WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES – May 13, 2018 (Eph.4:1-13; Mark 16:15-20) Vinal Van Benthem ofs

“Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel…drive out demons…speak new languages…lay hands on the sick…”

After only two weeks in the hospital Marta was dead. Her family and friends were devastated. It had all happened so quickly that they had not had time to prepare. And while the funeral director worked with Marta’s husband to take care of the many details involved in preparing the body and seeing to the burial, the family needed more. They needed someone to help them to understand and to heal. So, since Marta had not belonged to any specific church, they called on Henry, a friend who ministered in a church nearby, to help them plan the wake, funeral and committal services.

Henry prepared the ritual prayers and made arrangements with the funeral director to have funeral booklets available for the various services. Then he met with Marta’s family and, together, they chose music and Scripture passages that seemed appropriate. Once that was done Henry asked those who felt comfortable doing so to proclaim the gospel passages they had chosen and to share their memories of Marta.

Two of Marta’s children offered to read the Bible passages they had chosen. Another offered to write a eulogy – to share stories of the times they had laughed and the times they had cried, the times they had argued and the times they had made up from their arguments. And, in spite of their nervousness, their love for one another allowed Marta’s children to reach out to grieving family and friends.

These people don’t work for the church. For most of them, speaking from the pulpit was like speaking a new language. Yet even as they spoke through their tears, their proclamation of the good news helped drive out the demons of des-pair with gospel hope. In sharing their memories they were able to bring joy and begin the process of healing for Marta’s husband and all those who had come to share his sorrow. We are called to build up the body of Christ. Last week Marta’s family and friends answered that call.

Presentation of the Gifts at Mass

Are you, or your family, willing to take up the gifts at the weekend Masses? The ushers occasionally have a hard time finding people who are willing to do this important ministry. Please sign up on the clipboard on the Ush-ers Counter after your weekend Mass. Holly Saunders will get back to you.

Betty Manion is Retiring!

Betty Manion will be retiring from SMM as Director of Religious Education after 27 years of hard work, fun and frolic. She has been devoted to the faith formation of the young people of our parish. Whether in the class room, the worship space or at YNIA, the prayerful lives of our children has been her passion. She has not only been a devoted DRE, but also an integral member of our parish, an awe-some staff member and colleague and most importantly a great wife, mother and grandmother.

Betty is retiring as DRE but not from St. Mary Magdalene. You will continue to see her as an active member of our parish and of course the chairperson of Wine and Roses.

We will be celebrating Betty Manion, and all she has meant to us, on Sunday, May 20 after the 10 am Mass in the Fellowship Hall. Please join us in wishing Betty blessings in her retirement.

A basket will be available for cards.

time to visit.

From the Gardening Angels

It is always nice when we are working around the church to hear words of thanks and appreciation for the beautiful grounds of the church. This is, for all of us, a ministry of love for God. We are appealing to those who attend St Mary Magdalene for your help and generosity when donating for the OUTSIDE ENVIRONMENT Envelope (outside flowers, etc.) in the May packet for donations. Our sincere thanks for your gifts from last year.
