A suspicious looking mound ofearth resembling a newly duggrave discovered by two elderlywomen hikers in the hills east ofGarnet was the object of inspec-tion by county authorities Wed-nesday.

It proved to be nothing morethan a natural mound formed byerosion, wind and past floodwaters.

Leading the digging partycomposed of Deputy Sheriff W.R, Matthies, Fire Chief Bill Leo-ncsio and Fireman Ray Young-berg, over rugged terrain werethe two discoverers of themound, Stella Shore and Flor-ence Thorne, both of the DesertTrailer Village.

The jagged trail led straight upand down over several largefoothills and although the menwere puffing and gasping forbreath as a result of the ruggedclimb, the two women continuedonward obviously undisturbed byexertion the rugged males intheir wake were suffering.

New Road to CutBig Bear Mileage

Only Short Link LeftTo Be ConstructedWith the last link of approxi-

I mately two and a quarter miles! rapidly being closed, a new short

i cut from Pioneertown to Big| Bear valley will be completed bysummer and the mountain area

i will be brought to within 65miles of the Village, according toW. E. Schmidt, of RattlesnakeGulch, a pioneer of the mountainarea.

Schmidt was in town last week, coming across the desert from 29Palms where enthusiasm overthe new short cut road into themountains is high.

THE ROAD has already beenbuilt from Pioneertown to Burnscanyon and there remains twoand one-quarter miles to go toRose Mine from which spot aroad exists into Big Bear.

Schmidt said the road is being| built by private funds and labor.Equipment and man-hours havebeen donated to the task andmany have contributed cash. Anyothers who wish to contribute tothe road may do so by sendingtheir check to Mrs. W. H.Schmidt, mother of the pioneer, who is keeping a close tab onfunds contributed. Her address is 1care of Yucca Valley post office,Pioneertown.

VOLUNTEER CREWS arebuilding the road which is a good

: mountain road of easy grades.; Equipment has been loaned by

| Ray Hopman and Pioneertownand the forestry service haspromised to improve the laststretch between Rose Mine andBig Bear valley.

There is a road to Pioneertowni from the 29 Palms road now and| when the last stretch throughi the mountains is completed, thei long trip to Redlands or San| Bernardino and then to Big BearI will be eliminated and the mile-

j age. now around 100 miles, willI be cut to a little more than 60.

THE NEW ROAD will also beavailable as a link in the pro-posed highway linking Morongo,Joshua Tree, Yucca and 29 Palmswith the coastal area without thepresent dip south through Beau-mont and Banning along High-way 99.

A recently introduced radiantbaseboard panel eliminates un-

; sightly radiators, looks like the1 conventional baseboard and canbe painted to harmonize with the
