious? (Luke 12:49-53)
Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Amos 7:12-15
Second Reading: Ephesians 1:3-14 or 1:3-10
Gospel: Mark 6:7-13
Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Ezekiel 2:2-5
Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10
Gospel: Mark 6:1-6a
At first glance our readings seem rather pessimistic.
Ezekiel is entrusted with a difficult commission,
Paul has a thorn in his side and Jesus is rejected by
his own. But in another sense, each reading is a re-
minder that when our eyes are fixed on the Lord,
not even the threat of danger can deter us.
