Remembering September 11

Today is the 15th Anniversary of the terrorist attacks on our nation. Today’s mass will be in honor of our first respond-ers and a prayer for an end to violence. The best way to honor those who gave their lives to help the victims of the ter-rorist attacks on our nation is to work for an end to violence in our communities and throughout the world. The readings that have been chosen for today’s liturgy reflect God’s will for universal peace. The first reading, from the prophet Mi-cah, tells of a time to come when all nations will come in peace to the mountain of the Lord and will no longer train for war. The Apostle James tells us that earthly wisdom leads to jealousy, strife and vile behavior, while the wisdom from God brings peace and kindness. In the reading from Matthew’s gospel, Jesus tells his disciples to turn the other check. The new commandment he gives requires that we love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us.

Twenty Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the reading from the Book of Exodus, the people have turned aside from the Covenant and made a golden calf to worship. God’s wrath is enkindled against them, but Moses reminds the Lord of his promise to Abraham to bring them into the promised land. The Lord relents and does not punish the people for their sin.

In his First Letter to Timothy, St. Paul gives a personal witness of God’s forgiveness. Because he was the worst of sin-ners, Paul says, God chose him to be his messenger as a sign of his abundant mercy so that all might come to believe in Christ and come to everlasting life.

In the reading from the gospel, Jesus gives three parables of the kingdom of God. In the parable of the lost sheep, the shepherd leaves the ninety-nine, seeks out the one that is lost and brings it home safely. In the parable of the lost coin, the woman searches her house carefully until she finds it. In the parable of the Prodigal Son, his father stands guard waiting for him to return and, when his son is still far off, he rushes out to embrace him. In all three parables there is great rejoicing when that which was lost has been found.

Exodus 32:7-11, 13-14 1 Timothy 1:12-17 Luke 15:1-32

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today’s scriptures give us wonderfully inspiring stories of God’s love and mercy. They remind us that no matter what we have done, or failed to do, no matter how far we may have wandered, God’s love is always faithful and his mercy and grace are available to us all.

Today is the 15th Anniversary of the terrorist attacks on our nation. More than 3,000 people lost their lives. Many more lost a loved one or a friend. Our nation lost its sense of security. Many people lost their faith. And yet, many more responded in faith to bring the comfort of God’s presence to that time of darkness. Many of our first respond-ers —the firemen, police, emergency workers — lost their lives trying to save others. We remember, we honor, we pray for them all. On the occasion of the anniversary, and in light of the increasing violence in our community and around the country, we will have a special mass to remember our first responders and to honor them by a commit-ment to work for an end to all forms of violence.

Prayer calls for transformation. It is out of our prayer that action takes its shape. Those tragic events transformed our nation. But transformation is not always for the good. Many became bitter and angry, feeding on hatred and prejudice. But responding to hatred with hatred, to violence with more violence, is simply to perpetuate the cycle and give justification to the perpetrators. Our faith calls us to respond by bringing healing to those in pain and to work for peace and forgiveness. Anger and hatred destroy one’s own soul. The whole world saw the acts of terror-ism for what they are: unspeakable crimes against humanity. The victims of the tragedy were innocent. We cannot besmirch their innocence by committing the same sin. Forgiveness does not mean to condone acts of evil, to pretend they didn’t happen, to refuse to take appropriate precautions or to refuse to hold the attackers accountable. It does mean that we don’t let their actions destroy our own souls. By bringing Christ’s own sacrifice to life, forgiveness brings the peace that will give the lie to the breeding grounds for hatred.

The gospel parables of the kingdom in this Sunday’s reading remind us that God will go to any lengths to reconcile with his children. The shepherd goes searching after his lost sheep, not waiting for it to return to him. The woman searches for her lost coin, rather than hoping it turns up or simply mourning its loss. The father of the prodigal son runs down the road to embrace his son before the boy speaks his words of repentance. In all three parables, there is a celebration over the return of the lost. Jesus proclaims that there is great rejoicing in heaven over the repentance of every sinner, that we must celebrate and rejoice because that which has been lost has now been found. The kingdom of God is all about mercy and forgiveness. With God, reconciliation brings an end to sin and separation.

The gospel from Matthew for today's mass echoes this theme of reconciliation. Jesus tells us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. Jesus reminds us that God causes the rain to fall on the unjust as well as the just. This mean that all people are God’s children and he is the only one who has the right to judge. He reminds us that there is no merit in only loving those who love us — even sinners and pagans do the same.

So, practically speaking, while we do have the right (and the obligation) to defend our nation, we cannot let fear and hatred rule our hearts or determine our actions. While this is difficult to do, and people of good will can disagree about the best means and policies, we are called to respect the rights and dignity of all people and not simple retali-ate against the guilty. When we can balance this and take on the mind of Jesus, we honor those who have given their lives in service to our nation and local community. There will be a special blessing today for all our first responders.

Thank you to all our volunteers who have gotten our new academic year off to a good start. The School Board and Parents Association have already held their first meetings, we have had a reception for new school families, Meet the Teacher night, the Religious Education Meet and Greet, the first RCIA information session and our First Scrip-ture Study. Coming up this week will be the first meetings for the Sports Association, the Parish Finance Commit-tee, the Parish Pastoral Council, and the first day of class for our Religious Education students. There will be a school mass Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. All are welcome. Next Sunday we will celebrate the Feast of our patron, St. Robert Bellarmine, as well as Catechetical Sunday. Coffee & Donuts will be served after the masses on Sunday morning.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO BE A SPRED VOLUNTEER?

Background and former experience with people with special needs are not expected or required to be a Spred volunteer. First, you are invited to come to an observation to see a Spred session and how each volunteer discov-ers a richer and a more meaningful style of faith development for themselves and for their special friends. If you would then like to join the group, one training session is required and there will be ongoing mentoring in the Spred parish group. An individual with special needs is then partnered on a one to one basis with a volunteer. Our mission is to provide full inclusion in the sacramental and worshiping life of the church for our friends with special needs. St. Robert Bellarmine’s Spred group meets on Wednesday evenings from mid-September to mid-May. We are currently in need of one volunteer for a young man who is on our waiting list. You will see your own faith deepen as you walk your journey of faith with your Spred friend and discover the saving presence of God through reflection on lived experiences. Please consider giving yourself the opportunity to serve in this faith community. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Julie Oloroso at (773) 218-4276 . For more information on SPRED, please visit the website: www.spred-chicago.org.
