Fr. Beerman’s Column

May the peace of Christ be with you,

Please remember to sign up your children for

Totus Tuus summer faith formation program

which will be at St. John Vianney in Fairmont July

21-26. Many other churches have Vacation Bible

School and this is similar to those programs but it

includes the celebration of the Mass and learning

about the Sacraments of the Church as well as

Marian devotion. There is a daytime program that

runs from 9:00am to 2:30pm for those going into

1st through 6th grade. This will take place on

Monday through Friday, and includes large group

activities and songs, learning about the Sacraments

and Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary,

celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and

the Mass as well as games and introduction to the

lives of the saints. The evening program runs from

7:30-9:30 for those going into 7th through 12th

grade (graduated seniors are welcome as well).

This includes games, skits, learning about the

sacraments, Adoration and Confession and an

activity night. Students from Sts. Peter and Paul

Parish, Holy Family, and St. Mary’s are strongly

encouraged to attend as well.

We are in need of volunteers to provide meals for

the team, snacks and to serve the snacks, and

everyone is welcome to come to the potluck

supper on Wednesday July 24 at 5:30pm.

During the month of July we will be celebrating

the following feast days:

July 3 is the celebration of St. Thomas the

Apostle, who doubted that Jesus had rose from the

dead until he could put his finger in the nail marks

and his hand in the side of Jesus. Because of the

doubt of St. Thomas, our faith has been

strengthened. He is the patron saint of those who

struggle with doubts of their faith. He is also the

patron saint of builders and those who are blind.

July 6 is the feast day of St. Maria Goretti who

gave her life rather than commit a sin of impurity

with the hired hand on their farm. She was stabbed

14 times by a file, but appeared later to the man

who did it, and forgave him, saying she would

pray that he could be forgiven this sin by God. He

converted and became a brother, spending the rest

of his life in a monastery doing penance for his

sin. Maria Goretti is the patron saint of teenage

girls and those striving to live purity.

July 16 is the memorial of Our Lady of Mount

Carmel who appeared to St. Simon Stock with the

scapular saying, “Whoever dies wearing this

scapular shall not suffer the fires of hell.” There

will be a special Carmelite celebration on that day

at Annunciation Hermitage in Austin, MN.

July 23 is the feast day of St. Bridget of Sweden.

She had visions in prayer of the sufferings of

Christ and the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She

is the patron saint of Sweden.

Finally on July 25 is the feast day of St. James

the Greater. He was an apostle to the people of

Spain and his tomb is at Santiago de Compostela.

This has become a famous pilgrimage site, with

many people walking the Camino for several days

or weeks to arrive at the church of St. James and

receive the pilgrim blessing.

In next week’s gospel, Luke 10:25-37, we have

the parable of the Good Samaritan in response to

the question, “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus tells

this story to illustrate that to love our neighbor

means to be compassionate to others in their time

of need. The Samaritan, and not the priest or

Levite, actually came to the aid of the man who

was robbed and beaten. It is also a parable of Jesus

himself who has come to the aid of humanity who

has been robbed of original grace by Satan and left

for dead. Jesus cares for us by pouring oil and

wine into our wounds and brings about healing in

our souls. Please be generous to the missionary

appeal and pray for our young people who are

attending the retreat at Steubenville Rochester.

God Bless you,

Fr. Andrew Beerman

From Fr. Klein

How can I say thanks enough? I could fill a page. Thanks

first to God, who told Bishop Quinn six years ago to ask

me to come here. Why do I ever doubt God? Why do I

ever question the Holy Spirit’s inspirations?? I should

have known from the beginning that something good was

in store for me.

Thanks, second, to the staff & support people closest to

me day-to-day: Pat Boettcher, Angie Nagel & Duane

Rorman. They’ve had a special place in the service of

these parishes in recent years & have been not only good

to work with for me personally but always have the good

of members & our parishes uppermost in mind. “One

plants, another waters, God causes the growth,” Paul

says (1 Cor. 3:8-9). As waterers (& more), they have

been models of respect & trustworthiness. We expect no

less from those who work for the Church. They exceed.

And thanks as much to the many others in St. Mary’s &

SS Peter & Paul who are not paid but are no less

dedicated to the life of our parishes & the mission of the

Church—people like Council members & cemetery

sextons come to mind. Also, I have a special place for the

many people who help with liturgy: musicians, sacristans,

coordinators of liturgical ministries, homebound & St.

Luke’s communion ministers. And catechists! The list

goes on & on. It isn’t so much my personal thanks that go

to you (after all, it isn’t me you’re serving!), but the

thanks of the many, many parishioners you love & serve.

They thank you. (I’m just the messenger.)

I leave with lots & lots of gratitude, & inspiration. (As

Melvin Udall said to Carol Connelly, “You make me want

to be a better man.”) And also memories of day-to-day

life here that included a rich vein of amusement. Your

names & faces are everywhere & will stay vivid as I

repeat to myself—& others (always prudently!)—many,

many things that I heard from you. Some I wrote down. I

wish I had more!

Finally, I leave with some envy. I envy Frs. Beerman &

Mulligan for what they’re inheriting. And I envy you for

the leadership & ministry & priestly & liturgical presence

you will have in them. You’re blessed. I can’t imagine

myself not a priest, but if I could I would want to be a

parishioner at St. Mary’s & SS Peter & Paul. And so,

finally, to God I can only pray, “Loving God, I commend

to your care all those you have given us to love.”

Benefit for Malcom Maday son of David and Bethany Maday

will be held on Sat. July 13th

at the Ghost Town Tavern in

Inogene. A Pork Burger meal will be served from 5pm until

gone for a free will donation. There will be a silen auction from

5-7PM. Malcom had a liver transplant on April 25th

and the

proceeds will help the Maday family cover current and future

medical expenses. Donations may also be sent to Bank

Midwest in Fairmont in Malcolm Maday’s name.

The Courier, our Diocesan newspaper, will no longer be

mailed to parishioners. They are now available at the church

entrance at SSPP & St. Mary’s. Take one for yourself and

anyone who may not get to church to pick theirs up. The July

issue is here now.

Church (235 East 7th St.) in Blue Earth. The drive is open for

The 48th annual LITOMYSL SUMMER FESTIVAL at Holy Trinity Catholic Church at Litomysl, rural Owatonna, will be Sunday, July 28th, beginning with a Polka Mass at 10 a.m. by the Litomyslaneous Polka Band. Lunch in the church basement 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Food and refreshment stands outdoors 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to come to the Czech community of Litomysl on July 28th for a fun-filled day. (Continued on back page)

Next weekend, we will host Fr. Vincent Germace from Nigeria to speak about the work of the Catholic Diocese of Minna, Nigeria in bringing the message of Christ to the Poor. The Catholic population is estimated to be 95,000 and growing. Minna Diocese ministers to mostly peasant farmers, petty traders and students. Given the challenges of poverty and being in the midst of a Muslim population that is not always tolerant, the Diocese, is committed to responding to the issues of social justice, health care and human development. Don’t miss this great opportunity to share in the missionary work of the Catholic Church by standing in solidarity with your brothers and sisters in need. The Diocese depends on your

kind generosity to effectively provide and sustain primary

health care programs, like immunization, clinics for the

treatment of minor diseases, pre-natal and post-natal care for

pregnant mothers in poor and remote areas of the diocese. We

build schools in rural communities, dig cisterns for cleaner and

better sanitary conditions and support the building of churches

in rural communities for the dignity of the Eucharist. Minna

Diocese appreciates whatever support you are able to give at

this time. God bless you
