Dear People of God, Our Easter Season continues and the joy of this Holy Season is rooted in new life, beginnings and trust. This power-ful story beautifully connects with the Easter Season…. enjoy…..

GOD LIVES UNDER THE BED

I envy Kevin. My brother, Kevin, thinks God lives under his bed. At least that's what I heard him say one night. He was praying out loud in his dark bedroom, and I stopped to listen. “Are you there, God?” he said. “Where are you? Oh, I see. Under the bed....” I giggled softly and tiptoed off to my own room. Kevin 's unique perspectives are often a source of amusement. But that night something else lingered long after the humor. I realized for the first time the very different world Kevin lives in. He was born 30 years ago, mentally disabled as a result of difficulties during labor. Apart from his size (he 's 6-foot-2), there are few ways in which he is an adult. He reasons and communicates with the capabilities of a 7-year-old, and he always will. He will probably always believe that God lives under his bed, that Santa Clause is the one who fills the space under our tree every Christmas and that airplanes stay up in the sky because angels carry them. I remember wondering if Kevin realizes he is different. Is he ever dissatisfied with his monotonous life? Up before dawn each day, off to work at a workshop for the disabled, home to walk our cocker spaniel, return to eat his favorite macaroni-and-cheese for dinner, and later to bed. The only variation in the entire scheme is laundry, when he hovers excitedly over the washing machine like a mother with her newborn child. He does not seem dissatisfied. He lopes out to the bus every morning at 7:05, eager for a day of sim-ple work. He wrings his hands excitedly while the water boils on the stove before dinner, and he stays up late twice a week to gather our dirty laundry for his next day's laundry chores. And Saturdays - oh, the bliss of Saturdays! That's the day my Dad takes Kevin to the airport to have a soft drink, watch the planes land, and speculate loudly on the destination of each passenger inside. “That one's goin` to Chi-car-go!” Kevin shouts as he claps his hands. His anticipation is so great he can hardly sleep on Friday nights. And so goes his world of daily rituals and weekend field trips. He doesn't know what it means to be discontent. His life is simple. He will never know the entanglements of wealth or power, and he does not care what brand of clothing he wears or what kind of food he eats. His needs have always been met, and he never worries that one day they may not be. His hands are diligent. Kevin is never so happy as when he is working. When he unloads the dishwasher or vacuums the carpet, his heart is completely in it. He does not shrink from a job when it is begun, and he does not leave a job until it is finished. But when his tasks are done, Kevin knows how to relax. He is not obsessed with his work or the work of others. His heart is pure. He still believes everyone tells the truth, promises must be kept, and when you are wrong, you apologize instead of argue. Free from pride and unconcerned with appearances, Kevin is not afraid to cry when he is hurt, angry or sorry. He is always transparent, always sincere. And he trusts God. Not confined by intellectual reasoning, when he comes to Christ, he comes as a child. Kevin seems to know God - to really be friends with Him in a way that is difficult for an “educated” person to grasp. God seems like his closest compan-ion. In my moments of doubt and frustrations with my Christianity, I envy the security Kevin has in his simple faith. It is then that I am most willing to admit that he has some divine knowledge that rises above my mortal questions. It is then I realize that perhaps he is not the one with the handicap, I am. My obligations, my fear, my pride, my cir-cumstances - they all become disabilities when I do not trust them to God's care. Who knows if Kevin comprehends things I can never learn? After all, he has spent his whole life in that kind of inno-cence, praying after dark and soaking up the goodness and love of God. And one day, when the mysteries of heaven are opened, and we are all amazed at how close God really is to our hearts, I'll realize that God heard the simple prayers of a boy who believed that God lived under his bed. Kevin won't be surprised at all! Our lives sometimes get too complicated. Trust in God who runs after us. Life also involves surrender and letting go….and, by the way, take a peek under the bed.

On the journey with you, Fr. Greg

Liturgical Bits & Bytes The Holy, Holy, Holy is our response to the preface. It is our declaration of praise to God in words from Isaiah and the gospel of Matthew. It is our chance to voice our praise aloud. Because this is a very important part of the ritual, it, along with the other eucharistic acclamations, is one that should be sung. These acclamations are not singing that is added to the liturgy, but parts of the liturgy that are designed to be sung. It is more important to sing them than to sing the gathering song, recessional, etc. The singing of these acclamations is the doing of the ritual.

Following the Holy, Holy, Holy

The first part of the Eucharistic Prayer to follow the Holy, Holy, Holy is a statement of the good that God has done for us, and our praise of God for the goodness shown to us. This establishes the premise on which the rest of the prayer is based, that is, God’s goodness to us. Copyright © 2008 Resource Publications, Inc. All rights reserved.

THEMES OF CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING

The Church's social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society. Modern Catholic social teaching has been articulated through a tradition of papal, conciliar, and episcopal documents. The depth and richness of this tradition can be understood best through a direct reading of these documents. In these brief reflections, we highlight several of the key themes that are at the heart of our Catholic social tradition.

Rights and Responsibilities

The Catholic tradition teaches that human dignity can be protected and a healthy community can be achieved only if human rights are protected and responsibilities are met. Therefore, every person has a fundamental right to life and a right to those things required for human decency. Corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilities—to one another, to our families, and to the larger society.

A SPECIAL INVITATION FROM FATHER KURT Dear Friends

A few weeks ago, I shared some homily reflections with all of you about my personal struggle with the spirit of quiet and silence in my life.

After my homily that weekend many of you shared with me your own challenges with so many dis-tractions in your life. Some even asked if I would offer one more opportunity for a Silent Directed Retreat on the beautiful grounds of Mundelein before I leave St. Mary of the Woods for my new parish, and, I heard you!

So, please hear this as an invitation from my heart to yours. Would you consider coming away with me for a weekend to rest with God? Together, in the silence of a directed retreat, we might be surprised what we “hear.” The retreat is based on the teachings of St. Ignatius of Loyola who believed we can only hear the true voice of God when we get away from the many distractions and the noise of our lives that pull our hearts in so many directions.

I have reserved some retreat rooms at the Car-dinal Stritch Retreat House, a secluded space on the campus of the Seminary in Mundelein. The dates are Friday evening June 25th beginning with a light sup-per at 7PM until Sunday afternoon June 27th about 1:30pm.

God will be the true “Director” of this type of retreat. I will be available to focus the retreat , suggest ways for us to remain open and committed to the silence, celebrate the Eucharist, and to have private confidential conversations for any who wish.

The cost of the retreat will be $150. This includes all of our meals and the room. The spirit of the retreat will be silence, including the meals, to help us truly hear God’s voice in our lives. Even in the silence, I have discovered both as a retreatant and as a Director, that a bonding happens for those on the retreat.

If funds are a concern, we will do our best to offer partial and full scholarships. If you are interested in this experience, I invite you to talk to others who have been on this type of retreat with me from our com-munity before. Feel free to give me a call at the rectory—1-773-763-0206—so I may respond to any ques-tions or concerns you might have.

Finally, the Retreat House Staff asks that I give a final list of retreatants to them one week prior to the start of the retreat. They want to make sure we are welcomed and have the proper accommodations.

Peace, Father Kurt

CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP

Over the past five years I have been humbled to serve among you. I am amazed at the number of you who have assumed the role of caregiver for significant others in your life. In my opinion, you are truly unsung heroes. But, where do you get support? When you are at a low point, where do you turn for someone to simply listen to you and understand? I have started a support group for caregivers here at St. Mary of the Woods that, hopefully, will continue after I move on. Please join us for a gathering at the Parish Center, (formerly the Convent), on Thursday, May 20th. We will begin with prayer at 6:45pm for those of you who would like to join us. Soup, bread and refreshments will be served. The sharing part of the meeting will begin at 7:00pm. We will end by 8:30pm. If any questions, please call Fr. Kurt at the Rectory at 773-763-0206. Peace and all God’s blessings, Father Kurt and Brian Bullock

Annual Mother's Day Mass with Cardinal George—11am at the Cathedral. The annual Mass for Expectant Mothers with Car-dinal George will be celebrated on Mother's Day, May 9, at 11 a.m. at Holy Name Cathedral. All mothers will receive a blessing from the Cardinal. with a special blessing for expectant mothers and their unborn children! Expectant mothers will also receive from the Cardinal a white silk rose and medal of St. Gerard Majella, the patron saint of ex-pectant mothers. A reception will not follow in order to free up parking for the next Mass, but Cardinal George will greet the congregation as they depart the Church. All are welcome!

When spring cleaning, if you find shoes that don’t fit or are no longer worn, our parent-volunteer group, Kids-Parents Affect-ing Communities Together (K-PACT) will be collecting used shoes for an organization called Stuff for the Poor. (stuffforthepoor.org). The founder, Providence Rubingisa, a survivor of the Rwandan genocide, recently spoke to our group about this amazing program. This organization uses the profits from the sale of these used shoes to pay for the education of 128 AIDS orphans in the village of Mbwewe, Tanzania. KPACT’s target is a minimum of 500 pairs of shoes, enough to pay the school costs for one orphan for one year. We will be collecting shoes through Friday, May 21st. All shoes are welcome, except for flip-flops and winter boots. If inter-ested, please contact me, Kristin McGill, at 773/283-6483 or [email protected]. We will have boxes in the back of church to collect your used shoes on the weekends of May 9th and 16th.

NORWOOD SENIORS NETWORK SEEKS MEAL DELIVERY VOLUNTEERS

Looking for a way to assist others and give back to

the community? Norwood Seniors Network, a not-for-profit community outreach program, is in dire need of volunteers to help deliver meals to area seniors for one or more days a week or as seldom as one day-a-month.

Each week, the Seniors Network, 6009 N. Nina Ave. in Chicago's Norwood Park neighborhood, pro-vides low-cost freshly-prepared meals to older adults who want to remain independent in their own homes. Volunteers deliver the hot nutritious meals and a lighter supper meal to more than 50 seniors, on Mondays through Fridays, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., following carefully mapped routes. Most routes consist of eight-to-nine houses and can be completed within about one and one-half hours. Neighborhoods and communities served by the Network include Edgebrook, Edison Park, Gladstone Park, Jefferson Park, Norwood Park, Portage Park, Sauganash and the suburbs of Harwood Heights, Niles, Norridge, and Park Ridge.

Persons interested in volunteering must have their own vehicle. For more information, please call Bryan Manasse, Norwood Life Care Foundation, at (773) 577-5387 or email him at

Demoralization of the Church ESSAY IN THEOLOGY By Rev. Richard P. McBrien The situation in the Catholic Church is similar to the situation we find today in U.S. politics. In both realms, there is a significant group that is disaffected. The difference is that seriously disaffected Catho-lics tend to be somewhere left of center, while seriously disaffected Americans tend to be on the right. What they have in common is a deep sense of alienation from those in power, whether in the Church or in the nation. Catholics who had invested their hopes in the renewal and reforms brought about by the Second Vati-can Council are discouraged and demoralized because those hopes seemed to have been dashed by two con-secutive, aggressively conservative papacies and the bishops they have appointed and promoted. Largely white, Republican-leaning American citi-zens, such as the Tea Partiers, cannot accept a Democrat in the White House-and a Democrat of color at that-nor Democratic control of both houses of Congress. They feel that their country has been taken away from them, unaware of, or in denial about, the inexorable demographic trends that have long been underway. Soon whites like them will be a minority within the United States of America. They place their hopes on repeal of this or that piece of legislation, especially the recently passed health-care reform bill, and in the next election. In the mean-time, they shout epithets and carry signs comparing President Obama to Adolf Hitler and predict the nation's slide into socialism or worse under the current Admini-stration. Demoralized Catholics, on the other hand, follow a very different course. They tend not to shake their fists in anger, but simply to drift away from their Church, as the Pew Study of religions in the United States reported almost exactly two years ago. If ex-Catholics constituted a church unto them-selves, they would be the second largest denomination today-second only to the Catholic Church itself, which would be a lot smaller were it not for the constant stream of immigrants from Mexico, Central and South America, Asia, Africa, and other parts of the world. The leadership of the Catholic Church has thus far tended to ignore this trend. It's almost as if they never heard of the Pew Study, much less studied and discussed it seriously. The same is true of their response to the greatest crisis ever to hit the Catholic Church in the United States, and the greatest crisis to hit the universal Church since the 16th-century Reformation itself, namely, the

sexual-abuse scandal in the priesthood. The initial reaction, at the highest levels of church governance, was to deny the reality of the crisis and to accuse the media (sometimes even identified as "Jewish-controlled") of creating the crisis in order to do damage to the Catholic Church. The hierarchy's default mode was to protect the Church and its priesthood at all costs. Concern for the victims of sexual abuse was an entirely secondary mat-ter. Indeed, bishops sometimes scolded lay persons for allegedly making up "sordid tales" about Father, or im-posing a vow of silence, with threats of hellfire to insure enforcement of the vow. The hierarchy in the United States ignored warn-ings from well-informed observers like Father Thomas Doyle, O.P., that if they did not effectively address this problem, they would expose the Catholic Church to law-suits totaling over one billion dollars. His unheeded warning has been fulfilled, and then some. Bishops in other countries, including the Vatican itself, presumed to lecture American Catholics, insisting that the crisis was confined to America and was the product of corrupt American values. Now that the crisis has spread to Europe and other parts of the Catholic world, reaching even the high-est office in the Church, it is no longer possible for Catholic leaders in other countries to look down their noses at the Catholic Church in the United States. The sexual-abuse crisis is global in scope. As a result of its spread to other parts of the world, the sense of discouragement and demoralization among Catholics has become even more intense. What is to be done about it? First, church offi-cials must make it clear that their greatest concern is for the victims of sexual abuse, not for the reputation of the institutional Church and its priesthood. Second, bishops must be completely open and truthful about what sins of omission or commission they may have committed in hiding the problem or, worse, in lying about it and in keeping predatory priests in pastoral ministry. Third, the Vatican must not only defrock guilty priests, but also begin finally to remove bishops who covered up for these priests. Truthful and decisive leadership is the only effec-tive antidote to demoralization.

BAPTISM PREPARATION PROGRAM The St. Mary of the Woods Baptism Preparation Program is for all parents who wish to have their children baptized. The program consists of one evening meeting with a leader couple and Fr. Kurt. The meeting takes place at 7:15pm.

The dates through April of 2010 are as follows: Tuesday, May 11, 2010

If you are expecting a child or already have a new addition to your family and have NOT been through the preparation program, please call Bill Mages at home—773-763-7133, or at the Rectory—773-763-0206, in order to sign up for one of the meetings. Please remember that you need to attend a meeting before we can schedule a date for a baptism.

God bless you!
