Marie Hill and Andrea Bendlin from the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center, NOAA affiliate, graced us with their presence on Wednesday afternoon. The researchers shared slides that describe the characteristics of marine mammals and had the students participate by helping them distinguish the difference between Mysticetes and Odontocetes. The scientists also talked about how they study cetaceans using photo-identification, tissue sampling, satellite tagging, and passive acoustics. The students were able to see a video of the satellite track of a pilot whale they tagged and heard

underwater sounds of whales and dolphins. The class then enjoyed a few exercises that allowed them to talk or make noises into a microphone and visualize their sounds using computer software the scientists use on their research ship. *Snippets of the students THANK YOU notes... I liked your presentation because I learned that dolphins make higher sounds than a humpback whale. Thank you for sharing your time with us. -

LiSha I learned about spinner dolphins today. It can spin and turn in the air 5 times, maybe even more! -BoMee The best part was listening to the whales and learning how to find cetaceans by using GPS and other tools. In class Ms. Kathy shared how blubbers are fat and are very tough. After your came, I now know that we can learn a lot about cetaceans from their blubbers. MathCourt will be held on Saturday May 9th at Kagman Elementary School at 9am. This meet is by invitation only for Kinder through 3rd grade. Good luck to all participants!

The 8th class is planning a field trip on Tuesday morning for US History. We will be going to

different historical sights in the Marpi area and then traveling to American Memorial Park to visit the museum. We are still looking for volunteers from the community to help drive

our students that morning. Please contact Mr. Harris if you are willing to help at a.harris@sissaipan.net. Thank you!

ETC’s are very important to us. If you own a business on Saipan, you have an opportunity to directly help any school on the island through Public Law 10-73. Please consider giving your ETC to SIS to help purchase new books, materials and technology for our students. It is a simple three step process:

1. Write a check to SIS between $10 and $5,000. 2. SIS will give you a receipt.

3. Attach the receipt to your monthly or yearly tax return.

SIS is one of only a few schools on Saipan that operate without regular funding from a religious or corporate organization. Please help continue the SIS tradition of excellence in education. Donate if you can or kindly help spread the word about ETC donations to friends with businesses. Please contact the office should if you need more information. We have ETC information packets in English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese or Russian.

G8 Visiting Historical Sights Educational Tax Credit(ETC)

The 5th graders were privileged to have Mr. Lino Olopai come to visit our classroom for the morning. He explained Carolinian culture to the students. They were very excited to hear his scary local legend. We wish him the best of luck on his sailing trip next week. The students couldn’t believe that he is able to sail 600 miles without any navigational equipment. We welcome other visitors to the 5th grade classroom to share their knowledge of the cultures of the Pacific Islands.

who represented the NMI during the Brisbane Open

Age Tournament that took place in Brisbane, Australia. In singles, she earned 11th place out of 28 participants. In the team event, her team received 5th place out of 16 teams. Woohoo!
