Pastor’s Corner Humans are marvelous physical/spiritual beings. The revelation of one’s character, faith and belief often come to the fore in the midst of a crisis. Since the beginning of 2020, God’s people have

suffered a “crisis” of the worst sort. A terrible runaway virus. It has resulted in misinformation and financial, social, spiritual, and political upheaval. Knee-jerk reactions abound. Grace has been driven away. This “scourge” has created an environment of fear, isolation, frustration, anger, cynicism, doubt, rash words, and confusion. The aforementioned are the circumstances too many have “given into” and upon which I reflect on this Feast of the Holy Family.

The reality is: crisis followed Mary, Joseph, and Jesus from the outset. Theirs was never the idyllic situation our Christmas cards suggest. Yet, their connection with God’s grace was never severed. Threatened, but never severed. Mary’s “yes” to God was motivated by her love for all of us. Joseph followed the instruction of God via dreams and angels. He was motivated by fierce loyalty and protection of his wife and child. Jesus was born in the most primitive of conditions: a Palestinian manger. They fled as a maniacal king slaughtered hundreds of babies in his quest to destroy Jesus. They fled across a desert filled with predators to a culture and language foreign to their own. There were no synagogues, temple, priests, rabbis, family, or community to surround them. They had no home or livelihood. They had only the clothes on their back and little food. Yet, they were never estranged from God. They made the equally dangerous return journey home and settled NOT in Bethlehem but Nazareth. A village with no walls and subject to desert marauders. And it was from this family the Savior of the world was born and grew in age and grace. How was this possible? God’s grace made it possible. A grace that was never pushed away.

Through the ages, the family unit has always been surrounded by circumstances that threaten cohesion and harmony. Yet, we have before us a wonderful example of how to deal with this disruptive world as a family. They did not give in to paralyzing fear, complaints, cursing, or despair — which would have, under those horrific circumstances, been perfectly understandable.

May the example and life of the Holy Family inspire you. Keep God’s grace in your family environs. Keep constant connection with God. Do not force God or religion on your children. Lead by Christ-like example. Remember, the Good Shepherd walks in front of the sheep and NEVER drives them. Never allow God’s loving grace to be driven from your homes. When prayer, tolerance, patience, initiative, encouragement, kindness, understanding, compassion are present and practiced — there lies the Grace of God.

Mary, Joseph and Jesus protect us.

Scouting in the Catholic Church and Family Scouting has many resources available to assist families. For example, the “Light of Christ” and “Parvuli Dei” family programs can be very valuable in strengthening faith and the love of Jesus in your home as parents guide their children, ages 6-10, in completing activity books. These items are available at the Council store at 4000 Modoc Rd., or online at scoutshop.org.

Additionally, interested youth and adults will find fun and easy ways to learn more about their faith, Catholic role models and cultures around the world through The Five Series of Religious Activities and two International Activities. The Five Series of Religious Activities include: Rosary Series, Marian Series, American Saint Series, Modern Saint Series and Faith Series. The International Activities include International Awareness and Blessed Are Merciful - Keep The Lamp Burning Activities.

All youth and adults—Scouts or non-Scouts, Catholic or non-Catholic, male or female—are welcome to participate in the Religious Activities provided by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting®. All of these activities may be used by groups, families, schools, or any Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Venturer, Girl Scout, American Heritage Girl, or Campfire USA.

    Leading Teens Closer to Christ

Protecting Our Children Talk to teens about posting photos. The pictures we share on Instagram and other social media can reveal much more information than just the picture we want our followers to see. If your teens are on social media, talk to them about the dangers of posting photos with potentially identifying information — posing in front of their schools or cars, tagging their location, or providing other clues that would give a predator easy access. Consider having a family screening contract, where parents approve photos before children can post. From The Principal’s Desk

Dear St. Raphael School Families and Friends,

Prophecy has been fulfilled and the long-awaited Messiah has come! Joy is the mood of all earnest seekers. Jesus came to give sight to the blind and life to the dead. Christ's reign is among us through our deeds of love and generosity. Let us not grow weary, but steady our hearts and rejoice, for the Lord is close at hand! We shall rejoice!

Please know that if your family travels during the holidays, there is a mandated 14-day quarantine. This is not a suggested quarantine but a mandate. Again, please be considerate of our school community. Our staff has worked long and hard, and in some cases, at great personal sacrifice to keep our school open and safe. We ask and expect that each family help us to keep our doors open.
