• Baptism • We welcome all families with young children. For your first step, you must become a registered, practicing, contributing member of St. Rose of Lima for at least 4 months with proven Mass attendance. Your second step is to contact Kathy in the office, 851-1874, to schedule and get a baptism packet. Be sure you provide all the necessary documents 10 days prior to the baptism class. Baptism class is the 2nd Thursday of every month at 6 PM. Reservations are needed for the class. At least one godparent must be a practicing Catholic. All baptisms are celebrated on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 4th Sunday of each month at 12 noon, after the 10:30 Mass.

• Matrimony • At least one party must be a registered, practicing member of St. Rose with at least 6 months active proven attendance at Mass. After this is accomplished, please call Jane Lucero to make an appointment to begin your 6 month marriage preparation process. Please make no arrangements until after this appointment. SAVORING THE EXPERIENCE One of the wonderful things about vacations is the time we spend two or three weeks afterward savoring the experience, sharing vacation photos and memories with our family and friends. This kind of reflection puts us back in touch with the original experience and reminds us of the relaxation and won-der the vacation afforded us. Today, on the Third Sunday of Easter, the Church blesses us with reminders of what we cele-brated two Sundays ago. All three readings are reflections on the meaning of the death and resurrection of Christ. One of the threads running through these reflections is that the purpose of the Lord’s suffering, death, and resurrection was to save us, to forgive our sins. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION With the Easter season well under way, we now resume our survey of the sacrament of the sick. The pastoral care of the sick will be misunderstood if we start from the vantage point of the sickroom. Begin with the Sunday assembly, from which the sick person has been separated by the crisis of illness, and whose absence is given expression in prayer and service. The goal is to extend the consolation of the Lord’s presence at the table to those who are apart from it, and for the assembly to enfold them in prayer. Secondarily, the goal is to teach people what the Church desires for all those who are sick. Seeing ministers dispatched to the sick from Mass every Sunday might help a caregiver realize that their dear one can also receive Communion. Wit-nessing the anointing of a woman facing surgery might help another person to overcome hesitation and ask for the sacra-ment’s healing and strength. Society’s impulse may be to mar-ginalize the sick, but the tradition of our community is to see them at the center of our life. When Roman persecutors ordered St. Lawrence the Deacon to hand over the jewels of the church, he assembled a motley crew of the sick and the infirm and an-nounced with all humility, “Behold, my lord, the treasures of the church of Christ.” —Rev. GOD’S WORD TODAY The Easter season is a time of mystagogy. Mystagogy is an ancient word that simply means “unfolding the mysteries.” During the Easter season, the Church unfolds the mysteries of Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection so that the newly bap-tized, along with the entire community of believers, can grasp more fully the meaning of the paschal mystery. Today’s scrip-tures offer a lesson in mystagogy for us all. Jesus’ place in salvation history is recounted by Saint Peter in the first reading and interpreted by Jesus himself in the Gospel passage. Like students who sit at the feet of their master, let us gather around the table of God’s word, asking God to open our hearts and minds to a renewed sense of the meaning of the paschal mys-tery in our lives. S T E W A R D S H I P REFLECTION “Repent therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away.” With these words St. Peter advises the Gentiles who are gathered out-side the Temple in an area known as “Solomon’s Porch.” Of course, his advice is also applicable to us right here and now. As mentioned previously the word “repent” means more than we normally may conclude. For us “repent” may simply mean to “be sorry.” Peter’s meaning is that we need to repent by “turning our lives around,” by changing completely. That is more of a challenge for us, to be sure. This kind of “change” is closely associated with the idea of stewardship. Stewardship requires a conversion of mind and heart. That is exactly the kind of “repentance” to which we are called by St. Peter. Salvation is more than just “wiping away” our sins. Salvation requires us to make dramatic changes in the way we live. If we do change, Peter assures us that our sins will be “wiped away.” That reference is to writing at that time; although we see ink today as being indelible, it was not in Peter’s time. Once something was written, it could still easily be wiped away. Only God can wipe away our sins, but the point is that if we sincerely change (repent) and seek conver-sion through God, our sins will truly be “wiped away.”

There is an immediate need for someone who would like to be a sacristan at the weekend Masses. Requirements are a love of Jesus and have a flexible nature. The tasks involved are relatively simple,

but essential to proper liturgy. We are willing to train. We just need some volunteers. Please consider helping your parish in this capacity. Please call Charlene at 530-5938.

repairs (experienced trouble shooters will visit the sites to check on workmanship and provide help when

needed); or helping at day care centers for low income families by assisting with the children’s programs,

You have called us by baptism to be faithful members of your Church. Send the Holy Spirit to guide the work

of the Second Synod of the Diocese of Reno. Inspire us to bring new life

to the mission of your Church here in northern Nevada.

Through the work of our Synod, may we follow where the Holy Spirit leads, to become instruments of hope for the world

ISSUES OF PEACE & JUSTICE On this 3rd Sunday of Easter, we continue to contemplate the profound Mystery of the Resur-rection. Pope Francis’ words from his Easter Vigil homily help us understand the path to be-ing “of one heart and mind,” through the Spirit of Truth, to Peace: “We cannot live Easter without entering into the mystery. It is not something intellectual, something we only know or

read about… It is more, much more! To enter into the mystery” means the ability to wonder, to contemplate; the ability to listen to the silence and to hear the tiny whisper amid great silence by which God speaks to us. To enter into the mystery demands that we not be afraid of reality: that we not be locked into ourselves, that we not flee from what we fail to understand, that we not close our eyes to problems or deny them, that we not dismiss our questions… To enter into the mystery means going beyond our own comfort zone, beyond the laziness and indifference which hold us back, and going out in search of truth, beauty and love. It is seeking a deeper meaning, an answer, and not an easy one, to the questions which challenge our faith, our fidelity and our very existence. To enter into the mystery, we need humility, the lowliness to abase ourselves, to come down from the pedestal of our ‘I’ which is so proud, of our presumption; the humility not to take ourselves so seriously, recognizing who we really are: creatures with strengths and weaknesses, sinners in need of forgiveness. To enter into the mystery we need the lowliness that is powerlessness, the renunciation of our idols… in a word, we need to adore. Without adoration, we can-not enter into the mystery” (Homily Of His Holiness Pope Francis, April 4, 2015). 9

Beginning in April, on the second and fourth weekends of each month, one of the St. Rose of Lima delegates to the upcoming Diocesan Synod will lead the parish in the Prayer for Our Diocesan Synod near the end of Mass, just before the celebrant’s final blessing. In addi-tion, on the fourth weekend of each month one or more of the delegates will be available in the Narthex after each Mass to take your input or questions regarding the Synod. PADRE SERRA SAYS: “Lifestyles” and “Prayer Styles” of sisters and brothers in “community” are described by the National Coalition for Church Vocations following their description of the vows of chastity, poverty

and obedience, as follows: Personal choice within the specific spirit and custom of a community encourages a great deal of creative, thoughtful and prayerful decision-making about how sisters and brothers live and grow holy. Again, community is a frame of reference. Some people find living in a traditional convent or a very large community house best suited to them and to their current ministry or apostolate. Others are drawn to small-group living, perhaps in a small home or apartment. For still others, the decision must be to live alone — and yet to be very community-oriented during this interim. Basically, it’s not really where you live, but why and how you do it. That’s true about praying, too. Everybody does it, but there are many different ways in which we can relate to God. The com-munity helps here, too. Sisters and brothers pray — frequently within very ancient traditions of prayer, constantly finding new ways of keeping in close touch with God. Individually, they have their special ways of being with God, listening to Him and responding to His love. The variety of lifestyles and prayer forms evident in the so-called “active” communities is also apparent in contemplative groups of religious. Men and women attracted to contemplative life learn from the great prayers of the past even as they explore new forms of contemplative prayer and contemplative living. This vocation is a particularly precious gift to contemporary society and culture. Among some contemplatives there is renewed interest in “hermitages.” Through this kind of life some are finding, in greater isolation and solitude, an even more intense form of spiritual life.
