FROM MY HOUSE
TO YOURS
Dear Parishioners,
Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?
Jesus is asked in today’s gospel. St. Matthew makes it clear
that those who ask this question are interested in one thing
only: how they might entrap Jesus in speech. If Jesus answered
“yes,” he might forfeit his popularity with the masses, who
resented the payment. If he answered “no,” he could be
denounced to the authorities for inciting people to break the
law.
Jesus does not give either of the answers his
questioners were looking for. Jesus’ reply, Repay to Caesar
what belongs to Caesar, rejects the radical position of those
who claimed that the Roman government was unlawful and
should not be obeyed at all. All the emphasis, however, is on
the second part of Jesus’ answer: Pay to God what belongs to
God.
What is God’s anyway? The answer is inescapable:
everything! From God we receive all that we are and have, sin
excepted. God has given us the gift of life, and has preserved
our lives until now in the midst of heaven-knows how many
dangers to life. God has given us our talents: everything from
the five senses, which we share with the animals, to the
uniquely human gifts of thought, speech, love and laughter, to the individual talents that make each person unique. How dull
life would be if we were all the same!
If paying to God what is God’s means anything, it
must mean putting God first in our lives. Are we putting God
first in our lives? Or does he get the leftovers? Our spare time,
if any? The gifts and talents that are left over when we have
finished doing the things we want to do?
Jesus understood, and taught, that we must give God
the first fruits - out of gratitude. This grateful giving a first
fruits was based on the truth that everything comes from God,
and hence everything belongs to God.
If we truly want to “pay to God what is God’s”, we
must put God first in our lives - in all areas of our lives. There
must be no fenced-off areas where he is second or third - or
where God is not allowed to enter at all.
When we put God first in our lives, we make a
beautiful discovery. We find that what is left over for
ourselves is always enough, ultimately more than enough!
We find that God will never be outdone in generosity.
God Love Ya!
Fr. Reilly

All Souls Envelopes
All Souls Mass
A special Mass will be celebrated on November 2nd
, 2017 at 7pm in St. Richard Church for all
of our deceased members of our parish family who have returned home to the Lord, especially
those who have passed this year. We invite you to join us for the Mass and to use the special en-
velope provided in your packet and return it before November 2nd; in order that your loved ones
name may be placed on the altar for this Mass and be remembered during the month of
November.
Mass Intentions ~2018 Mass Book The 2018 Announced Mass Intentions Book will be opened on Monday, October 30, 2017 at 8:30am in the school hall. I, along with my helpers, will begin this process as soon as I arrive after Mass. The procedure will be:
You will come into the hall and receive a number and have a seat and wait until your number is called. You will then come to a table where I will be with envelopes marked with a date and time of each available Mass.
You will tell me your dates and if it is available you will receive the envelope with the month, day, and time already on it. You will then go to another table and fill in the name for whom you wish this Mass and at whose request. There will be helpers to help you with this.
When your envelopes are properly filled in you will turn them in to a helper, along with $10.00 stipend for each Mass. Each person will be permitted 5 Masses.
Two for a weekend (Saturday evening or Sunday) and Three for an 8:00am Mass during the week. This procedure works very well; as it moves along quickly and easily. Take Note that No Individual Mass Intentions
will be scheduled for: Holy Thursday ~ March 29, 2018
Easter Sunday ~ April 1, 2018
Mother’s Day ~ May 13, 2018
Father’s Day ~ June 17, 2018

Today’s Liturgical Summary
The 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 22, 2017 We hear many voices in the scriptures today but none more important than that of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In the Gospel we hear Jesus say “Repay to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's.” This is a strong message to remind us to leave the mundane aspects of our life to the world and the spiritual elements of our lives centered on God!
In the Eucharistic prayer at Mass today we hear Father say “May we be cleansed by the very Mysteries we serve.” We ask in our Gathering Hymn to “Serve you the Lord heart filled with gladness.” as we sing ‘ALL THE EARTH.’
In the Prayer after Communion Father prayers that we may be “Helped by the gifts you've given in this present age and prepared for the gifts that are eternal. We, also, sing in our song during the Presentation the Gifts asking God to 'OPEN OUR EYES' and our ears, and our hearts to His gifts both present and to come. And at the end of the first reading we learn what the prophet Isaiah wrote of God the Father stating “ I am the Lord there is no other!” We also find this thought echoed in the lyrics of our Recessional Hymn ‘FOR YOU ARE MY GOD.’
Pre-Jordan Classes In preparation for Baptism Pre-Jordan classes are held in
St. Richard Church at 12:30pm on the following Sunday dates
October 29th
November 19th December 3rd
The parents of the child are required to attend a Pre-Jordan
class; godparents are also welcome but not required to
attend. Please call the rectory to make arrangements to at-
tend the class. AFTER you have attended the class and
acquired certificates of eligibility for your
godparents, you may then call the rectory to book
the date for the Baptism which are held almost every
Sunday immediately following the 11:30AM Mass.
