Dear Parishioners, Happy New Year! Remember what I told you last week: The First Sunday of Advent begins the new liturgical year. We also should remember that the liturgical day goes from sundown to sundown. So, our new year began with First Vespers of the First Sunday of Advent, both in the Ordinary and in the Extraordinary Form. And, of course, the Ordinary Form, following the time prescriptions of the liturgical day, had the First Sunday of Advent Mass yesterday at 4:15PM. Yes, Christmas will be here before we know it. And if we don’t know it, TV, radio and the internet will never tire of telling us and trying to sell us something. I’m sick of it already and we still have four weeks to go! Well, at least I’m hearing the word ‘Christmas’ a bit more often this year. Of course, we get “holidayed” to death, but perhaps things are getting a bit better. Oh, please, whom am I kidding? I happened to be in Sam’s Club the other day. I was quite amazed to see that they had “Advent Calendars” for sale. Advent Calendars are typically for children and they have a particular “window feature.” Behind each “window” (each window corresponding to one day in Advent) is a piece of chocolate. A child would open one window per day and find his piece of chocolate. I first saw such things when I lived in Germany. They had a quite classy look. Well, no such luck on what I saw in Sam’s. Oh, yes, it had the words ‘Advent Calendar,’ but, was there ONE picture of Our Lord or the manger or the Star of Bethlehem? Nope. But Santa Claus was all over the place. That’s one of the unfortunate things about Advent. Society, the media and retail treat it like Christmas. The closer we get to Christmas, even in the classical music world, we hear Christmas music constantly, from Gregorian Chant to Bach to Pärt. The lead up grows more and more intense every day up to Christmas Day only to have the Christmas “phenomenon” fall flat on its face on December 26. Come that day, not a Christmas carol within earshot. What a shame. Christmas Day is the beginning of the Christmas Season, not the end of it. When we “do” Christmas all during Advent, we shorten Christmas by quite a bit. Christmas extends from December 25 to February 2. I hope we here at St. Joseph and Ss. Peter and Paul get our Christmas act together, know what it means and how to celebrate it. God bless you, my children and my friends. A fruitful Advent to all of you. Dear Parishioners,

Happy New Year! Remember what I told you last week:

The First Sunday of Advent begins the new liturgical

year. We also should remember that the liturgical day

goes from sundown to sundown. So, our new year

began with First Vespers of the First Sunday of Advent,

both in the Ordinary and in the Extraordinary Form.

And, of course, the Ordinary Form, following the time prescriptions of the

liturgical day, had the First Sunday of Advent Mass yesterday at 4:15PM.

Yes, Christmas will be here before we know it. And if we don’t know it, TV,

radio and the internet will never tire of telling us and trying to sell us

something. I’m sick of it already and we still have four weeks to go! Well, at

least I’m hearing the word ‘Christmas’ a bit more often this year. Of course,

we get “holidayed” to death, but perhaps things are getting a bit better. Oh,

please, whom am I kidding?

I happened to be in Sam’s Club the other day. I was quite amazed to see that

they had “Advent Calendars” for sale. Advent Calendars are typically for

children and they have a particular “window feature.” Behind each “window”

(each window corresponding to one day in Advent) is a piece of chocolate. A

child would open one window per day and find his piece of chocolate. I first

saw such things when I lived in Germany. They had a quite classy look.

Well, no such luck on what I saw in Sam’s. Oh, yes, it had the words

‘Advent Calendar,’ but, was there ONE picture of Our Lord or the manger or

the Star of Bethlehem? Nope. But Santa Claus was all over the place.

That’s one of the unfortunate things about Advent. Society, the media and

retail treat it like Christmas. The closer we get to Christmas, even in the

classical music world, we hear Christmas music constantly, from Gregorian

Chant to Bach to Pärt. The lead up grows more and more intense every day

up to Christmas Day only to have the Christmas “phenomenon” fall flat on

its face on December 26. Come that day, not a Christmas carol within

earshot. What a shame. Christmas Day is the beginning of the Christmas

Season, not the end of it. When we “do” Christmas all during Advent, we

shorten Christmas by quite a bit. Christmas extends from December 25 to

February 2. I hope we here at St. Joseph and Ss. Peter and Paul get our

Christmas act together, know what it means and how to celebrate it. God

bless you, my children and my friends. A fruitful Advent to all of you.
