Back to School...Again? There was a time in my life as a boy ..and maybe yours... when the words "back to school" induced dread and anxiety. For this reason I could not be-lieve my ears when parents told me that their little children could not wait to go back to school at Saint John's. I wondered : how can this be? What I heard was a great tribute to our teachers. A good teacher inspires children to want to learn. They also create an environment where children feel safe and loved. What a lovely thing to know about a school.

As our children go off to school this year let's to ask God to bless them with the joy of learning!

Recently I was blessed to spend a week and a half in Ireland to celebrate the wedding of a parishioner from Saint John's, Colleen Chiu, in the town of Kinsale. While in Ireland I took a tour of a well known attraction, the cliffs of Moher, pictured above. Huge numbers of tourists go there to see spectacular views.

As I walked about the scenic path I came across a young boy who appeared bored to death. The crowds around him were gawking with amaze-ment but here is this little tyke who couldn't wait to leave. Children , of course, can be that way: engaged and excited one minute, and then totally disinterested the next. Then again, so can we!

I asked myself: when did my attitude toward going to school change? It changed from anxiety and bore-dom to excitement when I became interested in what I was learning, when what I was being taught had relevance to my life, and when something stimulated my curiosity and desire to know.

So, as children go back to the school, I suggest we post-school adults take a minute to examine the state of our mental activity. What do I need to know to live my life more thoughtfully? What would I want to know more about? We may be too old for school, but we are never too old to learn. In my later years I have discovered that people who care for their minds are more likely to enjoy life and stay alert longer. Remember that warning that was popular once: the mind is a terrible thing to waste?

At Saint John and Saint Thomas we are always look-ing for ways to help you grow in the knowledge of your faith and spirituality, virtue and the wisdom to live a good and holy life. If you have something you would like to learn as a Catholic, please ask us, or share something you have found helpful for your growth. My summer reading has been a fascinating biography of our Holy Father: Pope Francis: Unty-ing the Knots, by Paul Vallely. The author admires this great leader of our church and does an admirable job of revealing the many twists and turns of his life as a Jesuit and a bishop, and the complexity of his background and his personality, not to mention the challenges he is facing leading our church during these very trying times.

TWO IMPORTANT SPECIAL NOTICES: VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION MASSES. We invite all who serve our parishes to come to either the Saturday 4 PM Mass at Saint Thomas on Sep-tember 7, or the 10 AM Mass at Saint John's on September 8. We have a gift and a blessing for you to express our appreciation for your service. We will not be hosting a dinner this year but we hope you will join us for some light refreshments after each of these Masses. Keep in mind that next Sun-day is the International Festival in downtown Pea-body so Main Street will be closed to traffic through most of the day. OUR ANNUAL BLUE MASS for all active and retired police officers, firefighters and emergency personnel is at 10 AM at Saint John's on Septem-ber 15. A reception follows at Peabody City Hall. Let's thank them for their service!

Regreso a la Escuela... Otra Vez?

durante a maior parte do dia..

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time September 1, 2019

Dear Parishioners and friends of St. John’s & St. Thomas

September is around the corner and cooler temperatures will soon be upon us. In prepara-tion for the fall and winter months, I ask you at this time for specific donations which will help those living out-doors under these conditions: for Men and Women - win-ter coats, winter boots, hooded sweatshirts, sweaters, fleece jackets, backpacks, sleeping bags, blankets. Up-date: Thanks to your abundant generosity, many of our brothers and sister in Christ have showered in our reno-vated bathroom facility, and most recently, laundering of clothing has begun. Offering both of these services helps to dignify each person, by adding great value to their life as their struggles continue.

Continued needs: New only men’s boxer briefs or

boxer shorts size LARGE, deodorant, rosaries, medals, or religious pins. All donations can be dropped off at St. John’s Parish Center, Monday to Friday, from 9:30-3:30pm OR in a bin marked “for outreach program” in the upper church foyer after weekend masses. For St. Thomas parishioners, donations may be left at the Spir-itual Center during the week. Thank you for your gener-osity and support! If you need further information, please call Outreach Coordinator Pat Adam at (978) 335-2080

Across Greater Boston, we are blessed with priests who enliven and enrich not only our parishes but our surrounding communi-ties. Through their ministry, they work tirelessly to bring Christ’s love to all those who need it. Truly, the strength and vibrancy of our parishes and broader communities depend on the health and well-being of our priests. Please support our priests by making a gift to the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust at clergytrust.org or by giving generously to the upcoming special collection on September 14/15. This dedicated second collection is a primary source of funding to care for our priests. Your generosity is very much appreciated.

Funds from this special collection are managed by the Clergy

Health and Retirement Trust – an independently managed trust with a majority lay board of trustees. The funds are used for the

sole benefit of active and senior priests in good standing.

PARENTS: Come to our 10 AM Mass! These are our Family Masses for all

kinds of families.

Relax! God put the wiggle in children; do not feel you have to suppress it in God’s house.

All are welcome! Sit towards the front where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what is going on in the

sanctuary.

Quietly explain the parts of the Mass and the actions of the priest, altar servers, cantor, lector, etc. Children’s missals are available at the back of the church to help your little ones understand the order of the Mass.

Sing the hymns, pray and voice your responds loudly and clearly. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you. Need to step out for a moment with your child during Mass? Please do so freely as needed. We have a children's corner with a rocker and kiddie's books. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me!”

To all Members of Our Parishes: Remember: the way we welcome children in church directly affects the way they respond. Let them know that they can feel at home in God’s house. The presence of children is a gift to the Church. They are a reminder that our parish is growing. Your church is their church as well. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to them and to their parents.

Are you interested in becoming a Catholic? Or Completing Your Sacraments?

Are you interested in joining the Catholic Church? Do you have a family member or friend who is curious

about the Catholic Faith? Are you already Baptized, but haven’t

received First Holy Communion or Confirmation?

Throughout the year, we offer sessions in which we dis-cuss the basic practices and teachings of the Church. We also read scripture together and consider difficult issues of the Faith. At the Easter Vigil, participants may step forward to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, and/or

Eucharist and Confirmation, and are welcomed into the Church.

We hope you will consider joining us on your faith jour-ney. Even if you feel you are not ready, or have ques-

tions or reservations about the Catholic Church, we wel-come you. There is no pressure or “recruiting,” and we

promote open and honest discussion. To learn more about these sessions

(RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), please contact Fr. John MacInnis at 978-531-0002.

Healthier Priests. Stronger Communities.

Funds from this special collection are managed by the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust – an independently managed trust with a majority lay board of trustees. The funds are used for the sole benefit of active and senior priests in good standing.

The strength and vibrancy of our communities depend largely on the welfare of our priests who tirelessly serve others from all walks of life.

Powerful examples of strength in community are visible across 144 cities and towns of the Archdiocese of Boston. The roots of these communities can be traced back to the work of our priests.

Pine Street Inn: A Boston priest was one of the original founders of Pine Street Inn, which provides shelter and emergency services for nearly 2,000 homeless men and women in the Boston area every day.

Cor Unum: Started by a Lawrence pastor, Cor Unum (“One Heart”) food pantry serves more than 250,000 meals annually to poverty-stricken families in Lawrence.

Addiction Support for Families: A Boston priest’s expertise in addiction and recovery has been instrumental for organizations helping families and individuals in the grips of addiction.

Rostro de Cristo: Efforts to help the poor on the margins of Ecuador’s largest city is hard work, except for those who have been inspired by a Boston priest who started Rostro de Cristo, an organization based in Boston that lives the Gospel and serves the poor.

It’s simple: healthier priests mean stronger communities. Please support clergytrust.org
