28h Sunday in Ordinary Time October 11, 2020

And now “the Kingdom of heaven may be likened to a wedding feast,” as we heard

the opening words of today’s Gospel of St. Matthew. Do you happen to remember any par-ticular wedding reception you attended that was kind of over the top: the venue, the table decorations, the spectacular lighting, the food, the fabulous wedding cake display, the wed-ding cake, the live orchestra, the number of invited guests, the favors at the end of the even-ing and all the little extras that were from a gracious host and hostess? I would guess you were most impressed and said to those gathered, ‘What an amazing event! This is one always to be remembered!”

Imagine that’s the kind of feast the King put on for his son, as we heard in today’s Gos-pel and that’s the kind of feast, times 10, that the Lord has ready for us! And while it’s true that EVERYONE is invited to enter the kingdom of heaven, as Jesus teaches in this parable, we are reminded that “the gate is narrow and the road is difficult and few find it” [Matthew 7:13-14].

The guest in today’s parable represents those who have failed to understand this funda-mental teaching. The guest has taken up the king’s generous invitation, but by failing to dress appropriately (even though, we must assume, he could have), he has demonstrated an overly cas-ual attitude, treating the event as if it were simply a matter of “come as you are,” an insult to the generosity of the king. The kingdom of God, the parable reminds us, is not something we should take for granted.

Check out the WELCOME to our Parish for Permanent Deacon Candidate Mike Mucic and his wife Carolyn . Deacon Candidate Mike has joined our

Parish Family as a candidate for the Permanent Diaconate. He is currently in his second year of education and is assigned to us in training and joining us in the many educational and spiritual components of parish life. You will see him at Faith Formation on Monday evenings, TMIY on Wednesday morning and the Men’s Group on Thursday evenings, the Return Series, as well as a Lector at weekend Mass. Mike has a great spirit and great interest in learning about life in the parish and we are glad to have him with us, as well as Carolyn. WELCOME Mike and Carolyn!

THIS WEEKEND we welcome our Sacramental

Preparation Candidates for First Sacraments (2nd Grad-ers) and Confirmation (8th Graders) at the 9:30am Sun-day Mass, physically distanced, of course. The 2nd Grad-ers will have their first session in the Fr. Garrity Center after Mass and the Confirmation Candidates will meet later on in the day for their first session as well.

First Reconciliation will be celebrated on December 19th 2020.

First Communion will be celebrated on May 2nd 2021.

Confirmation will be celebrated on May 22nd, 2021.

As a faith family, let us unite our prayers for them as they faithfully continue their faith jour-ney!

Yes, the Rectory, Office and Garage Roofs are finally DONE! With the warm and dry weather, West Side Roofing was able to COMPLETE the project this past week! They are such a wonderful company to work with and am grateful for their attention to detail in completing the project! Now, as I have said be-fore, the final payment!

THANK YOU for your generosity in the Sunday Collection. Be Blessed in all you do!

Fr. John

Greetings to the people of St. Mary Church

My name is Mike Mucic. I am a parishioner at St. Mary of the Falls and on August 18, 2019 I was accept-

ed into Candidacy for the Diaconate Formation Program of the Cleveland Diocese after completing a year of

Aspirancy. Part of the formation process requires that I participate

in four years of Field Education. This school year I was lucky to

have been assigned to St. Mary Berea for my second year in this

aspect.

I grew up in Parma Heights and after graduating from Valley

Forge High School I enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After serving 4

years in the Navy, I met and married my wife Carolyn. We

raised two children as I spent the next 26 years as an Air Traffic

Controller in Oberlin, Ohio. I retired in June 2014.

This was partially due to a feeling that God was calling me for

something new. During that first year of retirement a lot of time

was spent in prayer listening for His voice. The next few years

found the two of us participating in numerous ministries—TMIY,

Knights of Columbus, KAIROS Prison Ministry, EDGE, Homebound Eucharist and Choir. The call still continued

and was drawing me towards a vocation to the diaconate. I was hesitant about such a seemingly large decision.

Upon talking to my pastor, I felt great joy and relief as I opened up my heart to the possibility of ordained life.

Please pray for my wife and me as we continue down this new path in our lives together. We will be

praying for all the great people here at St. Mary and look forward to meeting you soon.

Welcome Mike and Carolyn to our faith family, but we already know and love you! Now, as a Perma-

nent Deacon Candidate, we look forward to being with you, Mike to strengthen your commitment to service in

the Diocese of Cleveland and with you, Carolyn, as you are one with us in faith and love!

Music Ministry & Liturgy Notes By Angela Kovic, Director of Music and Liturgy

FOUNDATION OF THE ROSARY

Thank you for the hymn suggestions that you’ve sent in for my next mini-concert! Remember that you aren’t limited just to hymns from our hymnal; I will consider any hymn or sacred song! I will try to include as many as I can. As you might already know, October is one of two months that we dedicate to Mary! This month specifically cele-brates the Most Holy Rosary, due to October 7 being the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. This feast day was initiated by Pope Pius V to honor Mary’s intercession with the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. The rosary was prayed constantly in support of the Christian naval forces, and in the end they were able to defeat their enemies from the Ottoman Empire.

According to the legend, the prayer of the rosary itself also came about due to civil unrest between Christians and here-tics. Somewhere around 1200 in southern France, our Mother Mary brought the Rosary to St. Dominic, who was fighting against the Albigensians, who supported a movement of Catharism through their people. Mary passed along the prayer as a weapon of intercession, and devotion to this repetitive plea has been a source of great strength for many throughout time!

The king in today’s gospel sent wedding invitations to all his close friends… people like himself. But the par-ty wasn’t successful until he opened the doors to eve-ryone… to people not like himself. The Christian fam-ily opens its heart and doors to everyone because we know that joy happens through sharing with others beyond our own family. Charity begins and extends beyond home and truly sets an inclusive spirits.

Our Kindergarten class has been busy learning how to pro-gram the Dash robots with the Path Program. Students were able to draw a path on the ipad and the robot then drove ac-cording to that path. The students practiced making paths in the shape of letters and 2D shapes. Soon they will be learning to record a sound bite for the robot to say.

World Mission Sunday is Next Week!

Next week is World Mission Sunday. We are called

through our Baptism to be part of the Church’s mis-

sionary efforts, through prayer, self-sacrifice, and

support of the Mission Church through material aid.

This year, Pope Francis asks us to respond to that

call, saying, “Here I Am, Send Me!” To “send” our-

selves, we can: PRAY for the Church’s worldwide
