SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

JOIN US FOR AN “AFTERNOON OF CHRISTMAS JOY!

—JANUARY 7

Our annual Christmas concert, "An Afternoon of Christmas Joy" will be held Sunday, January 7 at 3:00 pm in the church. This year it will feature Saint Joseph Church's extremely talented Adult and Children's Choirs, cantors and instrumentalists in a wide variety of holiday music selections including classical pieces by Handel and Bach, popular songs by Stevie Wonder, Irving Berlin and Harry Belafonte, and an original piece by our own Director of Music, Monroe Quinn. We hope you will be able to come. There is NO admission charge and the entire family is welcome.

The great English novelist and poet Thomas Hardy (1840-1928), who lost his faith in the confusing fallout from

Darwin’s findings and adopted what one critic justifiably called a “gloomy determinist philosophy,” nevertheless wrote a poem many believers have come to treasure: “The Oxen.” It is based on a legend of his region’s West Country, which has it that each Christmas the farm animals in their stalls do homage to the newborn Christ. Although it conveys the thoughts of someone who can’t bring himself to believe anymore, it also expresses a yearning that somehow wishes it were possible to do so. After recalling the legend, Hardy writes:

Yet I feel If some one said on Christmas Eve Come, let us see the oxen kneel … I should go with him in the gloom Hoping it might be so.

As we prepare to rejoice once more at Christmas in the great reality that the Son of God has entered our world to share our human life and raise it to divine status, all the staff of Saint Joseph Church wish you nothing but the finest experience of this season’s happiness, including its central reality. (continued above)

St. Paulinus of Nola (c. 353-431), once a landowner of large estates and a governor of a province of the

Roman Empire, gave up his worldly prominence to become a bishop in Italy. Writing of Christmas’s great truth of the incarnation of Jesus, he remarked that

God has clothed himself in us, entering into eternal links of exchange between mankind and God.

This pivotal event of human history, marking God’s permanent entry into our

lives, is the source of the chief meaning and delight we can know. St. Ambrose long ago saluted the transcendent importance of Christmas for us when he addressed Jesus in these beautiful words:

Now thy cradle shines bright and night itself gives forth unwonted light. May no night ever interrupt it, and may it shine with perpetual faith.

I hope this will be your lasting Christmas joy.

NEW YEAR’S DAY MASSES SOLEMNITY OF MARY THE MOTHER OF GOD

Monday, January 1, 2018 10:30 am; 12 noon

(Except when indicated otherwise, Masses are celebrated in the Upper Church.)

As we say goodbye to Fr. Andrew (who moves on to become pastor of The Church of the Korean Martyrs in Saddle Brook) and thank him for his 5 ½ years of faithful service to our parish), we are pleased to welcome Fr. Joseph Montes

de Oca to Saint Joseph Church. Fr. Joseph, who was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark in 1996, will begin his ministry here at Saint Joseph on January 1. Fr. Joseph comes to us from Our Lady of Visitation in Paramus where he has been serving for the last eight years (2009-2017). Previously he was parochial vicar at St. Aloysius (Jersey City), Our Lady of Divine Providence (Miami, FL), and St. Patrick (Elizabeth). In addition to those assignments, Fr. Joseph served as a missionary priest in Estonia for two years (1997-1999). Fr. Joseph, who is a US citizen, was born in Jalapa, Veracruz, Mexico and raised in Spain, France, Italy and the USA. (His father was in the coffee export business and traveled.) The oldest of four children (two sisters and a brother), Fr. Joseph speaks four languages— English, Italian, Spanish and French. He holds three Masters degrees (in Systematic Theology and Jewish-Christian Studies from Seton Hall University and in Philosophy from the New School of Social Research). Throughout his priesthood, Fr. Joseph has served in many capacities: in pastoral care of the sick, on Social Justice committees, as Liturgy coordinator, chaplain to married couples, and coordinator of a spirituality group and a theology reading group, He has been a Director of Religious Education, a catechist and a high school, religion teacher, as well as the founder of a middle school youth group and an RCIA coordinator—just some of his many responsibilities. (continued above)

Fr. Joseph is an avid reader who lists Tolstoy, Chekhov, Faulkner, Poe and Jorge Luis Borges as some of his favorite authors. His taste in music is very eclectic—from Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennet to U2, Guns & Roses and Aerosmith (rock) and Tim McGraw and Carrie Underwood (country). A big fan of NFL football, college basketball and action movies, Fr. Joseph also has a self-proclaimed weakness for Italian pasta! When asked who his heroes are, Fr. Joseph gave a very moving response. “My only heroes, “ he said, “are all the parishioners in every parish I have served. Why? Because of the many lessons I have learned from their courageous determination to face the concrete challenges of daily life; their unconditional love for their families (especially the numberless sacrifices they make for their children); and their real, non-presumptuous, no-nonsense and very down to earth relationship with God.” Fr. Joseph is eager to begin his ministry at Saint Joseph and is looking forward to meeting everyone. He has a special message for Saint Joseph’s parishioners: “At times, I expect to walk a little bit ahead of you, sometimes to walk behind you; sometimes I will stop and wait for you, many times I will run to catch up with you; sometimes I might even carry you; but I will never consider myself to be above you, and always hope to share the same journey with you.” Welcome, Fr. Joseph!

WELCOME, FR. JOSEPH!

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!” LUKE 1:28

Faith is a gift from God. Take time in silence and thank Him for all the gifts He has given you. Try to set aside any anger or resentment you have and really open your heart to receive the gift of God’s mercy and forgiveness. We can’t give what we don’t have. We need to receive God’s mercy and forgiveness before we can give it to others.
