~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Continued Support for St. John’s Church
The parish is grateful for the generosity of its parishioners through weekly collections. Please consider signing up with Faith Direct, our electronic giving program. It is a
safe and secure program already used by many of our families. At this critical time, it is important to continue to support our parish. Please go to www.sjtb.org for a
direct link to our parish on Faith Direct. There are options for weekly contributions, offertory catch up, and one time
donations. Donations can still be mailed to the Church, dropped in the mail slot in the side door of the office or
dropped in the collection box if you attend Sunday Mass. Thank you and God bless you for your support of St. John’s!
This week, we celebrate the feast of St Bonaventure, Bishop and Doctor of the Church (July 15). From one of his weekly catecheses Pope Benedict XVI teaches us that Bonaventure “is an eminent theologian who deserves to be set beside another great thinker, a contemporary of his, St Thomas Aquinas. Both scrutinized the mysteries of Revelation, making the most of the resources of human reason, in the fruitful dialogue between faith and reason that characterized the Christian Middle Ag-es, making it a time of great intellectual vigor, as well as of faith and ecclesial renewal, which is often not sufficiently emphasized. Other similarities link them: Both Bonaventure, a Franciscan, and Thomas, a Dominican, belonged to the Mendicant Orders which, with their spiritual freshness…renewed the whole Church in the 13th century and attracted many followers. They both served the Church with diligence, passion and love, to the point that they were invited to take part in the Ecu-menical Council of Lyons in 1274, the very same year in which they died; Thomas while he was on
his way to Lyons, Bonaventure while the Council was taking place. Even the statues of the two Saints in St Peter’s Square are parallel. They stand right at the beginning of the colonnade, starting from the façade of the Vatican Basilica; one is on the left wing and the other on the right. Despite all these aspects, in these two great Saints we can discern two different ap-proaches to philosophical and theological research which show the originality and depth of the thinking of each.” Want to learn more? Visit www.vatican.va and search “Bonaventure” in the search bar to read Benedict’s three reflections from March 2010 on the life and theology of St Bonaventure of Bagnoregio. CCD 2020-2021. We are planning to resume an online/in-class hybrid model for catechetical instruction in the fall. At pre-sent, the plan is to offer in-class instruction only for the sacramental preparation classes, namely, second grade and eighth grade; other grades will be offered homeschooling options supplemented by in-house online content developed by the par-ish. As Virginia continues through Phase Three and the local school systems adjust their educational planning, we will ad-just accordingly. Finalized plans will be rolled out in upcoming weeks. ST. FAUSTINA OF DIVINE MERCY SAID: "O my Jesus, despite the deep night that is all around me and the dark clouds which hide the horizon, I know that the sun never goes out. O Lord, though I cannot comprehend You and do not under-stand Your ways, I nonetheless trust in Your mercy. If it is Your will, Lord, that I live always in such darkness, may You be blessed. I ask You only one thing, Jesus: do not allow me to offend You in any way. O my Jesus, You alone know the longings and the suffer-ings of my heart. I am glad I can suffer for You, however little. When I feel that the suffering is more than I can bear, I take refuge in the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, and I speak to Him with profound silence."(St. Faustina Diary, 73) Used with permission of the Marian Fathers of the Im-maculate Conception of the B.V.M."
