PASTOR’S NOTEBOOK – AUGUST 17, 2014 – TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Jesus Christ,

It is an early Monday morning as I write this. The sky is just beginning to lighten and the air is warm. I am finishing up my packing and getting ready to leave on vacation until the 29th. As I prayed this morning, Jesus brought you close to my heart, reminding me once again how dear you have become to me. As I say so often, “I am blessed!”

This weekend exemplified that so clearly. Saturday morning I had the privilege of being with about 30 folks whose names were offered for leadership on our Councils and Commissions for the Parish. It was a time of introductions, information, and then prayerful discernment. I was so moved by the level of commitment and caring shared by all present. I felt deeply the presence of the Holy Spirit and knew that we would be in good hands.

I want to thank all those who participated in the discernment process and for those whose names were offered and were not able to be present. Once all have been notified this week, I’ll let you know who our new members are. Thank you for your generosity in serving.

Sunday, after morning Masses Downtown, I went to the Westside Chapel to be with our Vietnamese community as they celebrated Our Lady of Lavang and anticipated the Feast of the Assumption. What a beautiful celebration! They have such a love of the Blessed Mother and also a sense of beauty expressed in procession, prayer, song and dance. As we carried the image of Our Lady of Lavang out the doors and around the path of the Stations of the Cross, we prayed the rosary and sang. A group of very young children would stop from time to time and sprinkle flower petals on the ground in honor of our Lady. Once we returned inside for Mass, their combined choirs filled the space with prayerful song and praise.

Of course, a celebration with them would not be complete without food – lots of delicious food and music. If you have never had the opportunity to share liturgy with our Vietnamese community, please treat yourself to a taste of the universal Church. You may not understand the language but you will understand the Mass, our universal prayer of praise to God.

As I ready to leave, I want to thank the staff who will be continuing to serve you while I am away. I am grateful for their dedication to service and for their love of God and for all of you. Please take a moment in the coming weeks to send an email, a note, or drop by and pay a visit just to say “thank you.” It will mean a great deal to them.

May God bless you and keep you. As we visit a number of churches in Germany, know that I will be praying for you.

STEWARDSHIP A Stewardship Reflection on Today’s Readings

The readings on this Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time have a lot to do with “Gentiles.” If most of us were asked to define what a Gentile is, we might say “someone who is not Jewish.” In fact, that is what has evolved as a modern definition; that venerable Web-ster’s New Collegiate Dictionary defines Gentile as “relating to the nations at large, as distinguished from the Jews.” However, as we have often found when we carefully research and review Holy Scripture, that definition is not necessarily supported by the Bible. In Hebrew the word found in the Bible is goy or its plural goyim. These words appear more than 500 times in the Old Testa-ment itself. Yet, not once are they translated to mean “non-Jew.” Only thirty of those times goy or goyim are translated as “Gentile.” More than 300 times they are translated as “nation.” Thus, we are Gentiles not because we are not of the Jewish faith but because we represent a nation other than Israel. This distinction is important to note in relation to today’s readings.

The first reading from the prophet Isaiah lays out God’s view of His Church. God speaks of the Temple, but He insists that “my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” At Jesus’ time only Jews could enter the temple. Any others who might wish to pray had to pray outside the church. That is why businesses developed there to cater to those who could not enter the temple. It was that activity to which Jesus reacted with annoyance to the money changers and merchants.

In this reading God explains to us that we are to “do what is just.” Of course, this is an appeal to us to be good stewards. The good steward, you see, responds to God out of faith, not because God has already offered a reward for that faith. In today’s reading Saint Paul calls himself the “Apostle to the Gentiles.” Most of Paul’s letters and most of the New Testament were written in Greek. In the original Greek, Saint Paul says he is the Apostle to the Ethnos. Although translated as “Gentile” Ethnos in Greek means “nation.” We hear in the first reading that God wants His House to be “for all peoples.” In the last verses of Paul’s letter to the Romans today, Paul says that “God delivered all to disobedience, that He might show mercy to all.” Paul expands the perception from the first reading that the House of God is for everyone to make sure we understand that salvation is offered to all as well.

The Gospel places Jesus in Tyre and Sidon, which is north of Galilee on the coast. It is in an area which in ancient times was known as Phoenicia. Phoenicia and Canaan were somewhat synonymous. Jesus is approached by a local woman, a Canaanite or Phoenici-an, who was definitely from another “nation.” Although her request is initially rebuffed, she calls out, “Lord, help me.” That is not much different from Peter’s call in last week’s Gospel, “Lord, save me.” Not only does this passage support what is offered in terms of the first two readings relating to the Church and salvation being available to all peoples, all nations, it also provides the key to salvation — faith. How often in Scripture does Jesus respond to those who have faith? Always. The Lord is prepared every day and every minute to respond to our needs, to help us with our burdens. However, we must have faith, and we must reach out as the Canaanite woman did. - Reprinted from www.thecatholicsteward.com

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION

With summer in full swing and the days often heating up, our commitment levels seem to continue to go down. It’s understandable that we want to spend time away with family and friends, taking advantage of great weather. But keeping a commitment is important, too. Something more is happening here, not just the warmth of summer. For months we’ve noticed a continual decline in liturgical minis-ters showing up for their chosen times, or showing up too late to serve.

It is a natural consequence – if we do not have enough communion ministers, we cannot distribute the Precious Blood. So that is what will happen this summer. Fifteen minutes before Mass, if we do not have enough extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, we will not go in search of ministers but instead remove cups. We will have one cup for those who cannot receive the host due to gluten intolerance.

Maybe fasting from the Precious Blood will make us eager for its return – so that we crave it and will do anything to keep this great privilege. Perhaps a fast will make us each see more clearly that we are all members of one body and must be responsible to each other. Perhaps a fuller, richer participation in Eucharist for you is to become a dedicated liturgical minister of some kind. Maybe it’s your “Just One”. If you are already in ministry maybe it is time to reflect on service versus convenience. Belonging in this way—by serving one another—is the key to a deeper belief.

ARTISANS NEEDED! For Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS)

What: Step into the prepared Atrium environment and you’re immediately struck by its order and natural beauty. This is perhaps the most highly considered element in the CGS ministry when we prepare to receive God’s word together with children.

In order to maintain our high standards of beauty, we seek interested individuals who are skilled at woodworking, painting, sculpting, and calligraphy to aid in the creation of specific works to be used by the children of our ministry. This may include building small wooden “environments” (very basic model-sized structures with walls and doorways) with detailed building plans provided. Or, perhaps you may be willing to offer your skills at sculpting, carving, or sewing small figures. Additionally, there is a need for a skilled hand to paint figures that have already been made.

When: Anytime – timelines are flexible!

Where: Complete projects at home, then deliver to the Parish

Time Required: Dependent on project

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

What a wonderful and productive week we had for construction of the covered play area! Installation of the asphalt has been completed along with all the major structural elements of the project.
