Beloved Saint Michael Parishioners,This Sunday is my final Sunday with you as your Parochial Vicar. As you have surely heard by now, I will move to Bellingham and begin laboring in the vine-yard at Western Washington University Newman Center and Sacred Heart Parish. I write this to you as I cele-brate my two-year ordination anniversary as a Priest of Jesus Christ, June 25, 2018. Two years ago I was ordained a priest. A week later, I arrived at Saint Michael parish as your newly-minted “baby priest." Truth be told, I have found it difficult to write this “farewell,” which is proof that I’m still in the beginning stages of grief – denial. It may be easier for me to just not think about the impact that you have on me and my priesthood because I weep with sheer and profound gratitude to you all – parish-ioners, staff, and above all, Fr. Jim. As you heard me say at my final Mass, when I reflect on my time here at SMP it would be easy to coin the term that Fr. Jim is famous for as simply “Blessed.” But for me even that doesn’t quite describe

it. Rather, I am convinced that my time here at Saint Michael Parish has been “Beyond Blessed” in terms of recog-nizing the blessings in our midst but also very aware of the hidden blessings that will manifest themselves perhaps after I go to glory. When I think about when I first found out that I was coming to SMP how amazed and delighted I was with opportunity to come back to SMP after working here 12 years ago in Youth Ministry, and finally arriving at the parish, no longer as “Cody” the youth minister… but Fr. Cody (or, as some like to call me, “Fr. Ross the Boss.”)All of my “firsts” have been with you: my first Masses where I was still learning the ropes; my very first time in a confessional as a priest – definitely more scared than the penitents; my very first sick call in the middle of the night surrounded by lovely and kind SMP parishioners; my first Christmas, Holy Week and Easter; my first Faithraising Campaign, etc..I know that I’m not your first Parochial Vicar and I won’t be your last. But all of my firsts as a priest have been with YOU. You don’t forget your firsts and so I won’t forget you. I will forever take you to wherever God calls me – to Bellingham and beyond. Thank you for being patient with me. Thank you for teach-ing me. But above all, thank you for loving me into who I am today. I am “Beyond Blessed.”

Hopefully I have done my small and humble part in pre-paring the way of the Lord. Let us keep one another in prayer! In Christ, I love you! Fr. Cody

My name is Marisa Schroff and my family and I have been members of Saint Michael Parish for the last 3 ½ years, since we moved from the east coast. From the very first Mass that I attended here, I have felt an overwhelming sense of com-munity, a spiritual home that drew me ever closer into God’s loving arms. Experiencing this vibrant parish made me long to get involved in a deeper way, where I could add to this com-munity and serve, because I felt like the parish was serving my family in so many ways. I have volunteered in the parish in var-ious ministries but at the moment I am serving as an aide for the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program, which is part of Faith Formation, and in Food Tidings, also known as Meals for Moms/Food for Fathers, which is a ministry that provides and delivers meals to those who are in need of assistance; the sick, families who have just had a baby and to our priests. When we first joined the parish I didn’t feel like I had much to offer. My life felt full, and overwhelming with young children, and I thought perhaps I could just wait a few more years until life calmed down and I had hours of ‘free time’ to give back. But inevitably the Holy Spirit kept tugging at my heart and I knew I needed to be an active member of this wonderful community now, even when life felt full. So I began by doing Food Tidings. I was already making dinner for my family so why not double the meal and sign up to take the second por-tion to another parishioner in need. That small act of making a meal out of love for my neighbor helped me to recognize that I could make time for ministry and live out my discipleship in the fullness of life, not just after the storm had passed. Being engaged in this initial ministry helped me to also choose to

become involved in Catechesis of the Good Shepard. My chil-dren started to attend this amazing program three years ago and as I began to see the fruits of this faith formation seep into my children in ways that I don’t have time to talk about right now, I couldn’t help but offer my assistance to help the littlest of our parishioners experience our great faith. I realized that by choosing to take one small step into ministry I could spread the Gospel; because my faith is not meant to be lived in a vacuum, it is co-dependent on this church community. We are all called to be Christ for one another, to serve without ceasing, even through our own stormy lives. Let us all consider how we are investing in our spiritual home and giving back to this incredibly special parish.

HIGH SCHOOLERS(Incoming freshmen through graduating seniors) Join us for an amazing weekend at Steubenville NW, July 27–29 and allow God to REVEAL himself to you through fel-lowship, awesome talks and, most importantly, the Eucharist!Registration is now open. Forms are available at the office and online at the parish website.

WHAT IS F.A.I.T.H.? This is our Faith Formation program for the whole family! We begin in October and continue through May each year. As a family you attend the 9:30am Mass then join in fellowship with other parish families at a continental breakfast in the school gym. At 11:15am, the adults are dismissed to attend a parent session just for them and the children join small groups led by faithful catechists. We are currently offering sessions for children ages Pre-K through 5th grade. Registrations are on our parish website or at the parish office. All are welcome!

Contact Ann Ashe with questions at (360) 292-7112 or [email protected]

Comments from FAITH Parents: "This year was so helpful for me to grow in faith and increase my own understanding".

"It was helpful to be discussing the same content as my child."

"Coming together with other parish families was good for us; we met three new families through FAITH"

STEUBENVILLE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!Steubenville NW is a Catholic conference for teens from all around the Pacific NW. Every year 1200 teens gather in Spokane to grow in faith and encounter Jesus through the guidance of national Catholic speakers and musicians. Serving that many teens requires 50-70 vol-unteers. Historically, 70% of those volunteers have had a connection to Saint Michael Parish! We still need many more volunteers. The conference is July 27-29. We can coordinate rides and car pools. Cost for meals and lodging is $75 or whatever you can afford. Contact Jessi Oakland at [email protected] if you are interested or have any questions.

CRS RICE BOWL GRANTSDuring the Lenten Season this year, the community of Saint Michael Parish collected $10,480 to donate to Catholic Relief Services in support of humanitarian programs around the world. 25% of donations collected by CRS are distributed locally within our diocese as well. We are blessed to report that Saint Michael Parish has been rewarded two grants for parish and local ministries – $450 for The Community Kitchen (operated by Catholic Community Services) and $450 for The Youth Migrant Project (YMP). Thank you for your generous and faithful giving, which is at the heart of stewardship.

Matrimony at Saint Michael Parish"Those who marry in Christ are able, with faith in the Word of God, to cele-brate fruitfully the mystery of the union of Christ and the Church, to live it rightly, and to bear witness to it publicly." – Order of Celebrating Matrimony, 11 Are you or someone you know dis-cerning a call to the sacrament of Marriage? Would you like more infor-mation about preparing to celebrate your wedding in the Catholic Church?

Please contact Andrew Casad, Steward for Matrimony, at (360) 292-7127 or [email protected], this week, let us all pray together for those preparing for Holy Matrimony: Lord, strengthen the hearts of those men and women whom you have called to the Sacrament of Marriage that they may come happily to celebrate their union with one another as a foretaste of their union with you.

Help us with a short survey!Saint Michael Parish has a rich tradition of music, heightened by our full participa-tion in singing and praying together. Our music ministry is currently evaluating the tools we use for worship (i.e. worship aids, lyrics on screens, and Breaking Bread hymnals) and we want your feedback!Help us by answering three short questions, and emailing your responses to Andrew Goldstein at [email protected], or call (360) 292-7140.(1) When do you feel most inspired to sing at mass?(2) What resources do you feel are important to have in the pew (i.e. readings, sheet music, order of the Mass, etc.)(3) What Mass time did you most regularly attend prior to the start of the renovation? Please send your feedback by July 5!

GOD'S PLAN IN THE EUCHARIST"The Lamb of God," "The Bread of Life," "The Body and the Blood of Christ"... these are phrases we know from the Mass. But do we understand what they mean in the greater and deeper context of Scripture and Church teaching? Discover firsthand how Christ's Body and Blood are an integral and won-drous part of God's plan for our salvation In Lectio: Eucharist, an Augustine Institute Studios original production. Acclaimed author and teacher Dr. Brant Pitre explores the biblical roots of the Eucharist, through its foreshadowing in the miraculous events of the Old Testament, the Gospels, and Apostolic teaching. Watch it today on FORMED!

Dear Saint Michael Parishioners,As we head into the summer, I would like to draw your attention towards an extraordinary opportunity for fam-ilies of children aged 5 years old by August 31, 2018. This upcoming school year, our two Kindergarten classes will have smaller class sizes than in previous years. Our projected class sizes present an extremely special opportunity for your children to receive an out-standing Kindergarten education at your parish school with an excellent student to teacher ratio. If your child is already enrolled at another school, please consider the life-long benefit he or she would receive by building their academic and spiritual foundation in our Kindergarten program. Please call the school office at (360) 754-5131 or contact us through our website, stmikesolympia.org, for more information.Blessings,Connor Geraghty Principal

THE SMALL GROUP DIFFERENCEIt’s summertime, but don’t let your faith take a vacation! Many small groups continue to meet throughout the summer. Here is an example of what one of our Small Groups is doing:"The Westside Small Group has only been in existence since Lenten season 2017 but has grown in faith as well as friend-ship. We are a small group of eight, with an occasional guest of our members, so the discussions are lively, thoughtful, and deeply spiritual. Even though our commitment is for Lent and Advent, our group has found a warm fellowship with one another that has drawn us to meet weekly throughout the year. This past week we celebrated with an Irish theme since a member was traveling to Ireland. The group blessed her trip with prayer, Irish soda bread, corned beef and cabbage--and a bottle of wine (or two!). We look forward each week to sharing the Word, seeing one other, feasting on wonderful shared delicacies and enjoying a little "fruit of the vine". This new circle of friends has been a rich blessing to me in my faith life as well as for my personal well being. I am grateful to St. Mike's for encouraging Small Group participation."

    – Mary Jo, Westside Small Group Facilitator

If you are not in a small group yet, some groups are open to receiving new members at any time. Check out the open groups on our website. Contact Michaela Moreau at [email protected].
