Have you seen ever seen a hotel made of salt?, Well, if you take a trip to Salar de Uyuni, otherwise known as the Bolivian salt flat, you might have the chance to sleep in one, Salar de Uyuni is the largets salt flat in the world and a popular destination for backpackers in South America. While it takes a long time to get to and is normally visited in a 3 or 4 day long tour , the Bolivian salt flat is one the most unique places any traveler can experience.

The Salar de Uyuni salt flat is located 3,650 meters above sea level in the mountainous region of southwestern Bolivia. It covers an amazing 12.000 square kilometers of land and contains an estimated 10 billion tons of salt.

Salar de Uyuni was formed when part of prehistoric salt lake, Lago Minchin, driep up thousands of years ago. During the dry season, the area is nothing but dry salt as far as the eye can see.

Unfortunately, a visit to Salar de Uyuni is no easy excursion. Because of Salar de Uyuni is extremely mountainous and remote location, travelers are forced to deal whit cold nights, the risk of altitude sickness and a lack of acces to clean water an food.

A trip to the Bolivian salt falt is one most travelers describe as unforgettable. Imagine being surrounded by 12.000 square kilometers of incredibly white scenery during the day and sleeping in a fully furnished salt house at night. Where else in the world can you do that?
