MARCH 6, 2016 4

From the Pastor’s Desk…

On this forth Sunday of Lent the Church encourages us to: “Rejoice and be

joyful,” because Christ is willing to reconcile us to his Father. So, on this joy-

ful Sunday (Laetare), she invites us to be reconciled with God and our broth-

ers and sisters. St. Paul tells us in today’s second reading, that we are

“products of Christ’s reconciliation”.

Today we hear once again one of the most beautiful parables of Jesus from the

fifteenth chapter of the Gospel of Luke-the parable of the Prodigal Son. Jesus

reassures us of God’s readiness to reconcile with us. This is the story of a lov-

ing father and repented son. It is the story of reconciliation at its best.

When the prodigal son came to his senses, he realized that he was in the

wrong place and he had to do something to move from there. We must humbly

rediscover our self and say like the prodigal son and begin our journey toward

God our compassionate Father who is waiting for us.

Pope Francis reminds us that “When we sin, God recognizes that this is the

choice his people have made, he intervenes and tells them they have taken the

wrong path, adding that God “never disowns us.” In fact he leads the sinner

to open themselves to conversion and forgiveness, “this is the path of divine

mercy,” the Pope explained.

Reconciliation Monday March 21, 2016 from 3-9pm There are many opportunities available in our parish to celebrate the Sacra-

ment of Reconciliation. This sacrament is a blessing to all of us because it

mediates God’s grace to us. The sacrament of reconciliation has double edges:

Reconciliation with God and reconciliation with our brothers and sister. One

leads to the other. Our reconciliation with God is strongly dependent on our

reconciliation with one another. Don’t forget the special opportunity on Mon-

day, March 21st 2016 from 3-9pm. when the sacrament is available in all the

Catholic Churches of the Diocese of Brooklyn along with other dioceses.

A Lenten Parish Mission During the year of Mercy we had at St. Nick’s. “A people of Mercy- A Path-

way Through Lent, A parish Mission.” We were happy to see a good num-

ber of parishioners participated in this Parish Mission for three days. We thank

Fr. Senan Taylor, OFM. Cap., and Sister Karen Cavanagh, CSJ for help-

ing us to experience the Mercy of God during this Jubilee year of Mercy.

Their inspirational talks and their spiritual exercises encouraged many of us to

walk on the road of Mercy where at the end of the road our loving Father is

waiting for us. We pray for them that they may continue to lead many prodigal

sons and daughters to the merciful Father.

God bless you,

Fr. John Francis
