National Vocation Awareness Week November 5-11, 2017

Did you know that in our country, compared to 50 years ago, there are 20,000 fewer priests and 130,000 fewer religious sisters? At the same time, the Catholic population has continued to grow steadily. Many factors have contrib-uted to the decline: growing secularism, a lengthened peri-od of adolescence, attitudes about celibacy, etc. During the week we encourage all Catholics to: • Take time to pray for vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. • Reflect on our own vocation and strengthen our personal relationship with Christ. • Participate in the CALLED BY NAME process. • Invite and encourage young people to consider a vocation to priesthood or religious life and to consider participating in our discernment process. • Educate our young people about the importance of silent prayer and taking the time to truly listen to God's voice in our hearts. • Pray that those who are called to holiness in Christ will follow Him more closely into the priesthood and consecrated life with humble readiness.

Vocation Awareness:

“I can do all things in him who strengthens me.”

Have you ever felt that God might be calling you to a vo-cation to priesthood or consecrated life but feel like you are not worthy or not capable? St. Paul reminds us that God gives us the strength to follow the plan that he has for our lives. If you feel called to serve God and the Church as a Catholic Priest, contact the Diocese of Owensboro Office of Vocations at 270-683-1545 or owensborovocations.com, or [email protected] for more information. Called By Name: Do you know a faithful young man, high school and older, who may have a vocation to the priest-hood? We believe our future priests will come from our own parishes and schools, but need your help to identify them. During National Vocation Awareness Week, we are asking you to recommend young men you believe may have a vocation to priesthood. Anyone recom-mended receives information from the Vocations Office and will be invited to participate in our discernment opportuni-ties, such as retreats and our vocation camp. Recommenda-tions may be made online at vocations website: http://www.owensborovocations.com/called-by-name/

OCTOBER 29, 2017 • THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 3

Every day is Priesthood Day, but the last Sunday of Octo-ber is a special time designated to celebrate these men who commit their lives to the Lord and the Church through the Sacrament of Holy Orders. This is our opportunity to thank, affirm, and express love and support for all Priests, espe-cially our own here at Saints Peter and Paul: Fr. Richard and Fr. Basilio. How can we best honor our priests? Some ideas may include: • Invite them to your home or take them out for lunch or dinner; ask about their vocation story • Pray for all Priests who have served Saints Peter and Paul Parish • Send cards, notes and emails of appreciation • Pray for young men who are considering the Priesthood, and for an increase in vocations • Offer a “spiritual bouquet” when praying the rosary…

The first decade for your parish priest The second decade for the priest(s) who Baptized you,

gave you First Reconciliation and First Communion The third for the Bishop who Confirmed you The fourth for the priest who witnessed your marriage

or the Bishop who ordained you The fifth for the priest who will anoint you at death

• Commit to Pray for Priests throughout the year

Sympathy: We pray for Helen Brown at the death of her brother, Dan Wilson who passed away on Saturday, October 21st in Clementon, New Jersey. At the time of this bulletin, obituary information was incomplete. We do know that a Memorial Service will be held at a later date so we will keep you posted. Let us do keep Helen in our prayers as this was her last sibling. May she know of her church families’ prayers for her at this time of loss. We also pray for our parishioner, Ana Traceski, whose uncle, Fidel Esprada passed away on Sunday, Octo-ber 22nd in Bethlehem, Georgia. His funeral services are incomplete at the time of this bulletin deadline.

We pray for two former parish-ioners who have passed away. First we remember Beverly Wilson. Beverly passed away on Friday, September 1st at Baptist Health Hospital in Madi-sonville. Beverly was 64. She was born on July 21, 1953 in Aurora, Illinois to the late Louis and Ruby Olah. Beverly re-tired from Madisonville Community Col-lege in 2016 after twenty-six years of

service and was a member of Immaculate Conception Cath-olic Church in Earlington, KY and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Central City. She is survived by her husband, Joe Wilson, one son - Ryan Patterson of Greenville, and two daughters – Deana Baugh of Greenville and Terri “Charly” Gould of Madisonville, and 5 grandsons as well as one sister Sharon Lowery of Chatsworth, Georgia. A Funeral Mass was held on Thursday, September 7th at Immaculate Conception in Earlington with Fr. David Kennedy officiating. Many of you may remember Beverly as she and Joe attended our Sun-day, 8:00 a.m. Mass regularly before moving to Madi-sonville. We also pray for Bernadette Fisher who was also a former parishioner. Bernadette passed away on Monday, October 16th at at MidMichigan Health Care System in Midland, Michi-gan. Bernadette was born May 23, 1960 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Frederick and Dolores McGregor. A 1978 graduate of South Lake High School, she married Randy Fisher on May 23, 1980. She is survived by her husband, Randy; three children, Andrew Fisher of Columbia, Missouri, Brittany Puckett of Chili, New York and Katelyn Schneider of Cary, North Carolina; three sisters, Mary Ann Rice of Reed City, Michigan, Catherine Hanson of Warren, Michigan and Donna Liburdi of Grosse Ponte, Michigan. Her Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, October 20th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Detroit. Bernadette and Randy were ac-tive parishioners here at Saints Peter and Paul while Randy was stationed at Fort Campbell.

May we keep these families in our prayers this week as they mourn their loss and may we as a church pray: “May their soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.”

Thanksgiving Baskets – The Knights of Columbus will once again be sponsoring Thanksgiving Baskets to those in our community who are in need. In order that our parish can help with this worthy project, this weekend, October 28th/29th, grocery bags will be handed out at all Masses. Each family is asked to fill the bag (a list of food items is attached to each bag with one side in English and one side in Spanish). These grocery bags can be returned when you come to Mass and placed in the cloak room. All donations need to be at the parish no later than Thursday, November 16th. In addition, if you want to help the Knights of Colum-bus with the purchase of turkeys for the baskets, please place your monetary donation in the basket in the Narthex or give your donation to a Knight. These Thanksgiving Bas-kets will be distributed on Saturday, November 18th. Please know that the Knights of Columbus are only one of two organizations in Hopkinsville that provides Thanksgiving Baskets so your help is greatly needed.

All Souls’ Day, or the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed, is the day set aside to remember the souls of the faithful departed and deceased relatives on November 2nd. All Souls’ Day honors the souls in Purgatory, whereas All Saints’ Day is meant to honor all the Saints in Heaven. Originally, it was not meant for certain named individuals, but for whole classes of the faithful departed. Many view All Souls’ Day

The annual Trunk or Treat will take place on Tuesday, Oc-tober 31st beginning at 5:00 p.m. and concludes when the candy is gone. Trunk or Treat is open to the children of our parish and school. Children are invited to wear costumes, bring their buckets and visit each car to collect candy. Parents/adults are asked to help supervise. If you would like to help bring treats - please bring plenty of individually wrapped candy to share so that there are enough treats for all the children.

Blood Drive: Saints Peter and Paul will be sponsoring a Blood Drive on Wednesday, November 1st from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. in our gym. The Regional Blood Center is in need of your help in saving lives. Can you assist by donating a pint of blood? If you would like to assist with this blood drive by

greeting and registering donors or by bringing treats for the day, please see Libby.

Did you know the Western Kentucky Regional Blood Center is the sole supplier of blood and blood com-ponents to our community hospitals. Therefore, our blood donations ensure the availability of blood to: Jennie Stuart Medical Center, Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, Breckinridge Memorial Health, Caldwell County Hospital, Crittenden County Hospital and Ohio County Hospital.

All Saints’ Day, or the Solemnity of All Saints, is celebrat-ed every year on November 1st in honor of all Saints,

known and un-known. During the persecution of Christians in the early church, the number of martyrs grew so great that a separate day could not be as-

signed for each, so the Church, feeling all martyrs should be venerated, appointed one common day.

The first known church-wide celebration of All Saints’ Day was on May 13, 609, when Pope Boniface IV consecrated Rome’s Pantheon as a Church. The Feast of All Saints’ Day, on its current date, is traced to the foundation by Pope Gregory III (731–741) of an oratory in St. Peter’s Square for the relics “of the holy apostles and of all saints, martyrs and confessors, of all the just made perfect who are at rest throughout the world”. By decree of Pope Greg-ory IV, All Saints’ Day became a Holy Day of Obligation in 835 - meaning the faithful had permission to take off work to go to church just like Christmas, Good Friday, Easter, Pentecost and other holy days (from which the word “holiday” was eventually coined). Holy day customs vary around the world.

In Mexico, this is the same day as “Dide los Innocen-tes”, a day dedicated to deceased infants and children. In Europe, the day is commemorated with offerings of flowers or candles lit on the graves of the dead. In the Philippines graves are painted and repaired by family members.

as an extension of All Saints’ Day. This day was developed in the early Church alongside All Saints’ Day to remember the souls of ALL the dead. In 1035, Abbot Odilo instituted this commemoration of all the faithful departed to be ob-served by the monks of Cluny with alms and prayers for “the relief of the suffering souls in purgatory”. He established All Souls’ Day on November 2nd in Cluny, which was soon adopted by the entire Church. In many traditions and customs throughout the world, the lighting of candles is meant to kindle a light for dead souls languishing in darkness. Out of this grew the tradition of baking special bread or cakes, and “going souling”, where the poor went from house-to-house asking for food, and in exchange, they promised to say prayers for the dead. Today, this has become a special day for lighting candles in remembrance of our loved ones who have died.

Prayer for Our Beloved Dead Almighty God and Father,

it is our certain faith that your son, who died on the cross, was raised from the dead,

the first fruits of all who have fallen asleep.

Grant that through this mystery, your servants, who have gone to their rest in Christ,

may share in the joy of his resurrection. I ask this through Christ Our Lord.

Amen. St. John’s Abbey

After all names have been called from the parish, parishioners are invited to come forth and light a candle for their deceased loved ones. At the end of the service, all may take these candles home and continue to light them and pray for their loved ones during the month of November. Remember, you are invited to bring pictures of your deceased loved ones as we prepare special tables for them during this service. Please let Libby know if you are planning on bringing a picture.

OCTOBER 29, 2017 • THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 7

Pastor’s Greeting- All Saints & All Souls The Church’s celebration of God’s holy people (the saints) who are with God in glory was at first focused on the martyrs and the Blessed Mother. The martyrs had been victorious in death, remaining faithful

to Christ despite torture and execution. Mary was pre-eminent among all the saints in the Body of Christ, the Church. The Faithful drew strength from their example, ex-perienced miracles of healing through their intercession, often (where they were available) treasured their relics, and where possible prayed at their tombs. In the cata-combs of Rome, the pope and presbyters celebrated Mass in the tombs of martyrs. Eastern Christians as early as the middle of the fourth century celebrated all the martyrs on May 13th, on the Friday of Easter week, or on the first Sun-day following Pentecost. In Rome, the temple known as the Pantheon was given to Pope St. Boniface IV and rededicat-ed to “St. Mary and all the Martyrs” on May 13, 610 AD. But the first recorded observance of the festival of All the Saints on November 1st comes from England in the early eighth century. Within a hundred years it was permanently transferred by the pope to November 1st for all of the Church in Europe. In the eleventh century, through the influ-ence of the Benedictine monastery at Cluny, the commemo-ration of all the Faithful departed, i.e., All Souls, on Novem-ber 2nd spread throughout the western Church. A martyr or saint’s day in the early Church was the day of earthly death, for the martyr the day of their victory over death in Jesus Christ. It was celebrated as the dies natalis or birthday. For that matter Easter was the primary celebration of the birth day of Jesus, the First-born of the dead. The Church only celebrates the infant birth days of Jesus, Mary, and John the Baptist, but even with them keeps the day of their victory over death with greater solemnity. In selecting November 1st – 2nd for the collective birthdays of all the saints of every age and place (including those saints in the making who have died victoriously but may not yet be fully in the glory of God) the Church of the British Isles commandeered a pagan festival time of deceased ancestors for Christian purposes. The Church of Europe had done the same about four hundred years earlier in cele-brating the infant nativity of Jesus at the winter solstice (December 25th). The Christian celebration was already established in the hearts of the Faithful. Here it was a mat-ter of the light of Truth unmasking superstitions associated with remembering the dead, not of finding a Christian ex-cuse to keep a pagan party going. In fact it was quite lib-erating not to have to fear and pay homage to the dead so as to be safe from their mischief or worse. We celebrate our unbroken family and communion of holiness with the Saints and the Faithful Departed. Pope Saint John XXIII, Saint Teresa of Calcutta, and Pope Saint John Paul II are not alone as heroes of our times. Individually and privately we should ask the intercession of the other holy people in Christ whom we have personally known. We certainly ask their prayers before they die and death does not break our bonds in Christ and in our human family. The story of the Church is a history of people like

ourselves who by the grace of God shine heroically in their time and through the ages. It is also the story of those who fall, get up, and stumble across the finish line. We remem-ber them all, or should. We celebrate our heroes and hero-ines, ask that they pray for us and with us, and ask the Lord to bless us with similar gifts for our times. We have com-passion for our sisters and brothers who have died still struggling like ourselves with sin. For them we pray in sup-port of the victory of grace as each stands before God in personal and purifying judgment (Purgatory). May each be purified of all selfishness and sin, any unrepentance, any reluctance to forgive others. Christ Jesus pleads for each and offers himself for all before his Heavenly Father. Each must completely renounce self for Christ. For this we too pray in the Holy Spirit, urging them on to victory. We must forgive them all in their Purgatory and make similar amends in our own purging conversions, for where they stand, so, in turn, shall we. For we are the Communion of Saints, a cara-van of pilgrims stretched through time into eternity in the flock of Jesus Christ, being led by the Holy Spirit to the house of our Heavenly Father. Together we look expectant-ly toward the day of Resurrection and life in the world to come. Fr. Richard Trivia Night: We have an upcoming Adults Only (21 and
