Over the years, I have seen many of us in the Church struggle to get more and more people to participate and “volunteer” to do what needs to be done to keep our churches going. Whether it be helping out once a year at the annual whatever or being a part of the weekly and monthly life in the Church, we always seem to find ourselves, sooner or later, lamenting the fact that we do not have enough people “volunteering” to do all of the tasks that need to be done and fill all the roles that need to be filled. Well, I propose to you that one of the difficulties that I see in all of this is our focus. Are we really look- ing for “volunteers” to do a project or are we looking for stewards to fulfill a ministry? As each new year roles around, we find ourselves looking for parishioners to teach in our Sunday School, sing in our choir, serve in the altar, work with the youth, join the organizations, usher, chant, cook, clean, plan for the future, pay the bills, make the necessary decisions, and so on, ad infinitum. Then, we look at them and call them such wonderfully “dedicated volunteers,” and try to be ever so careful not to put too many demands on them, or expect too much from them, because they are simply “volunteers.” Well, enough of that word and mentality! May I humbly, yet boldly, say we are NOT volunteers. Some might say, “What’s the difference? What’s in a name? We’re all working for the Church and trying to get the job done. Who cares what you call it!” Well, my friends, and brothers and sisters in Christ, there really is a big differ- ence, and I feel that a name can make all the difference in the world, especially when that world is dealing with, and is, God’s kingdom. Let us, first of all, take a look at the definitions of each word and see how they pre- sent themselves. The word voluntary means “done, made, brought about, undertaken, etc., of one’s own accord or by free choice; of, pertaining to, or acting in accord with the will.” A volunteer is defined as “a person who voluntarily offers himself or herself for a service or undertaking; a person who performs a service willingly and without pay.” Some come to do what needs to be done in the Church out of our own free will. In 2 Corinthians, Saint Paul says, “Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (9:7). Furthermore, none of us, I believe, would ever expect to be paid by the church for singing in the choir or teaching Sunday School. But, is there not much more to our life in the Church than simply doing something freely and without pay? Well, let’s look at stewardship. A steward is defined as “a person who manages an- other’s property or financial affairs; one who administers anything as the agent of anoth- er or others; a person who has charge of the household of another, buying or obtaining food, directing the servants.” As you can see, the focus is much different. PRESENTATION

JESUS CHRIST WAS PRESENTED in the Temple in Luke 2:22-36, to fulfill the Jewish cus-tom of the 40-day blessing. Did Mary and Joseph do this as an act of volunteerism or was this an expression of their stewardship to God? We, too, were presented to God at our appropriate time. Are we now volunteers or stewards?

I would like to offer a few words here concerning the difference between volunteer-ism and stewardship, and how it correctly pertains to our life in the Church. Are we really look-ing for “volunteers” to do a project or are we looking for stewards to fulfill a ministry?

Who cares what you call it!” Well, my friends, and brothers and sisters in Christ, there really is a big differ-ence, and I feel that a name can make all the difference in the world, especially when that world is dealing with, and is, God’s kingdom.

Let us, first of all, take a look at the definitions of each word and see how they pre-sent themselves. I NEVER TIRE OF HEARING a visitor to our community compliment us on our ministries, or on our schools, or on the beauty of our sanctuary, or on the multiple opportunities our parishioners have to be further involved in the life of our church. Indeed, I trust all of us fully appreciate the “gem” that is our community…a gem that so many have labored for so long to establish, nurture and sustain. And at the risk of further belaboring this metaphor, the realization that we all must strive to maintain the luster on the spiritual gem that is our Saint Katherine Community is rather palpable. Aside from all the obvious ways that can be done in the here and now, yet another way to maintain our luster requires us to consider the future.

Last September, I used this space to inform you of our Capital Campaign project whose purpose, among other things, is to eliminate our community’s $2 million mortgage debt. Another significant, if not critical, aspect of such a Capital Campaign is to use it as a vehicle to reflect upon the future as a means of exploring a vision for the parish over the next three to five years. Pursuing such a methodology enables us to identify the essential steps we must take to secure the con-tinued spiritual growth of future generations of Orthodox faithful in our community-at-large.

You will soon receive additional information about our campaign along with a list of the priorities your leadership pro-poses in order to rejuvenate, enhance, and repair our parish campus as well as revitalize its ministries and staff so as to secure our continued future as a vibrant community in service to our Lord. In so doing, we have considered all the criti-cal elements of our community and its parishioners, including the needs of our staff, our ministries, and our physical plant, including our Sanctuary. All parishioners will receive a letter announcing our Capital Campaign as well as a State-ment of Need which will more fully describe the steps and projects deemed necessary to sustain our future. However, we fully appreciate that it is essential to secure your opinions and the advice of our parishioners. To that end, we have se-cured the services of Mr. Jerry Minetos, from the Archdiocese Office of Parish Development, who will assist in the ad-ministration of our campaign and be available to record your input through a series of confidential interviews. Once we have canvassed our community and refined our Statement of Need and its scope, we will embark in earnest on the critical fund raising portion of this Capital Campaign.

It is not hyperbole to state that our successful efforts in this matter will have a profound, if not historic, impact on the future of our community. All that is left for me to say is that we are excited about this campaign and I encourage your questions at any time. Let me close by saying what I said last September, “As we continue to communicate the commit-tee's goals and explain our fundraising needs, please find it in your hearts to support our Capital Campaign by offering your support to the best of your abilities. …Your prayerful assistance and monetary generosity to this holy endeavor is vital.”

I am deeply honored to again serve as your Parish Council President and welcome to our Executive Committee Nick Larigakis (Vice President), Maria Vargas (Secretary), and Maria Wills (Treasurer). On behalf of the Parish Council, I wish you all a very pleasant month and a blessed and Holy Lent.

REVIEWS OF BOOKS FOR TEENS

Royal Monastic: Princess Ileana of Romania by Bev Cooke. Publisher: Conciliar Press, first edition (2008). Paperback, 200 pages.

THE ROYAL MONASTIC is a book about Princess Ileana and her path to becoming a nun. It is a biography, but it is written in a story setting. For me, this made it much easier to follow and not be bored.

While reading this book, I was amazed at what Princess Ileana would do to be kind to other people and how she would risk her life to help another. I was also surprised to read that she accepted an offer to race against a German officer in her car. Princess Ileana was also the founder of The Orthodox Monastery of the of the Transfiguration in Ellwood City, PA.

I would say that this book was aimed for teens and pre-teens. As a teenager, I thought that The Royal Monastic was a good example of what a person can do to stay close to God in this century. ~Maria Ziu

THIS IS ONE of my favorite books. Her life story is really touching, and she is a great role model in Orthodoxy. She survives both world wars, communism, is forced to leave her native Romania, and yet she still manages to praise God for the good in her life. She finds her calling as a nun at 56 years old. After visiting the United States and dis-covering how few monasteries there were, she gets a blessing to build one. Sister Ileana left for Ellwood City and is later known as Mother Alexandra. ~Eleni Ziu

The Orthodox Way by Kallistos Ware. Publisher: St. Vla-dimir’s Seminary Press, second edition (2002). Paperback, 164 pages. THE ORTHODOX WAY is a wonderfully written book that provides a thorough analysis of Orthodox theology. In comparison to Ware’s renowned “The Orthodox Church,” this composition is easy to read, concise, and approachable to a younger audience.

This book clearly explains what it means to be Ortho-dox, how we view God, salvation, and the meaning of prayer. To a young person, these topics often arouse a sense of mystery and confusion, just “another tradition upheld by one’s ancestors that the rising generation of Orthodox cannot make sense of.” However, when reading this book, one will find reason in Orthodox worldview and teachings, and answers to perplexing questions, such as, “How can God be everywhere present? Does it make a difference if I pray or not? How is it possible for saints to become one with God? Why should I be concerned about my personal relationship with God?” The highlight of the book is the bishop’s explanation of the Trinity.

Ware concentrates on describing Orthodoxy and its fundamental teachings. Rather than making comparisons with Western churches, he simply states, “Why we do this.” As a student, simply understanding my faith gives me a greater advantage when challenged than having a general knowledge of a peer’s view. One attains a clear understanding of the Church and her doctrine when read-ing this book. ~Nina Ziu

GORKY

THE STORY OF THIS ARMENIAN ARTIST is devastatingly sad. His name was Vosdanig Adoian, born in 1904 near Lake Van in Turkey, he was very young when the ethnic cleansing of Armenians in 1915 took place. Along with his sister and mother, he was shuffled from place to place. Subsequently, his mother’s health failed, and she died of starvation in his arms. In 1919.

If the painting looks haunted and haunting; with the flat nature of the depiction and the extreme pallor of the moth-er’s face, it is intentional. Gorky( who took the name of Russian writer Maxim Gorky) was haunted by his tragic past for the rest of his life.

The father had left for America years before, settling in Massachusetts, so it was up to the young boy, not even in his teens, to be the protector of his mother and sister. This photo could be of a Greek boy and his mother taken in the early years of the 1900s. He’s wearing a formal coat; she the veil that so many women living in Greece and Turkey, Christian women, typically wore. I have photos of my grandmother wearing a veil in the same manner.

When he came to America in 1920, Arshile started paint-ing immediately. And when he moved to New York City in

. He could paint like Cezanne, Picasso, and Miro. As he apprenticed himself to the great painters of Europe, he insisted that no artist in America had any right to develop his own style until he had mastered those of the European avant-garde. Furthermore, he is credited with helping to create a new American modern art.

In this painting called THE ARTIST AND HIS MOTHER, his style is completely his own. He worked on this particular painting for 16 years. (There’s another one, less haunting and more colorful.) The pallor on the mother’s face derives from a constant scraping and reapplication of paint. He could not let go of this image. Perhaps the saddest aspect of the painting is that the boy’s arm and the mother’s are not connected. The eyes are riveting. It is as if the tragedy of her loss has burned itself onto the image: one of desper-ate loss and pain. This painting has to be seen in order to be experienced and understood. It can burn a hole in your heart.

The NGA’s East building on the upper level is where the Gorky paintings can be seen.

ALL AROUND THE TOWN Joanna Bose

portantly, we are taking care of that which has been given to us by God. This is His World, His Church, His Proper-ty, and we are His Children and Stewards who have been entrusted with the care of it all. “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein” (Psalm 24:1).

So, as the Lord Jesus Himself said to us, “Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master when he comes will find so doing. Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions” (Luke 12:42-44). As faithful stewards of God’s Holy House, we have a sacred obligation and responsibility not simply to volunteer a few extra moments, but rather to humbly and joyfully offer our time, our talents, and our resources back to God in the management and care of that which He has given to us.

I challenge each of us to become stewards of God’s Church. This is the year, and now is the time, to present our self to the Lord. We will fulfil the words we pray in the Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom, “Let us commit our selves and one another, and our whole life to Christ our God.”

God’s blessings,

MISSIONS AND OUTREACH Go therefore and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19)

OCMC 2017 Teams Announced. We have received the list of countries for the 2017 mission teams. There are 17 teams to Albania, Guatemala, Indonesia, Kenya (six sepa-rate teams), Mexico, and Alaska. These teams include teaching, construction, and health care. For a full list and dates go to OCMC.org. Please consider applying for a mission team. They are traditionally 2-3 weeks long. Sev-eral of our Saint Katherine parishioners have gone on teams and can share their experiences.

Missions Presentations after Salutation Services. Mis-sions presentations will again be offered after the first four Friday Salutation (Heretismi) services. The dates and top-ics are: March 3 (still open), March 10 (Jesse Brandow, on leave from Guatemala, will share the exciting events there, including the fact that thousands of Mayan Indians are converting to Orthodoxy), March 17 (Bill and Eleni Porter have led two teams to Project Mexico and will lead another this summer [see next column]), and March 24 (Betty and John Slanta will share their experiences in Alas-ka). These lectures are an excellent opportunity to keep up with what is going on around the Orthodox world.

Food Pantry Collection, March 12. “I was hungry and you gave me food…” (Matthew 25:35). In keeping with our Lenten tradition of helping others, we will have our next collection of food for our local Food Pantry on Sun-day, March 12. Our blue cloth bags will be distributed after liturgy on the prior two Sundays, February 26 and March 5. Please use these blue cloth bags to bring the food to the church. Please bring your non-perishable food or canned items to the foyer of the Meletis Charuhas Center. Please be generous. If you can’t bring food, consider giv-ing a check payable to “Columbia Baptist Church” with “Food Pantry/St. K” in the memo line. Get the children involved. What a wonderful way to teach our children to help the less fortunate and be faithful to our Lenten jour-ney.

OCMC Annual Benefit Dinner, April 30. Our annual OCMC Benefit Dinner will be Sunday, April 30. We will be honored to have Fr. Martin Ritsi, the Director of the OCMC, as our main speaker. This has been an exciting year for the OCMC. Orthodox churches have been started in several new countries by the OCMC. Come and hear the exciting things going on in the world of Orthodoxy. Details will be provided in an upcoming issue of DOXA. We will also have a silent auction (last year’s was so suc-cessful). We will auction off items from the many coun-tries that OCMC has sent teams.

Clothes and Toiletries. We continue to collect new and used (clean) clothes and unopened toiletries for the shelter every week. Please bring the items to the foyer of our community center. Thanks to all the families who help transport the items every week.

Diaper Drive, April 9. Our next diaper drive will be held on Palm Sunday, April 9.

Project Mexico, August 16-22. Our group registration for Home Building 2017 has been confirmed. Our dates are August 16-22 for 10 participants. Our team will stay at St. Innocent Orphanage outside of Tijuana. They will work at building homes for the poor and homeless nearby. If you are interested in going, please contact Bill or Eleni Porter at [email protected]. A non-refundable deposit of $100 per participant is due on or before January 31 or our registered spots will be released to those on the wait-ing list. The balance of $440 per participant is due on or before April 30. If our balance is not paid by April 30, our group is at risk of losing its spots to those on the waiting list. Please note that there will be a bake sale on Sunday, February 12, immediately following liturgy, to raise funds for the Project Mexico team.

Kenya Mission Team, October 2017. We have been in-vited by Bishop Neofitos of Kenya to visit his country and diocese in October of 2017. Fr. Costa will lead our team which will participate in teaching at the church school and helping build the school. Details are now being worked out and will be published in DOXA as soon as available. This should be an exciting experience. The Bishop did a mis-sion retreat here in 2016 and impressed all with his humili-ty and missionary zeal. We have heard that he is back in the States and may do another retreat at Saint Katherine. We will keep you posted!

Support a Mission Priest (SAMP). SAMP is a program of the OCMC which allows parishes and/or individuals to support an Orthodox mission priest in a third world coun-try. The cost is only $600 per year. These funds make it possible for priests to minister and serve their growing communities full time. Without these SAMP funds, they would have to have another job. Our mission priest this year is Fr. Nektarios Protus Isanya Mukenya of Kenya. Fr. Nektarios was born in 1972 in Kakamega, Kenya and embraced Orthodoxy as an adult. He was baptized in 1995, and after earning a diploma in Theology, he was ordained to the holy priesthood in 2004. Fr. Nektarios currently serves the parish of St. Makarios, Mulwanda, Kenya. If you are interested in supporting a Mission Priest, go to the OCMC website (OCMC.org) or ask Dr. John Demakis ([email protected]).

“MY TRAVELS WERE ALSO FILLED with many wonderful experiences and incidents. Were I to recount them all, twenty-four hours would not suffice!” (excerpt from The Way of the Pilgrim). Likewise, the Women’s Book Club has begun its thoughtful travels through this Russian classic about an unknown author’s journey in the mid-nineteenth century through Russia and Siberia to discover how to

“pray without ceasing.” You are welcome to be with us as we discuss the “wonderful experiences and incidents” that educate us about our Orthodox faith.

The book is available in the Saint Katherine bookstore, online, or bring in the copy from your home library. We meet from 10:30am to noon on Wednesdays, February 1 and 15 in the education center. Contact Despina Raizes ([email protected]) if you plan to come so she can send you discussion questions for the meeting.
