SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT ~ DECEMBER 8, 2019
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
“TAKE A TAG” SHARE THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS
Our Giving Trees, an Advent tradition at Saint Joseph Parish, are located in the main entrance of the Church and at the
Harrison Street entrance. Please take a tag from the Giving Tree, purchase the requested gift and then place the wrapped gift, with tag attached, under the tree the next time you come to Mass. The tag you take from the tree is very important. It tells our office staff and the agencies we are helping for whom the gift is meant. It is extremely important that the tag you took from the Giving Tree be attached securely to the wrapped gift so that it will reach the correct person on Christmas. All Giving Tree Gifts need to be returned NO LATER than Sunday, December 15. You may place them under the tree in church or drop them off at the Rectory/Parish Office.
SOLEMNITY OF THE
IMMACULATE CONCEPTION —TRANSFERRED TO DECEMBER 9
The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (December 8) is usually a Holy Day of Obligation, but it is not in 2019. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) explains, “Since December 8, 2019 is the Second Sunday of Advent, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is transferred to Monday, December 9, 2019. The obligation to attend Mass, however, does not transfer.” Saint Joseph Church will have Mass at 7:00 am, 8:30 am and 10:30 am on Monday, December 9 in honor of the Solemnity. We hope you will be able to join us.
The worship of God is supremely important to the Church and so to us. Certain of its events are so important that they claim priority over even very treasured days that
happen to fall on the same dates in a particular year. Because the Sundays of Advent rate so high, even our national patronal feast of the Immaculate Conception steps aside when December 8 occurs on an Advent Sunday. This year it gets transferred to Monday and, because of the switch, is not regarded as a holy day of obligation for 2019. But its teaching always deserves appreciative attention. The teaching about Mary’s Immaculate Conception, formally defined by Pope Pius IX on December 8, 1854, states that Mary, from her conception, was singularly favored by God’s grace to be free from Original Sin in view of the redeeming merits of Jesus, the son she would bring into the world. This privilege from God affected her whole person, body and soul, from the very beginning of her life. Mary was the only human person to be conceived without sin. (Jesus was a divine person with two natures, the nature of God and the nature of man.) Mary was redeemed by her son, as all of us have to be, but in a unique way that is sometimes called “preservative redemption,” an insight associated with the medieval theologian John Duns Scotus (c. 1265-1308), which asserts that Mary was favored in a special way in view of the unique task God asked her to assume. Because she was to be the mother of his Son, a role the Eastern Church termed the Theotokos, or “God-bearer,” Mary was given a fitting honor because of her relationship to Christ, whose glory she already unknowingly participated in even before the Archangel Gabriel’s disclosure of the mission God wanted her to undertake. Her sinlessness meant that there would be nothing about her life to hamper her love of God and neighbor. And so, the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception is closely linked to our beliefs about the Trinity, the Incarnation and the Redemption. As the earliest images of Mary from the time after the forming of the New Testament attest, Mary is the New Eve, helping her Son undo the harmful effects of sin.
(continued above)
More than a hundred years after the proclamation of the doctrine, one of the most important documents of Vatican Council II, Lumen Gentium (“Light of the Nations”), reasserted its teaching by declaring that Mary was “enriched from the first instant of her conception with the splendor of an entirely unique holiness.” We have great need of embracing this truth today, not only for the recognition of its goodness but for its encouragement to us to see k our Blessed Mother’s help in adhering to God’s ways. It is help we are sure to receive if we are open to it.
