SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“Jesus made his home in Capernaum so that what had been spoken through the Prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled.” Matthew 4.12-23
John (Giovanni) Bosco
Feast Day: January 31
Canonized: April 1, 1934
Beatified: June 2, 1929
Venerated: July 24, 1907
John (Giovanni) Bosco was a priest who tried to teach poor children how to work and how to love God. John was born in 1815 in Becchi, Italy. His father died when he was only two. His mother loved him and taught him to love God and others. He worked as a shepherd in his early years but loved learning so much that he was sent to study at a seminary. In 1841 he was ordained a priest. John was not only a priest but “father” to thousands of children. He started a school for poor boys, many of whom he met when he visited their parents in prison as part of his priestly ministry. These boys lived in the prisons, too, or on the streets. Father Bosco wanted more for them. He started a school where they could eat and sleep safely. He taught them about music. They learned how to make shoes, clothes and books. These skills would be useful in finding jobs. John also taught the boys about God’s love for them. They grew up living good lives. Later, John began a similar school for poor girls. Because so many boys and girls needed love and care, John required other adults to help him. He started The Salesians, a group of priests dedicated to helping the boys and The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, a group of nuns who helped the girls. Even his mother, Margaret came to help with his work. (The Salesian name came from his devotion to St. Francis de Sales.) In 1875, he sent his first group of missionaries to the Americas. John died in 1888, at the age of 73. Many women and men were caring for “his children”, and there were 250 Salesian houses. People soon called for him to be made a saint. He was canonized in 1934.
QUESTIONS ABOUT THE MASS: How do they choose what to pray for in the General Intercessions? In the early Christian Mass, prayers similar to our Prayers of the Faithful were offered, as they had been in the Jewish synagogue service. These prayers were restored when the ritual of the Mass was revised. The exact wording of our General Intercessions (Prayers of the Faithful) is not specified – it is up to us to provide it. These prayers, however, usually cover the needs of the Church, society, the local parish, those in want, the sick and those who have died. Special intentions can also be added to these prayers.

JOKE OF THE WEEK: A pastor told his congregation, “Next week I plan to preach about the sin of lying. To help you understand my sermon, I want you all to read Mark 17.” The following Sunday, as he prepared to deliver his sermon, the minister asked for a show of hands. He wanted to know how many had read Mark 17. Every hand went up. The minister smiled and said, “Mark has only 16 chapters. I will now proceed with my sermon on the sin of lying.”
