Salary Guide 2018-20192
HIGHLIGHTS
Highlights
WHERE THE JOBS ARE
BC and Ontario are poised to be the leaders in job creation. Alberta,
after a sluggish couple of years, is catching up to its pre-recession
levels of job creation.
ECONOMIC OUTLOOK
Despite some challenges due to a lingering slowdown, Canada’s
GDP grew 3% last year. Although pressures still exist, experts believe it will experience sustained growth
of around 2% throughout 2019.
BUSINESS INVESTMENT
Companies are bullish on economic growth, with 44% of businesses planning on increasing their spend on
investments in the next year.
SALARY FORECAST
Average pay is projected to increase 2.4% in 2018-2019; more than the 2.2% average increase a year ago.
UNEMPLOYMENT
Canada’s unemployment rate hovered above record low levels in the first half of 2018. Coupled with a stabilizing economy, it’s
expected to stay around 6.1% well into 2019.
FORECAST
Traditional industries are increasingly looking towards automating their processes. Rather than threaten
existing jobs, technology will realign skills and job opportunities and
increase demand for engineers and technical professionals.
SKILLS SHORTAGE
At a time when unemployment rates are at their lowest, Canada is facing a shortage of skilled labour.
An average of 26% of Canadian businesses report facing
labour shortages.
Salary Guide 2018-20193
NOTE FROM THE CEO
Design Group StangEngineering & Technical Recruitment
By any measure Canada’s employment scene has become increasingly healthy throughout 2018. In March 2018 the overall unemployment rate of 5.8% was the lowest in four decades with all provinces showing measured employment growth. This was followed by further job creation into the summer months. Meanwhile, this performance has been without the boom of the oil & gas and mining industries experienced prior to 2015. Against the backdrop of trade agreement negotiations and tariffs there lurks some uncertainty, but nevertheless for employers seeking to hire engineering, construction and technical staff, competition has increased.
Construction and civil engineering continue to drive the job markets in BC, Ontario and Quebec with commercial, housing, roads and transportation projects evident to all who travel through the major cities. Manufacturing shows steady hiring across the East. An improving economy in Alberta has seen a tightening of the job market as employers return to hiring after many workers left Alberta during the oil & gas downturn to seek opportunities elsewhere.
As workers are presented with more choices, understanding compensation trends and deploying effective hiring practices becomes top of mind for most organizations. We present this year’s salary guide as a tool we hope will assist you and your organization compete for talent in your industry and region. And, as usual, we would be pleased to add some colour and detail over the phone or in person regarding the data in this guide, or on other trends and hiring strategies in your market.
