Welcome to St. Mark’s,
we are so glad you are with us today!
No matter where you are on your spiritual journey, you have a place here. This is Christ’s Church. There is a place for you here. We are a church that shares a living and daring confidence in God’s grace. Liberated by our faith, we embrace you as a whole person - questions, complexities and all. Join us as we do God’s work in Christ’s name for the life of the world.
Children are always welcome to participate in worship. We invite all children to try to be in worship through the children’s sermon (about 20 minutes) and then invite the children, if they want, to head to the nursery, but we love to have the children with us through the whole worship service! To help our youngest worshipers, “Little Lutheran Activity Bags” are located in the rear of the sanctuary which have crayons and worship appropriate coloring pages. We offer a children’s bulletin that has puzzles and activities for little worshipers to work on during the service, and we offer a “Soft Space” for infants and toddlers to spread out a bit in during worship. Worshiping with children is important to us, and so we hope you find these things helpful so that you may worship together as a family.
Restrooms are located through the back left – exit the sanctuary, go up the stairs, through the first room to the end of the hallway. If you need assistance, please see the attendants (ushers) at the back of the sanctuary.
Cell phones and other electronic devices are welcome to be used to Post, Tweet and Instagram the Good News you hear today, but we kindly ask you to turn the sound off on them so that they do not cause a distraction to other worshipers.
Our team of ushers is available throughout the service to be of any assistance you might need. Assistive Listening devices are available. Please see an usher.
Are you new or visiting St. Mark’s? If you would like to receive more information about St. Mark’s, we have several methods where you can leave your information with us. At the entry ways to the sanctuary, you will find our guest books in which you can leave your name and contact information, or in the pews we have blue cards that you can fill and place in the offering plate, or if you like, you can sign our electronic guest book. We’d be delighted to keep you informed about the many events and opportunities here at St. Mark’s and hope you will join us again. For the electronic book, open your mobile device to the bar code scanner and take a picture of this square QR code; it will take you to our electronic guest book.

Instructions Leader says We all say together
+ Gathering + The Holy Spirit gathers us together for worship
Introduction A note of joyful expectation marks today’s worship. Isaiah announces that the desert shall
rejoice and blossom. Jesus points to signs of God’s reign: the blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear. We wait with patience for the coming of the Lord, even as we rejoice at his presence among us this day: in word and holy supper, in church and in our homes, in silent reflection and in works of justice and love. We pray that God would open our eyes and ears to the wonders of Christ’s advent among us.
Prelude Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming
by Rowland H. Pritchard, arr. Sally DeFord
Traditional German, arr. Sally DeFord
Welcome Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God,
who comes to wake us from sleep, who leads us into the light of grace. Amen.
Confession &
Forgiveness Let us prepare the way of the Lord by confessing our sin against God and neighbor. Silence for reflection and self-examination. God of all time, we confess that we have not prepared for your merciful reign among us. We ignore our neighbors in need and fail in the labor of justice and peace.
5
In your mercy forgive us. Grant us wisdom to welcome your light and to seek the things that will endure until Christ comes again in glory. Amen Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God.
In ☩ Jesus Christ your sins are forgiven
and all things are made new. Rejoice in this good news! Amen.
Kyrie
Lighting of
the Advent
Wreath
The wilderness will dance and the dry places will sing praises to God. When we see the glory of the Lord revealed, we will be strengthened and saved! God’s peace opens our eyes. God’s gift of hope opens our hearts. With joy, we will praise the promised Savior of the world! Let us – with joy – kindle the light of the Lord. Light the Third candle on Advent wreath Blessed are you, O Lord our God, ruler of the universe. Your prophets spoke of a day when the desert would blossom and waters would break forth in the wilderness.
6
Bless us as we light the candles on this wreath. Strengthen our hearts as we prepare for the coming of the Lord. May he give water to all who thirst, for he is our light and our salvation. Blessed be God forever. Amen.

Prayer of
the Day Let us pray, Silence may be kept before the prayer. Stir up the wills of all who look to you, Lord God, and strengthen our faith in your coming, that, transformed by grace, we may walk in your way; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. The Assembly may be seated.

+ Word + God speaks to us in scripture, preaching, song and prayer
First Lesson Isaiah 35:1-10
The prophet describes the return from the Babylonian captivity as a joyous procession to Zion. God’s coming reign will bring a renewal of creation in which health and wholeness will be restored. There is no need for fear, for God is coming to save A Reading from Isaiah, 1The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus 2it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the Lord, the majesty of our God. 3Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. 4Say to those who are of a fearful heart, “Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you.” 5Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; 6then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; 7the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water;
10
the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. 8A highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not travel on it, but it shall be for God’s people; no traveler, not even fools, shall go astray. 9No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. 10And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
Psalmody Psalm 122
The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down. (Ps. 146:8) 5Happy are they who have the God of Jacob | for their help, whose hope is in the | Lord their God; 6who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that | is in them; who keeps promis- | es forever; 7who gives justice to those who are oppressed, and food to | those who
11
hunger. The Lord sets the | captive free. 8The Lord opens the eyes of the blind; the Lord lifts up those who | are bowed down; the Lord| loves the righteous. R 9The Lord cares | for the stranger; the Lord sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way | of the wicked. 10The Lord shall | reign forever, your God, O Zion, throughout all generations. | Hallelujah! R
Second
Lesson Romans 13:11-
14
In anticipation of the Lord’s coming, Christians are called upon to cultivate patience rather than discontent.
A Reading from Romans,
7Be patient, therefore, beloved, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. 8You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near. 9Beloved, do not grumble against one another, so that you may not be judged. See, the Judge is standing at the doors! 10As an example of suffering and patience, beloved, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God.

Gospel
Acclamation
The assembly stands to welcome the gospel.
Gospel
Reading Matthew 24:36-44
John the Baptist expects the Messiah to bring God’s judgment upon the earth. From a prison cell, he wonders whether Jesus is the one who will do this The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. Glory to you O Lord. 2When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his disciples 3and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?” 4Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: 5the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. 6And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.” 7As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? 8What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal
13
palaces. 9What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10This is the one about whom it is written, ‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’ 11Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. The assembly may be seated.
Children’s

Children are invited forward for a short lesson before the sermon. After the children’s sermon, the children are invited to return to their seats with their parents or leave to spend time in the nursery.

Apostle’s
Creed
Together with the whole people of God, let us confess our faith with the words of the Apostle’s Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell.* On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

Prayers of
the People Prayers reflect the wideness of God’s mercy for the whole world
The Assisting Minister invites us into prayer As we anticipate the fullness of the presence of Christ, we join with the church throughout the world, praying for all who are in need. Each portion of the prayers ends with: let us pray. Have mercy, O God. The presiding minister concludes the prayers with these words: Merciful God, hear the prayers of your people, those spoken aloud and those known only to you, and grant us peace through Jesus Christ, our coming Savior. Amen.

+ Meal + God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ.
Offering An offering is gathered to support the mission of the church. Funds gathered today will help sustain our ministry efforts at St. Mark’s, support the wider national church and help those in need. We are also collecting gifts for families this Advent season so they can have an incredible Christmas just like us. So when their kids wake up on the Sunday they are not met with an empty or near empty tree. So we are collecting gifts for kid’s, but we are also collecting dignity for parents. The ability to experience the joy we all do as our loved one’s rip open a package. There is more information in the back of sanctuary.

Words of Institution
Holy One, the beginning and the end, the giver of life: Blessed are you for the birth of creation. Blessed are you in the darkness and in the light. Blessed are you for your promise to your people. Blessed are you in the prophets’ hopes and dreams. Blessed are you for Mary’s openness to your will. Blessed are you for your Son Jesus, the Word made flesh. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. With this bread and cup we remember your Word dwelling among us, full of grace and truth. We remember our new birth in his death and resurrection. We look with hope for his coming. Come, Lord Jesus. Holy God, we long for your Spirit. Come among us. Bless this meal. May your Word take flesh in us. Awaken your people. Fill us with your light. Bring the gift of peace on earth. Come, Holy Spirit. All praise and glory are yours, Holy One of Israel,
20
Word of God incarnate, Power of the Most High, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Lord’s Prayer
Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit we are bold to pray in the words our Savior taught us, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those
who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. The Assembly may be seated.

Service Ministry Announcements:
Ways you can help us serve God here at St. Mark’s
Cottage Meetings Update Thank you to the many people who have already attended this year’s cottage meetings. At the three we have held thus far—fantastic conversation about the future of St. Mark’s, ministry growth and excitement has been the topic of conversation! There is still time to sign up for a cottage meeting! We want as many people as possible to attend the cottage meetings. Mostly so that we can hear from folks about the dreams and desires for the future of our congregation as we stand at a turning point in our congregation! We are getting ready to grow in some pretty exciting ways and we want to have conversations about that growth and share ideas from the leadership of this congregation in ways that you can partner with us in growing the ministry of St. Mark’s. Upcoming Meetings:
Sunday December 18th 4:30pm @ the Ruggeiro’s 133 West 9th Ave Conshohocken, PA 19428.
Thursday December 29th 7:30pm @ Pastor’s House—512 Harry Street Conshohocken, PA 19428
Wednesday January 4th @ 7pm@ the Pokalo’s House 1106 Freedley St Conshohocken, PA 19428
Items for our “Christmas Families” As many of you know we gather items that families are in need of to celebrate Christmas with dignity, agency, and joy. We need the gifts back by December 18th for delivery to the families. Let’s help the eyes of children everywhere in this area light up on Christmas morning. As we try to step outside our own concerns and try to step into the pain of others who aren’t as privileged as us.

We like to say that we are also “fed” by the experience of worship, so Dinner Church seeks to feed you both spiritually and physically Dinner Church is a very relaxed worship experience, some come right from work, some right from the gym, some from just picking the kids up. Please take this opportunity to fill our sanctuary with the spirit of Advent!
Longest Night Service Christmas can be a painful time for some. It may be the first Christmas without a loved family member who has recently died; it may be a time that has always been difficult. The constant refrain on social media and television, in shopping malls and churches, about the happiness of the season, about getting together with family and friends, reminds many people of what they have lost or have never had. The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation - all these can make us feel very alone in the midst of the celebrating and spending. We need the space and time to acknowledge our sadness and concern; we need to know that we are not alone. Our spirits sink as the days grow shorter. We feel the darkness growing deeper around us. We need encouragement to live the days ahead of us. For these reasons, St Marks offers a special “Longest Night” service on December 20th at 7pm. Come out, and join with us in sharing and hearing prayers, scripture, and music that acknowledge that God’s presence is for those who mourn, for those who struggle - and that God’s Word comes to shine light into our darkness. Everyone, regardless of church background (or lack of it) is welcome. The short service will be followed by a brief time for light refreshments and fellowship.
Christmas Eve Schedule This Christmas eve we will have two opportunities to celebrate the coming of the Christ Child. We by this point have been sitting in anticipation for a month for hope to burst forth into the world. The mystery of an all-powerful God stepping into the world clothed in the weakness of a newborn child. We will be gathering at 4pm for a more reflective time. At 7pm we will be having a more traditional Christmas Eve service. We hope that you can join us in the hustle and bustle of the season to pause and marvel at Immanuel in community.
30
Christmas Day is on a Sunday! This year Christmas Day falls on Sunday, so we will be holding a Christmas Day worship service as part of our normal Sunday morning worship at 9:30am. This year we will gather to tell the story of the light that dispels the darkness as we read the prologue of John’s Gospel and reflect on the light that scatters the darkness in our own lives. We invite children (and maybe even adults) to bring toys with them that they may have opened that morning to be blessed as we thank God for the abundance of joy that comes on Christmas morning. We will also be singing some of our favorite Christmas Carols as we prepare to “Go Tell it on the Mountains” that Jesus Christ is born
Fellowship and Evangelism Ministry Announcements:

Caroling Conshy December 23rd we will be Caroling Conshy! We will gather at 5:45pm here at St Mark’s Lutheran Church to go out and about in the community and spread some Christmas cheer! Anyone is welcome whether they are part of the St. Marks family or not. We would love for this to an incredible witness to the community. Not to mention it’s just fun! Also we have it on good authority Emily is putting together a list of hymns that will rock the house! So please consider joining us for this great event.
POWER Team Vicar Lenny here. You may have heard me talk about POWER. After consultation with my internship committee and unanimous vote from church council we have decided to become a POWER Metro partner congregation. Why? It’s scriptural. In the Gospel over and over Jesus was incredibly merciful to the individual sins of a person. He offered grace and mercy to all he encountered. But when it came to social sin, and systems that oppressed the poor and marginalized of Judah, he was incredibly prophetic and active in dismantling those systems. While we do wonderful work here attending to the needs of those on the mar-gins, I know there is a heart to ad-dress the systemic inequities that make it harder for some to arise out of those conditions. POWER Metro will help equip us to better live into our
31
baptismal promise and do more than we are now. I’m putting together a team that will join me on this important ministry of St. Mark’s. If interested email me [email protected] or call the office.
To find out more about the work of POWER and POWER Metro visit their website: http://powerinterfaith.org/
Council Seeking Nominations for Elections Are you creative, love the gospel and have a passion and a heart for the ministry of St. Mark’s? Council is seeking folks who would be interested to serve on our church leadership team. Members who are elected by the congregation serve a 2 year term on council. Members are eligible for reelection once. Members attend a monthly meeting of the church council and serve as leadership for various special projects and key ministry areas around the church during their term. This year we will have 3 vacancies on council that we need to fill with new incoming members, as those leaving are at their term limits. If you feel called to share your gifts of time and talents, please speak to our Council President Joe Jacovino, to Pastor, or to our nominating chair—Joe Ruggiero to find out more information.
