JesusperformsmanyilluminatingsignsinJohn’snarrativethatindicatethewayoftruth,butsignsareonlybeneficialforthosewhoknowthey’re lost or who seek escape from the confusion of endless night. In preferring darkness, the spiritually blindensuretherewillbemoreofit.

    WhenJesusturnstowardBethanyafteraperiodofdelay,henotesthateachdayhas12hours.Inourlopsidedculture,thisseemsabitshort:Aren’tthere16or18hoursofday,andfewerofnight?Jesusreferencesthebiblicaldaydeterminedby creation, thebalancedpairingofopposites.Whatever canbe saidofmodern life,balance isn’tpartofthedescription.

    This acknowledgment of creation’s balanced design recalls an unexpected passage from Ecclesiastes abouteverythinghavingitsseason.Therewillbetimeenoughforeverything,saysthesage:killingandhealing,weepingandlaughing, war and peace. I’ve always found this passage disturbing. Why can’t the world have more of healing,laughing,andpeace; lessofthedarkrealities?Wemustadmiteverymortalbirthpreparesthewayforyetanotherdeath.OnemaywonderiftheShakersdon’thaveapointaboutforegoingthewholeprocreationcycle.

    Ecclesiastesdoesn’tviewkillingandhealingasmoralequivalents,orpassfriendlyjudgmentonbothsidesofeachpairing.Thesagesimplyrecognizeswhat is,withoutaskingwhatshouldbe. Jesussayssomethingsimilaraboutthe12-hourday.Lightanddarknesshavetheirhours.It’snotaperfectworldbutitistheworldwelivein.John’sgospelisespecially sensitive to the idea that darkness “has its hour.”We can’t afford to be naïve about this. The death ofLazarusisafact,thewayyourdeathandminewillonedaybeafact.

    ButwhatGoddoeswiththis ismost interesting!ThecrucifixionanddeathandburialofJesusareallhorrifyingfacts,yetoverturnedintheradiantdawnofEaster.Inthecontestbetweendarknessandlight,there’snocontest.ThegloryofGodisthevictor. –AliceCamille

    SOMETHINGSAREWORTHITWhat’s the point of the Passion? It’s a question many Christians are too polite to ask. We worship beneath

    crosses that are fearful and strangeandmakeusuncomfortable.Weproclaima gospel that takes a terrible routethroughhorrorandagonybeforearrivingatitsgraciousvictory.It’sastoryweprefertokeepfromsmallchildrenaswe fillour religiousprogramswith storiesofhealing,miracles,andgooddeeds.Someofus replace the traditionalcrucifixonthewallwithaRisenLordorgreatHighPriestthatrevealsthemajestymoreappropriatetotheendofthestorythantoitsdarkesthour.

    Simplyput:Whydidn’tGod save theworldanotherway?Whycouldn’t theAlmightywipe the slateofhistorycleanofsinwithoutthesufferingandthebloodshed?IfyouorIwereGod,we’dseekanothermeansofexecutingarescue from sin and death. If the choice were ours, we’d find a way to do the greatest good without personallyundergoingthegreatestanguish.

    We’dseekanalternativetothecrossbecausethat’swhatwealreadydo.We’veturnedthesacred lawof loveintoacreedofniceness.Lovetakesrisks;weplayitsafe.Lovesuffersforthecauseofjusticeandtruth.Weembraceeverycompromisethatkeepsusfromconflict,evenifitmeansadoptinglittlewhiteliesallalongtheway.

    JesusChristdidn’tdieon thecross so that theworldmightbeanicerplace.Prophetsdidn’t sufferabuseanddisdain,saintsdidn’tmarchtotheirmartyrdom,sothat therestofusmightbepleasantandagreeable.WasJesuspleasant and agreeable? He spoke to his mother and his friends rather harshly. He was even less polite to hisopponents. Jesus wasn’t above saying insulting things to his dinner hosts. The love he demanded of us wasn’t amatterofeasycharity.Itwasabonfireofvanities!Jesussaidhecametosetsuchafireburning,andhecouldn’twaittoseetheworldablazewithit.

    Divineloveisn’tastrollinthepark,arminarm,inarestoredEden.Divineloveisamountain!Ithastobescaled,at tremendous effort, with perseverance and courage and focus. It has to bemounted, like the cross, every limbcommitted,nailedintoplace.ThepointofthePassionisthatloveisn’teasy.Itrequiressacrifice.Itcostseverythingwehave.Andit’sworthit.ThroughthePassionofthecross,welearnthatGodsolovestheworld,solovesyouandmerightnow,thatnocompromiseispossible,andanypriceisworthpaying. –AliceCamille
