THE NIGHTINGALES SWEET MUSIC DELIGHTS HUNDREDS

IN SAINT JOSEPH CONCERT Saint Joseph Parish was blessed with some truly beautiful music on September 30 when the soprano duo "The Nightingales" joined our own Fr. Roy Regaspi to seranade hundreds of delighted listeners at Paramus Catholic H.S. The proceeds from this very well attended concert will go toward the commission of a beautiful new crucifix for our church sanctuary.

TWENTY NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ OCTOBER 21, 2018

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

If you enjoy reading, here are some recent books you may find interesting: In the field of religion:

William J. Slattery’s Heroism and Genius: How Catholic Priests Helped Build—and Can Help Rebuild—Western Civilization (Ignatius Press, 201

Mike Aquilina and Grace Aquilina’s A History of the Church in 100 Objects (Ave Maria, 2017) uses items ranging from stained glass windows to union membership pins to tell the story of the Catholic Church in a greatly entertaining way.

Mike Aquilina’s The Healing Imperative: The Early Church and the Invention of Medicine as We Know It (Emmaus Road Publishing, 2017) examines a legacy we can be proud of.

ABCs of the Christian Life (Ave Maria Press, 2017) is an anthology of G. K. Chesterton’s writings. Several such books have been produced, all with their notions of GKC’s best works—and there is always room for another.

Jonathan Keates’s Messiah: The Composition and Afterlife of Handel’s Masterpiece (Basic, 2017) offers many delights, including how Handel, in Dublin for a preview of a performance of his great work, noticed concert-master Matthew Dubourg losing his place during a violin movement. “A contemporary account said that ‘He wandered about in different keys a great while, and seemed indeed a little bewildered and uncertain of his original.’ When he finally found his way back, the composer himself called out to general delight, ‘You are welcome home, Mr. Dubourg.’”

Martin Goodman’s A History of Judaism (Princeton University Press, 2018) has been praised as the best work of reference on this subject for today’s generation.

Current Issues and Non-Fiction Amy Goldstein’s Janesville: An American Story

(Simon & Schuster, 2017) relates how the loss of U.S. jobs overseas affected a mid-size city in Wisconsin. After Parker Pen was bought by a conglomerate, production was then moved to Mexico. One chapter focuses on Linda Korban, Parker’s longest-serving employee, who didn’t even get the traditional retirement cake when she was laid off.

David Thomson’s Warner Bros (Yale, 2017) relates the flamboyant history of Hollywood’s smartest and toughest studio. When its workers went on strike, goons with guns were brought in, leading some

(continued above)

workers to replace Warner Brothers’ motto (“Combining good picture-making with good citizenship”) with “Combining good picture-making with good marksmanship.”

Jean M. Twenge’s iGen: Why Today’s Super-Connected Kids Are Growing Up Less Rebellious, More Tolerant, Less Happy—and Completely Unprepared for Adulthood (Atria, 2017) explores issues such as false notions of tolerance, the desire for “safety,” excessive time spent on-line and skyrocketing rates of depression and suicide.

Ryan Holiday’s Perennial Seller (Portfolio, 2017) urges businesses to build a fan base of customers—a long, humdrum and laborious task—instead of just relying on TV commercials and social media.

Melissa del Bosque’s Bloodlines (ECCO, 2017) tells how two FBI agents took down a Mexican drug cartel, which had, among other things, taken over a quarter-horse racing stable.

Kevin Cook’s Electric October (Holt, 2017) describes the 1947 World Series between the Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers, emphasizing the contributions of the teams’ less known players. Yankee pitcher Bill Bevens lost a no-hitter with one out to go when Cookie Lavagetto got a hit off the right field wall. Another contributor was George (“Snuffy”) Stirnweiss (1945 American League batting champ when baseball’s talent was depleted by WW II), one of 47 people who died when a commuter train plunged into Newark Bay in 1958.

Eli J. Finkel’s The All-or-Nothing Marriage (Dutton, 2017) dispenses advice: Married couples have to work hard, not be too ready to regard thoughtless actions as character flaws, not expect all their likes to be the same, make time for each other, and not think that destiny rules their relationship.

Iddo Landau’s Finding Meaning in an Imperfect World (Oxford, 2017) warns that pursuing perfection can lead to despair. The ordinary life, well lived, is admirable: Do your job, care for your family, help others, and appreciate beauty.

R. Marie Griffith’s Moral Combat: How Sex Divided American Christians and Fractured American Politics (Basic, 2017) sounds important warnings, although it does not cover considerations such as the effects of single parenthood on children, pornography, and the decline of marriages.

Kathryn Mannix’s With the End in Mind: Dying, Death and Wisdom in an Age of Denial (Little, Brown, 2018) advocates for more emphasis on palliative care. She

A MESSAGE FROM POPE FRANCIS —OCTOBER 21

“The prayers and the material aid generously given and distributed through the Pontifical Mission Societies enable the Holy See to ensure that those

who are helped in their personal needs can in turn bear witness to the Gospel in the circumstances of their daily lives.” (Meeting of Pope Francis with Young People, Maipu Shrine, 17 January 2018) The collection for World Mission Sunday provides for the building up of over 1,000 local churches in Asia, Africa, the Pacific Islands and parts of Latin America and Europe.

HOW TO DONATE: Please make your donation to World Mission Sunday by using your parish envelope, donating through our online giving program, or putting your check (made out to “Saint Joseph Church” and memo’d “World Mission”) in the collection basket or by mailing it to 105 Harrison Street, New Milford, NJ 07646. Thank you!

(“From the Pastor’s Desk—continued from p. 3) also says that those facing the prospect of death can become “beacons of compassion, living in the

moment, looking backwards with gratitude and forgiveness, and focused on the simple things that really matter.”

Charles C. Mann’s The Wizard and the Prophet (Knopf,2018) examines the issue of the alleged over-population crisis, which has often been predicted but never seems to arrive, by focusing on two scholars who take opposing views on the possibility.

Patricia Vigderman’s The Real Life of the Parthenon (Mad Creek, 2018) covers her travels through the Mediterranean region. In Naples, she loses her purse to a thief, causing her to regret, above all, the loss of her notebook: “The abduction of my notebook—my little catalogue of deferred reflection—into the Italian underworld was a forceful demonstration that the tricks invented to hold onto the moments as they pass are doomed to fail.”

Roma Agrawal’s Built (Bloomsbury, 2018) is about notable buildings and construction projects from ancient times on. She notes that in 300 A.D. Rome had 45,000 apartment buildings and just 2,000 private houses.

Gregg Easterbrook’s It’s Better Than It Looks: Reasons for Optimism in an Age of Fear (PublicAffairs, 2018) offers a bright overview of today.

(continued above)

Zack O’Malley Greenburg’s 3 Kings: Diddy, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, and Hip-Hop’s Multi-billion-Dollar Rise (Little,

Brown, 2018) profiles these entertainment personal-ities, whose net worth is estimated at $825M, $770M and $900M respectively. “Dr. Dre,” who has greatly toned down his public persona, has admitted that “making money is more important to me than talking about killing police.”

Simon Winchester’s The Perfectionists: How Precision Engineers Created the Modern World (Harper, 2018) is a salute to the various fields of engineering by a writer who knows how to tell good stories.

Children’s Books Francesca Patel’s The Song from Somewhere Else

(Bloomsbury, 2017) is about a bullied girl who is rescued by an unkempt boy, who takes her home, where she sees paintings and hears beautiful music. Matt Tavares’s Red and Lulu (Candlewick, 2017) Is

about two lovebirds: cardinals who are separated when their tree home is disrupted when it is chosen to be the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree—but there is a happy ending.

Tony Ross’s I Want Snow! (Andersen Press, 2017) tells of how a willful young princess repeatedly

insists on getting snow—and when it finally comes, as reviewer Meghan Cox Gurdon writes, “a certain someone gets … cold.”

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45) If you held a mirror up to your life, would it reflect God’s love and mercy? If you are struggling with this, try changing your attitude from “I want more” to “thank you God for everything you have given me, I have enough to share.” This change in perspective will bring you joy through service to others.
