From the Pastor’s Desk….
“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself,
take up his cross, and follow me” (Mt. 16:24)
Today, the Holy Mother Church, realizing the difficulties and obstacles we encounter daily in our efforts
to respond fully and positively to our Christian call, encourages us to rise above internal and external ob-
stacles and offer ourselves totally to Christ our Savior, who himself resisted all kinds of obstacles and
hindrances in order to save us.
In the first reading, the prophet Jeremiah (Jer 9:1) tells us that nothing can prevent the word of God from
being proclaimed, not even our own reluctance or resistance. Jeremiah was a very timid young man who
did not know how to speak (Jer1:4,17). God called him anyway and assured him of his divine support.
Jeremiah could not understand why he was suffering and was being rejected by everyone. He was under
the assumption that if we do God’s will, we will be healthy, wealthy, and loved by all. But that’s not al-
ways true. Sometimes, faithfulness to God brings sufferings, trials and disappointments in our lives. God
allows us to experience pains and trials. In spite of all these sufferings, we are assured that God blesses us
and shields us.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaims unambiguously that his mission as the Messiah includes suffering and
death. He rebuked Peter in the strongest words ever attributed to him. “Get behind me Satan! You are an
obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do” (Mt16:23). Jesus made it
clear to Peter that to avoid suffering and hardship in order to opt for the easy and safe course is purely hu-
man thinking. Authentic discipleship involves taking on the cross and “denying oneself”, which means
disowning ourselves as the center of our own existence and realizing that only God is the object and
purpose of our lives.
St. Nicholas of Tolentine Catholic Academy reopens this Wednesday. There will be a school Mass
on Friday at 8:45 AM in the Church. We look forward to the students’ return after the summer break.
May this be another year of joy in learning as well as growth in their relationship with God!
Our Parish Feast Day-September 10, 2017- All are Welcome!
Finally, as summer vacation season comes to an end and we are back to work, I hope you had some time
to relax and refresh yourselves. The regular Mass Schedule will resume next Sunday. Our Parish will
celebrate the Feast of our Patron, St. Nicholas of Tolentine, on Sunday, September 10th at the
12:15PM Mass. This year, we are celebrating the 100th Anniversary of our Parish. I encourage every member of our St. Nick’s Family to be part of this joyful celebration and bring honor and greater glory to
God for the gift of this awesome Church of St. Nicholas of Tolentine.
God bless you!
