. The Word of the Lord

First Reading: II Kings 4:42-44 A man brought twenty loaves of bread to Elisha the prophet, who told his servant to distribute it to the people. The servant asked how he could offer twenty loaves to one hundred people. Elisha replied that God had said, “They shall eat and there shall be some left over.” After all the people had eaten, there was bread left over as God had said.

Second Reading: Ephesians 4:1-6 Paul implores the Ephesians to live a life worthy of their calling by preserving unity among all of Christ’s followers. He reminds them that there is one body, one Spirit, and one God who works through all people.

Gospel: John 6:1-15 Jesus fed a crowd of five thousand people with five loaves of bread and a couple of dried fish. After everyone present had enough to eat, twelve baskets of leftover bread were collected. Jesus then realized the people would want to make him king so he fled alone.

Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?”

St. Pope John Paul II when visiting Scotland in 1982 in speaking about the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fish said: “The boy gave all he had and Jesus miraculously fed 5000 people…It is exactly the same with your lives…Place your lives in the hands of Jesus. He will accept and bless you, and he will make use of your lives in a way that exceeds your greatest expectation.” This same challenge is for us today. If we offer, even what may seem only a little that we have in service of Jesus Christ, of our time, talent and treasure, there is no limit to what He can do with and through us.

The miracle in today’s gospel prefigures Jesus’s institution of the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper. The actions of taking, blessing, giving thanks, breaking and giving are the same as in the celebration of the Eucharist at Mass.

The word companion derives from two Latin words, com which means “with” and panis, meaning “bread”. Thus, a companion literally means “bread with us”. Jesus is our companion in the Eucharist. We receive Jesus’s divine assistance, in His Eucharistic Presence – food for the journey. Jesus is our companion throughout our hours and days, always with us. Jesus is the source of our strength. Just as the apostles did in today’s Gospel, we place our trust in Him. God bless us all always! Deacon Mike
