Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10
Second Reading: Hebrews 12:1-4
Gospel: Luke 12:49-53
Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Wisdom 18:6-9
Second Reading: Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19 or 11: 1-2, 8-12
Gospel: Luke 12:32-48 or 12:35-40
Faithfully living the life of a disciple requires great trust in a God who can seem distant or even absent,
depending on the circumstances of our lives. Sometimes we create the distance by giving priority to
the distractions of the world, and sometimes tragic events beyond our control can cause us to doubt God’s
presence. Maintaining steadfast faith requires dedicated care and attention to our relationship with
God. Jesus’ example and the power of the Holy Spirit provide us the strength and guidance we need to
remain ready to meet him when he comes again.
“Jesus said to his disciples: ‘…. Sell your
belongings and give alms. ....an inexhaustible
treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor
moth destroy. For where your treasure is,
there also your heart will be.’”
Luke 12:33-34
A good way to examine “where our heart is,” is to
spend time reviewing our appointment calendar
and our checkbook. Where am I spending my time
and money? A thoughtful examination will
reveal where our heart really is.

SAINT JAMES CATHOLIC CHURCH
ELIZABETHTOWN, KY SUNDAY, AUGUST 11
PARISH LIFE
The following, written by our Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, was published by the international publication Give Us This Day, Daily Prayer
For Today’s Catholic entry for the Feast of St. Thomas the Apostle, July 3rd. Reflection Faith Seeking Understanding “Whatever,” when said with a shrug of the shoulders for added effect, is a modern symbol of indifference or apathy. Many see indifference, and not unbelief, as the polar opposite of belief. Thank God that St. Thomas, absent on that first Easter evening when our Risen Savior appeared to the others, didn’t shrug his shoulder and proclaim, “Whatever”! Instead, like a modern scientist, his unbelief sought proof within his own senses. It was humbling for Thomas when Jesus appeared a second time and invited him to touch his very wounds. This led to perhaps the most famous act of belief: “my Lord and my God.” And Thomas’s same spirit of inquiry and zeal would carry him east to proclaim the Gospel, to India and some say even to Japan. While our culture might see faith and reason as diametrically opposed to each other, in St. Thomas we see that lively faith seeks understanding—fides quaerens intellectum, as Saint Anselm memorably said in the eleventh century. Later medieval theologians would go on to affirm that, when properly understood, questioning and a sense of wonder bring faith and science together. On the threshold of Independence Day, we pray for a freedom not to utter whatever” to life’s mysteries but to have the capacity to be inquiring and to be amazed—and so make friends of science and faith. Doubting Thomas is a good patron. Archbishop Joseph Kurtz The Most Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, DD, is Archbishop of Louisville.

The parishioners of St. James are very generous is so many ways with their time,
talent and treasures. Occasionally we are asked about various ways to make
charitable contributions. You have a myriad of charitable vehicles and methods to
support the causes you care about. Some are simple and straightforward, like
outright gifting or donating appreciated securities, while others are more complex
but also potentially more impactful, like charitable remainder trusts, and donor advised
funds. To help you with your near and long term giving plans, we will run a series of articles
summarizing some common charitable vehicles over the next few months.
