ST. PATRICK PARISH PICNIC

The Knights of Columbus would like to thank everyone for

making this year’s picnic one we will always cherish. The

outdoor mass was a hit, with Fr. Arturo mentioning that he

would like to do it again. A special thank-you to the Hispanic

Prayer Group and Heriberto Aguilar for the beautiful

decorations on the altar, especially with the addition of the

cross. The Pastoral and Finance Councils did a fabulous job

helping with the mass as Eucharistic Ministers and

Ushers. The music, led by Mary Jean Sheveland and

accompanied by others from the 8:30 and 11:00 masses, was

beautiful. This was the first year where different Ministries

oversaw different activities, taking pressure off the Knights of

Columbus to find volunteers and run all the activities. A

special thanks for Apóstoles de la palabra for grilling hot

dogs, the Food Bank for cutting up watermelons, Altar Servers

and Hispanic Choir for serving Pizza and hot dogs in the Kids

area, the Middle & High School kids for the great job

managing drinks; with a special touch of their cultural drinks,

the Women’s Group for helping out with the snow cones and

managing the serving lines, and lastly the Knights of

Columbus in preparing and serving the chicken and running

the different activities like Bingo, Coin/candy dash and

balloon toss. A special thanks to the Parish staff and Nancy

Patton for running the booths to help our Parish grow

Spiritually and stay informed on what’s happening with our

Ministries. Lastly, the crew to set up and tear down the

complex did an unbelievable job, starting at 6:00a.m.

Our prayers were answered with the drizzle holding off until

cleanup was complete. Thanks again from Ricardo

Hernandez, Paul Crawford and Duane Kloser, your Picnic

coordinators. We couldn’t have done it without everyone's

help.

REFLECTING ON THE GOSPEL

Today, we return to the Gospel of Mark after a five-week

trip through John 6. In some ways Mark may seem to be

familiar territory after the theological digression through

the bread of life discourse and its antecedents. There are

some explanatory notes in the gospel today that seem

intended for a non-Jewish audience. Mark tells us about

some Jewish practices of the time that would have been

unfamiliar to the readers of his gospel. For this reason

among others the audience would have been sizably, if

not majority, Gentile. So quickly after Jesus’ death and

resurrection the gospel message

moved beyond the Jewish soil where

it first took root, and grew among

Gentiles. It’s almost like a cultivated

ivy that leaped over a natural

boundary to take root beyond the

garden.

With this gospel reading it is as

though we are listening in to one side

of a family feud. We hear the early

Christians” take on their elder

sibling’s faith. Not surprisingly, the

Christians were critical of Jewish

practices, claiming they missed the point. But it would be

a misreading to see this only as a history lesson. The

practices criticized in this gospel are perilously close to

those of any religious person. There is a strong temptation

to believe that we, by our actions and good deeds, make

ourselves worthy of God. It can be easy to focus on the

externals of religious practice and miss the point of

religion. It can be easy to focus on ritual washing, or any

ritual, and miss the deeper, more meaningful action that

the ritual points to.

We can imagine attending a birthday party with the

focus on what kind and flavor of cake and ice cream,

when the “Happy Birthday” song is sung, how it is sung,

who sings it, whether there is a birthday wish, whether the

wish was “voiced” thereby nullifying it, or kept to the

wisher thereby guaranteeing its fruition, and many other

details of the event. All of the focus on the external ritual

of the birthday can cause us to forget that this is a

celebration of life for the one whose birthday it is. The

party with its attendant rituals should not pull us away

from the celebration of the individual.

The early Christians criticized those who would

misplace the emphasis on the externals. Their admonition

is not for their theological opponents only. It’s also for us. Living Liturgy—year B

FR. ARTURO’S PILGRIMAGE TO “EL CAMINO DE

SANTIAGO,” SPAIN

El Camino de Santiago, in English “The Way of Saint James,” is the

pilgrimage to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern

Spain, where the remains of Jesus’s apostle Saint James the Elder lie. The

Camino has existed as a Christian pilgrimage for well over 1,000 years, and

there is evidence of a pre-Christian route as well. UNESCO declared the

trail a World Heritage Site; the European Union named the Camino its first

European Cultural Route in 1987.

The Camino is for those seeking spiritual discovery or release. It is also

for spiritual healing and forgiveness. There are many ways to do the

Camino. Some pilgrims complete the trail in as few as 20 days, most walk it

in four to six weeks. Along the way there are some budget-friendly

accommodations every five miles. The albergues (pilgrim hostels) provide

basic lodging, including access to showers and run by volunteers who care

for the pilgrims. To stay at them, you need a credential (pilgrim passport) to

get a stamp and show it at the end of your pilgrimage to get your certificate.

The path also passes near restaurants, so it is not necessary to carry food or

water.

My plan is to walk 150 miles from a Oia (borderline of Portugal) to

Santiago de Compostela in Spain from September 10-21, 2018. I can take

some prayer requests and personal intentions with me, you can put them in

an envelope and bring it to the parish office or give it to me. Please keep me

in your prayers. Fr. Arturo, Pastor.

AWARDS FOR PREVIOUS MONTH

Knight of the Month – Tony Davis Tony was nominated for Knight of the Month for the great job he did

calling Bingo at the Canby Independence Day celebration. Tony added a lot

of humor while calling bingo numbers to make this a fun event for the

community. Great job Tony.

Family of the month – Robert & Dawna Hitch Robert & Dawna were selected for Family of the Month for the great job

they did organizing the 2018 Parish Camp Out at the Oddfellows

campground in Florence Oregon. They worked with the camp host to

reserve the facility equipment for dinners and the individual campsite

logistics for our guests. During the day and evening, they opened their camp

site to fellow parishioners to socialize. They hosted Fr. Arturo's sleep

arrangement for Friday evening and did a fabulous job welcoming everyone

to the camp ground. They also provided 4-wheelers for riding on the dunes.

Lady of the Month - Connie Bilton Smith Connie was selected Lady of the Month for her help with this year’s

Vacation Bible School. She was instrumental in helping with the

decorations in preparation for this year’s event. In the past, she served

many years as the Director of Religious Education and now as a Eucharistic

Minister at St. Patrick’s Church. She is very involved with the Annual

Ladies Tea celebration and is very active with the Ladies Group at St.

Patrick’s. Connie works with the Canby Senior Center, decorating the

windows for upcoming events. She has 4 children, 13 grandchildren and 4

great grandchildren. Great job Connie.
