Now & Next

This Sunday, Sept. 13, is the feast of our patron saint, St. John Chrysostom (that’s KRIS-uh-stum), Archbishop of Constantinople, theologian, reformer and widely considered one of the greatest preachers of all time. (Chrysostom means “golden-mouthed.”) An ascetic as a young monk, Chrysostom’s later and fre-quent criticisms of flamboyant living, especially at court; his reforms within the church; and his calls for the rich to share their wealth with the poor would make him beloved by the people … but not by the church and imperial hierarchies. Eventually exiled, then recalled amid protests by the people, then ordered exiled further, Chrysostom died on his way to the second exile. Take a minute to Google our fascinating patron when your time permits.

As previously announced, CYO has suspended all inter-parish competitive sports for the fall. St. John's CYO leaders are considering offering some parish activities, but will defer plan-ning until later this month. The Archdiocese has informed all parish CYO organizations that CYO's current goal is "to provide our Catholic schools the best opportunity to reopen safely for the Fall." No parish activities will be allowed at this time, the Archdiocese says, to allow

schools to "focus on getting kids back in the classrooms and prioritizing the adjustment to a new normal for our students." We’ll update you as more information becomes available.

Happy Feast Day, St. John Chrysostom!

CYO Weighs Fall Activities

After a successful summer session trial with more than 100 students, our new Parish Religious Edu-cation Program curriculum is ready to kick off for the fall. More than 200 students will participate in the new curriculum, a model known as Family Catechesis, which blends parent instruction at home, online resources, and monthly in-person classes (COVID permitting). The program features both print and digital resources, including assignments and assessments; Zoom meetings with catechists; and online meetings and sacramental rehearsals. Options are also available for parents who do not want their children to attend in person at all. PREP is also looking forward to celebrating last spring’s deferred First Holy Communion this month and next. Last spring’s Confirmation Mass has been re-scheduled for Dec. 14 with Archbishop Pérez. Please keep all of these families and their catechists in your prayers.

Refreshed PREP Gears Up for Fall

Oct. 19 is the last day to register before the general election Nov. 3. Visit www.VOTESPA.com to check your registration, register, change your address, or apply for a mail-in ballot. Check out the step-by-step instruction video for registering online. (It’s easy!) Pennsylvanians may register online, by mail, at the county voter registration office, or at several government agencies. Questions? Call (877) VOTESPA (868-3772).

Season of Creation, Week 2: Relationship & Recycling

The Season of Creation is a time to renew our relationship with God’s creation. “This year, amid crises that have shaken our world, we’re awakened to the urgent need to heal our relationships with creation and each other,” Pope Francis said in his 2020 Season of Creation Message. “During the season this year, we enter a time of resto-ration and hope, a jubilee for our Earth, that requires radically new ways of living

with creation.” This week, our Care for Creation Team is focusing on recycling — what it really means, how to do it right, why it’s important, and just where all that stuff goes. For videos, prayers and guides, please visit sjcparish.org/peace-and-justice.

Back to School … Here & There

In bedrooms, dining rooms and actual classrooms across the community, our students have returned to school. For

teachers and administrators, summer vacation was lost to intensive planning; for families, to uncertainty and disrup-

tion. At Mother of Providence Regional Catholic School, students returned to the building this week for the first time

since March. Around the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District, remote learning for all students began Aug. 31,

with multiple instructional options ahead as the year unfolds. Please pray for all school families, teachers and staff.
