Mass Celebration in honor of

Survivors and Victims of the

COVID-19 Pandemic

The Ministry of Mercy will celebrate a Mass, in honor of the Survivors and Victims of the Covid-19 Pandemic, on Saturday August 29th 2020, at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Vincent Ferrer Roman Catholic Church. Parishioners are asked to submit the names of loved ones (family and/or friends) to be honored.

Please submit the names on or before August 22nd to any member of the Ministry of Mercy or drop them off at the Rectory or in the Offering basket at Mass.

The Holy Father Prayer Intentions for August - Universal prayer intention: The Maritime World - We pray for all those who work and live from the sea, among them sailors, fishermen, and their families.

TRUST Keys hold great significance for those who carry them. They represent the trust and authority of the owner when given to another person. We may give our house key to a trusted friend to take care of our matters while we are away. We may give keys to someone responsible for maintaining or working in a particular building. Keys to vehicles are given to people who have proven themselves responsible drivers. The readings today focus on this kind of trust—the trust that conveys authority and responsibility. In the first reading, the symbol is specifically that of a key; but the second reading and the Gospel also speak of trust and leadership as they refer to the earthly church that Jesus established. Rocky

Jesus gave Simon a name based on the word for "rock." Peter had just acknowledged Jesus to be the Son of God and the Messiah (Christ). Jesus used that as an op-portunity to teach us about the importance of faith as the foundation of the church. There were many variations on what people thought the messiah would be. Some expected a political leader who would unite the Jews and maybe even overthrow their Roman masters. Others thought he would be a wonder-worker, a super-hero, who would use his power to make Israel a great and free nation. Some thought the messiah would provide food and riches in abundance. In faith we learn that Jesus has fulfilled all messianic hopes. He unites not just the Jews, but all people who believe in him. He sets us free from sin and death. He feeds our spiritual hun-ger with his own Body and Blood in the Eucharist. By commending Peter's faith, he shows us that faith is the foundation (rock) of the church. For the church is a family of people who believe all that Jesus taught because we believe in the person of Jesus. That is, we don't just believe that Jesus was real. We affirm that he is alive and important to our lives. We have experienced him in his words, in the sacra-ments, and in each other. May our faith always be solid as a rock. Prayer to Overcome Racism

Mary, friend and mother to all, through your Son, God has found a way to unite himself to every human being, called to be one people, sisters and brothers to each other. We ask for your help in calling on your Son, seeking forgiveness for the times when we have failed to love and respect one another. We ask for your help in obtaining from your Son the grace we need to overcome the evil of racism and to build a just society. We ask for your help in following your Son, so that prejudice and animosity will no longer infect our minds or hearts but will be replaced with a love that respects the dignity of each person. Mother of the Church, the Spirit of your Son Jesus warms our hearts: pray for us.

Prayer of the Faithful As people of God’s holy word, let us pray for all who are in need.

For openness in the Church to God’s generous and life-giving word, let us pray to the Lord. For an end to hunger throughout the world through a generous sharing of the planting and harvesting from every nation, let us pray to the Lord. For those who suffer in the heat, for those who endure storms, fires, and floods, and for all who respond to their needs with generous hearts, let us pray to the Lord. For migrant workers and for immigrants as they strive for a better life for themselves and for their families, let us pray to the Lord. For the health and safety of all in our communities as we continue to reopen in the wake of the pandemic, let us pray to the Lord. For all those who are sick, for all who suffer from COVID-19, and for all who have died, especially N., N., and N., let us pray to the Lord. For all the prayers that we hold in the silence of our hearts; for all our intentions spoken and unspoken, let us pray to the Lord.

SAINT MONICA (332-387) August 27 She had smiles for the neighbors, though her hus-band found her religion and the charity it inspired annoying. She made tearful prayers in private for a son, outwardly self-assured but, as his mother knew, inwardly restless, and whose girlfriend of a dozen years had borne his child out of wedlock. Though not the first or last such mother and son, Monica and Au-gustine are the Church’s most famous, so we keep their feast days back to back, with Monica’s, fitting-ly, first. To Rome she followed Augustine, then to Milan, where years of prayer—and nagging—finally bore fruit in his conversion by Saint Ambrose. For six months, mother and son enjoyed the blessing of rediscovering each other. Just in time! On the way home to North Africa, Monica took sick and died near Rome. No child who has mourned a parent can read, unmoved, Augustine’s tender account, in his Confessions, of Monica’s last days. At this time of the year, when parents watch apprehensively as chil-dren leave for school, may Monica’s perseverance and Augustine’s long-prayed-for conversion ease anxiety and kindle hope. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
