Happy Second Sunday of Advent!

We’re getting closer to the manger scene and the birth of Christ every day and amidst all of the celebration and chaos, it’s easy to forget some of the gritty details surrounding the birth of Jesus.

Luke’s gospel this week introduces us to John the Baptist--talk about a gritty character--wearer of animal skins, eater of locusts, and ranting and raving to the crowds throughout Galilee. But before Luke introduces us to John, he spends time situating EXACTLY when and where we are: “In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene….”

This a complicated way of Luke waving his hands at his readers and saying, “HEY!! This was a SPECIFIC TIME and PLACE. There were THESE people in charge politically and other sources of history will back me up!” He wants us to know who the civil leaders were at the time to set the stage: this is not some theoretical story, but REAL people living in the REAL world. It matters because John, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph were all historical figures whose world was bleary and complicated. Remember that the Holy Family was fleeing persecution to save their unborn child. Remember that even after Jesus was born, all of the male infants were slaughtered by Herod in attempts to preserve his power. The world was chaotic and violent, even for those bearing and beholding the Son of God.

Emmanuel, that iconic Advent song, reminds us that despite the mess around us sometimes, God isn’t in heaven pulling marionette strings to inflict suffering. Rather, God took on our limited human form to be in the mess with us. That’s what Emmanuel means: “God WITH us.” And finding God in the particular is where we can truly fall in love. The particular means a dirty barn and homeless couple 2000 years ago, but it also means asking who Mary, Joseph and John might be in 2018. That’s why I love the image above, imagining a modern “Jose y Maria.” The scandal of Jesus’ birth gets lost in gorgeous nativities and shining lights, but hits home for me when I talk with a pregnant mother seeking solace at a domestic violence shelter or talk with families struggling to keep their children warm this winter. It’s the particular that matters and only in seeing that can we understand just how radical and universal Jesus’s influence is. He has taken the lowly and raised them up as holy and that includes all of us in our own particular messiness. - Angie

Our JJ Youth Group is gathering supplies to send care packages to our troops for the holiday

season. There will be a labeled box in the foyer to drop your donations. Donations will be sorted and boxed at our next Youth Group meeting on December 18th. Thank you

for your support!

On Saturday our school Robotics Team participated in the First Lego League Qualifier at the Ricci School in North Providence. Twenty teams competed and were judged on programming, team work, and a research project. It was a great experience for our students and certainly very educational. This would not be possible without the willingness of our Technology Teacher Mrs. Julie Nathanson and Parishioner Mr. Roland Hebert as both have given much of their time in preparing our eight students for this competition.

Recently, we gathered outside the school as Father blessed a beautiful Dogwood tree that we had planted in memory of Andrew Martin class of 2013. Andrew’s parents, Cathy and Tim Martin, joined us for this special event. Our Student Council President and Vice-President also helped plan the program. I also want to thank parishioner David Clift for arranging to have the tree planted and stone engraved with Andrew’s graduation year inscribed. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the support of the faculty and staff of St. Rose of Lima School as they were the ones who were responsible for deciding to name a tree in honor of Andrew, as well rename the Scholarship Fund, the Andrew Martin Fund. This special gathering truly brought the St. Rose of Lima community together.

This past Friday we celebrated First Friday Mass at school hosted by Grade 6. Our Chorus as usual provided us with beautiful music. Mrs. Lorraine Gagnon, our Chorus teacher, has been preparing all of our students for our annual Christmas concert. Of course, all parishioners are welcome so please save the date - Thursday, December 13th 6:30pm at the church. In the meantime, I look forward to seeing everyone at Breakfast with Santa in the parish hall.

Thank you to our grade 3 class who did a wonderful job hosting our 10:30 Mass last week. Thank you to all our students and families for joining us for this special Mass. It is a blessing to have our youth participate in our Mass services.

You are Invited to our Production

In the Spirit of St Nicholas... This past Thursday, we celebrated the feast day of St Nicholas of Myra, a bishop in the early church who was known for his generosity and love for children. His spirit is witnessed every year during the season of Advent by the parishioners of St Francis, St Rose & Clement, and St Catherine’s. Our tri-parish community comes together during this season and gives generously to support those in need throughout Rhode Island.

The Jesse Tree at St Francis collects gift cards so that their Social Justice Committee can shop for gifts to be distributed to families in need by Catholic Charities. The Giving Tree at St Catherine’s provides hats, gloves, and socks for the homeless and gift cards which are delivered to various local charity organizations. Sts Rose & Clement’s parishioners are able to choose a tag from their tree to provide various unwrapped gifts for families at St. Rita’s Church, the Institute for the Study & Practice of Nonviolence, and elderly residents at Jeanne Jugan home in Pawtucket.

If you haven’t had a chance to contribute this year, there is still time! The deadline for donations at all three parishes is Sunday, December 16th. You can shop this week and bring in your gifts when you attend Mass next weekend! Without a doubt, the spirit of St Nicholas is alive and well in Warwick RI! Thank you to the whole tri-parish community for the difference that you make in our local area!
