News & Notes: SMS Supercars Press Release

Steve Saleen congratulates Larbre Competition for Le Mans win with his S7R Orange County, California / Le Mans, France. (June 13, 2010) Today, Steve Saleen, the man who founded Saleen, Inc, and who created America's most successful racecar, the S7R, congratulated Larbre Competition boss Jack Leconte on winning the GT1 class of this year's 24 hours of Le Mans in his S7R.

Says Steve Saleen: "The S7R is the most successful produc-tion based American car to win the most significant race in the world for manufacturers. After having won at virtually every major race track in the world, the win at Le Mans represents the crown of motor racing. We would like to con-gratulate Jack Leconte and his drivers - Roland Bervillé, Julien Canal, and Gabriele Gardel - on this extraordinary achievement. The almost entirely trouble-free race for the S7R underlines the excellence of this almost ten year old design."

Steve Saleen launched the S7 in August of 2000 at Pebble Beach. At its introduction, it was the world's fastest road car. The S7R race version was introduced shortly thereafter, win-ning in its very first year all of the four championships in which it competed: the driver's championship of the Ameri-can and European Le Mans Series', the American Grand Am Series, and the FIA GT Championship. Since then, the S7R has competed in numerous races and championships, and has won at least once in every year since. This year, team Larbre Competition competed at Le Mans with the S7R in the GT1 class, where it won against the 2nd placed Corvette C6, an Aston Martin DBR9R in 3rd as well as the Lambor-ghini Murciélago and the Ford GT. Further information about the S7 and the S7R success can be found on Steve Saleen's website www.smssupercars.com.

Editor’s Note: I received the following text message from Steve Saleen on June 13, 2010: “The S7 just won the 24hr of La Mans!!!

I could almost hear the excitement that he must have been feeling. He had planned to attend the race, but had a last minute change in plans and did not go to France.

Editor’s Comments

I have been traveling to shows to assist Steve Saleen with set-up and host his appearances at events. When thinking about Steve Saleen and his quest to build SMS Supercars, the movie Rocky comes to mind.

Steve is on a mission to rebuild the Steve Mark Saleen name with his company, SMS Supercars. The business relies on the efforts of Molly Saleen, Sean Saleen, Clint Saleen, Fred Blum, designer Phil Frank, and Steve’s loyal staff to build a new prod-uct that will give the enthusiast a vehicle that commands the respect, love, and loyalty of his customers. Saleen and SMS Vehicles are driven and cared for as though they are special treasures.

Steve Saleen has a real passion for performance vehicles. He loves to talk to the fans. He would love for everyone to experi-ence the special feeling of driving one of his vehicles that are built to combine performance, functionality, and safety with a distinctive design.

Through his signature events and giving free posters, Steve Saleen endeavors to build the brand recognition for SMS Super-cars and to meet and greet as many fans as possible. Person-ally autographing Steve Saleen produced vehicles is Steve's way of personally thanking owners.

Having your Saleen autographed is a chance, for at least a brief moment, to see the genuine, sincere person behind the name. It is hard to keep Steve on schedule because he loves to talk to the owners.

You may say that the Saleen vehicles are too expensive for your budget. I once looked at the magazines and really wanted one of those Saleen Mustangs. Everyone needs a goal. Wait for a used Saleen and eventually work your way up to a SMS Mus-tang, SMS Challenger, or SMS Camaro.

If you can't afford a new SMS vehicle right now, SMS Super-parts will help you fill that need to make your Mustang, Chal-lenger, or Camaro a ride to be admired.

Along with the many Saleen Owners and Enthusiasts Club members that have been by Steve’s side for many years, I want to thank Steve for allowing us to become part of his extended family. If you attend events and see a group of people assisting Steve, understand that we are not employees. We are club members who enjoy our Saleen vehicles and love to help the Saleen family.

When Steve’s schedule allows, we try to get together for dinner. We have even been known to join Steve at the go-kart track. I must tell you, Steve drives a go-kart as though he is in a major race! Watch out for Steve. Of course, he often becomes the target of our aggressive driving.

At the Asheville MCA show (pages 13, 14, &16), Steve Saleen and SMS Supercars sponsored the Saturday evening entertain-ment. The Pink Flamingos, an entertainment group from New Mexico, made their third appearance for Steve Saleen. They appeared in 1999 at the Charlotte 35th Mustang Anniversary, at the Nashville 40th Mustang Anniversary, and at the Asheville, North Carolina 2010 Mustangs at the Mansion show. The enter-tainment frequently had audience members on stage to join in for some impromptu fun. By the end of the evening, the SOEC members present were on stage for a rendition of WE ARE FAMILY. Thanks for all of the fun and the feeling that we are family. Good luck to Steve and the whole Saleen family.

Steve Saleen’s SMS Supercars Unveils the 2011 SMS 302 Mustang

SMS Media Information: Steve Saleen launched SMS Supercars after he left Saleen, Inc. He has been gradually building up the company to a full-fledged powerhouse of automotive excellence. While the launch of the 2009 SMS 570 Challenger at the New York Auto Show last year signaled the seriousness of his new endeavors, the SEMA show in November 2009 high-lighted another new element of Steve’s work, SMS Superparts, a one-stop-shop for all your aftermarket needs for speed.

At Detroit 2010, Steve gave a visual glimpse of what the last of the muscle car trio will look like, the SMS 620 Camaro, but the Mustang is what a lot of his fans associate with him. On April 17, 2010, the 46th Anniversary of the launch of the Ford Mustang on April 17, 1964, Steve Saleen introduced his brand new 2011 SMS 302 Mustang. Based on the new 2011 Mustang, it util-izes the 5.0L V8 engine and produces over 440 hp in normally aspirated form and over 535 hp with the patent pending SMS 296 Supercharger. Prices start at $ 54,990.00 and deliveries started in May 2010. Details are on www.smssupercars.com.

Fabulous Fords Forever 2010

The 25th Annual Fabulous Fords Forever, The Most Gigantic Car Show Ever, was held at Knott’s Berry Farm, Buena Park, California on Sunday, April 25, 2010. Approximately 2,000 Fords from 1903 to 2010 were displayed in 50 class. The event was sponsored by the Ford Car Club Council, Western Region.

This year’s event celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Taurus, 50th Anniversary of Falcon, 55th Anniversary of T-Bird, and 70th Anniversary of the Lincoln Continental.

Steve Saleen attended and had his traditional autograph ses-sions, free SMS posters, and autographing of Saleen vehicles.

Raleigh Classic Auto Auction 2010

On May 14 and 15, Steve Saleen attended the Raleigh Clas-sic Auto Auction 2010. Chris Leith Automotive, SMS Super-cars dealer, Wake Forest, North Carolina, had the auction at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh.

For the event, Steve Saleen went from car manufacturer to car salesman and teacher. He appeared to really enjoy ex-plaining the transformation from the Dodge Challenger to the SMS Challenger.

In listening to Steve Saleen describe the details of the design and engineering of the SMS 570X Challenger, it is evident that every change has a purpose. What the untrained eye sees as cosmetic changes are part of the balance engi-neered to maximize the car's performance, driver comfort, and safety. Small curves in the interior of the hood are designed to have the hood fold on impact. The lower front fascia is part of the air intake system. The redesigned rear fascia extends the rear panel an extra two inches to allow the wing to be mounted further back to provide improved down-force. It looks great, but it is also an important part of the total per-formance.

SMS Supercars is a manufacturer, not a car tuner, and is the Manufacturer of Record for its vehicles. As such, crash testing has been done to certify that its vehi-cles meet all safety standards. SMS Supercars provides a full bumper to bumper warranty on its vehicles, and the vehi-cles are certified for EPA emission standards for all fifty states.

It is clear that the SMS product incorporates engineering for speed and style. Steve Saleen stated that “SMS vehicles are a great value when considering the horsepower per dol-lar ratio.”

Steve Saleen is continuing his mission to give the enthusiast a true built in the USA Supercar. With the production of the SMS Challenger, the SMS Mustang, and the soon to come SMS Camaro, Steve has a performance vehicle for every power hungry car enthusiast. He loves his work and takes great pride in the vehicles that he produces.

Father’s Day on Long Island, New York Nineteen Saleens were at Chicken Holiday in Westbury, Long Island, New York to greet Steve Saleen on Father’s Day, June 20, 2010. Getting onto the island with a trailer was a challenge, but once on the island, the area was like any suburban area. The gathering was held by Di Blasi Mo-tors, Inc, Corona, New York, a new SMS dealer (www.diblasimotors.com), and hosted by the Long Island, L.I. Stangs.

MCA Grand National, Mustangs Northwest 30th Annual Roundup, Bellevue, Washington Text and photos by Debbie

July 15-18, 2010 was an exciting time in the Pacific Northwest as it was the first time that the MCA Grand Nationals were held on the west coast. The festivities began on July 15th with 60 partici-pants taking their cars to Pacific Raceways to drive the 2.8 mile course. Rides were available courtesy of Miller Motorsports and Roush in cars like the FR500S, the new Roush, and a 2011 GT350 driven by MCA President Steven McCarley.

Pony Trails took off from Monroe with over 267 cars driving through Snohomish, Lake Stevens, Granite Falls, Arlington Dar-rington, Marblemount, Rockport, and ending at the Newhalem Dam. This route showcased farms, rivers, and snow capped mountains, giving out of town guests the chance to see beautiful areas of the Pacific Northwest.

The MCA Judged show on July 17th had 260 cars from across the US and Canada. Steve, Liz, and Molly Saleen along with George Follmer were in attendance this year. Shelby, Ford, Miller Motorsports, and Roush trailers along with the SMS booth added a lot to the show.

As always, the dinner cruise was a hit. Over 250 people were treated to an amazing meal and incredible views of the Seattle skyline. Guest speakers included NPD's Rick Schmidt, Steve Saleen, MCA President Steven McCarley, and Motorsports Hall of Fame race car driver George Follmer. The highlight of the evening was the auction. Steve Saleen made auction history when he outbid himself on a hat donated by Jack Roush. When asked why he outbid himself on Roush's hat, he simply told eve-ryone that he makes great cars, too.

The People's Choice show was held on Sunday, July 18th, with 1300 cars in attendance. There were more than 100 Saleen cars in the parking lot where the SMS booth was located. The new 2011 SMS 302's are incredible!! I was also given the honor of volunteering in the SMS booth with Steve, Liz, Molly, and Jim Dvorak. Between autograph sessions, the Saleen's were taking pictures, autographing cars, holding babies, and talking to fans that came to the booth, including a couple from Australia. They made everyone feel welcome, and were very gracious.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation had a booth. By selling 45th Anniversary teddy bears dressed in leather jackets (donated by the Ford Foundation), they raised over $800 for things like research, insulin pumps, and new treatments. Steve Saleen lent his support by autographing over 30 bears. (Steve autographed 10 bears at the 45th Anniversary show in 2009.) They also displayed the Legends of Ford hood airbrushed at SEMA by legendary airbrush artist Mickey Harris and signed by Edsel Ford, Steve Saleen, Parnelli Jones, John Force, Ashley Force, Vaughn Gitten, Jr., Robert Hight, and Chip Foose. Steve Saleen was presented a hat from Cece Green, a 9 year old who was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes when she was 16 months old and had just received an insulin pump which will allows her to live a more normal life. Cece handed Steve the hat, and Steve told her he would be honored to accept the hat, but she had to autograph it for him, and then he would autograph one for her. It was adorable when she had to ask her dad what an autograph was.

I also had the privilege of meeting a 17 year old young man who applied for a grant and built his own Mustang. He was so proud of his car. He didn't realize that the show, the first show for his car, was the MCA Grand Nationals. He was so nervous to be judged on that level. His car received a Gold Award! When Liz Saleen rode around the parking lot and made the comment - nice car - he was on cloud 9. It is really fantastic to see the love for Mustangs reach the younger generation.

Sunshine in Erie, Pennsylvania

The Lake Erie Mustang Owners Club's Annual Car Show was held at Bob Ferrando Ford, Girard, PA on August 1, 2010. The Erie weather is always an issue! This year sun-shine was plentiful! Eight Saleens were present. The show had their usual Chinese Auction and 50/50 raffle with the proceeds going to the Autism Society.

Ed and Lisa Hinker were present with their S281E #07-0032. They traveled from Sturgis, South Dakota with Saleen Owners Frank and Judy Lawton, also from Sturgis. They were on the way east pick up Frank's newly purchased Saleen Sterling Edition. In addition to showing a car, the Sturgis visitors were at the show to distribute information about the 2010 Sturgis Mustang Rally.

One of the most noticeable Saleens that were at the show was an authentic Saleen #01-0503 that was wrecked and then restored with a custom Pink paint job and graphics. See the photo in column two of this page.

Virginia “Beach” would ordinarily bring to mind a weekend of sun and sand. The weekend of August 13-15, 2010 featured sun and Mustangs at the Pembroke Mall, Virginia Beach, Virginia. The Southeastern Virginia Mustang Club held the Mustang Club of America National Hoof Prints in the Sand 2.

On Friday, a nice breeze and 84 degrees temperature made the task of cleaning the cars just a little easier. The tradi-tional banquet was held on Friday evening instead of Satur-day evening. Six Saleens were among the cars that were judged on Saturday afternoon. Saturday evening featured a drive down Virginia Beach Boulevard to the popular beach area. Street performers were on corners and side streets to add to the festive vacation atmosphere. The people on the sidewalks stopped and photographed the parade of Mus-tangs on the Boulevard.

The Mustang Club of America National Shows are a good venue to find Mustang and Saleen owners who are enthusi-astic about displaying their vehicles. In addition to the judg-ing, fun and fellowship are the bonuses gained by attending National MCA Shows. If having your Saleen judged doesn’t appeal to you, try attending a show for the fellowship and you may find that earning a trophy is possible.

The Personal Touch

Steve Saleen offers the personal touch to his new SMS Su-percars dealerships. He made a “follow-up” visit to the Chris Leith Dodge dealership’s cruise-in on Friday evening, August 20, 2010. The SMS Challenger was the spot-light vehicle as Steve Saleen signed free SMS Challenger posters for fans. Steve passionately reviewed the details of his SMS Chal-lenger for visitors at the cruise-in.

Steve Saleen is busy spreading the word that his company, SMS Supercars, is the only authorized source for Steve Saleen vehicles — SMS Challenger, SMS Mustang, and SMS Camaro. www.smssupercars.com

If you’re not currently in the market for a new performance vehicle, you might consider performance parts for your cur-rent ride. SMS Superparts offers parts for your 2009 and up Challenger and 2009 and up Mustang. www.smssuperparts.com

Carolina Regional Show

Steve Saleen signs on new SMS dealers and offers a per-sonal visit to help promote the newly delivered SMS vehi-cles. On August 21, 2010, Steve Saleen visited Parkway Ford, Winston-Salem, North Carolina for a Signature Event.

The SVT Cobra Mustang Club held the 9th Annual Carolina Regional SVT Cobra, Mustang, and All Ford Show at Park-way Ford on Peters Creek Parkway. To accommodate the number of Saleens that were in attendance, the Saleen class was expanded. Twenty-four Saleens were present. The photos on this page are from the Carolina Regional Show.

The Mustang Club of America 2010 National Mustang Show, Mustangs at the Mansion, was held by the Blue Ridge Mustang Club of Asheville on September 3-5, 2010. The beautiful 8,000 acre Biltmore Estate was invaded by Mustangs! Nearly 500 show cars were registered for the judged show field. Registered spectators were parked in other parking lots. Shuttle buses traversed the area to take people to the parking lots, hotels, and attractions on the estate. The main attraction was the Biltmore House. Completed in 1895, the Biltmore House was the home of George Washington Vanderbilt. See the front cover.

The Vanderbilt fortune was made by George Vanderbilt’s Great-Grandfather. In 1810 he built a ferry service on New York Bay that grew into a trade business and fleet of steamboats making

Once again David Bruno represented SOEC and SMS Supercars at the event.

Marcella Woods and Grey Synder (owners of Dan Gurney #82) helped with hanging the SMS banners. Marcella also won a Celebrity Pick Award By Bill Miller III.

Jose Becerra debuted his 1998 S351 Speedster #14 that had sat in a barn for a number of years. It won a 3rd place award in the 1994-2004 Saleen class. Jose's Speedster was parked next to the club tent, and he helped man the space when necessary.

Michael & Pam O'Sullivan brought their his & hers 2006 S281 Extreme coupes. Both have been tuned by JDM Engineer-ing. Mike won a 3rd place award in the 2005-09 Saleen class.

Jeff Foulk and his two sons, first time event attendees, enjoyed everything that Saturday offered. Jeff drove his 2006 S281 S/C coupe from Ohio, while his oldest son drove a Ford Super Duty pickup pulling Jeff's no-miles, original owner, 1985 Mustang GT hatchback. All three vehicles participated in the Carlisle Fun Field Show. Jeff's Saleen won a 2nd place award in the 2005-09 Saleen class.

The SOEC tent was a popular place, with free club posters and SMS Supercars sales material on hand for visitors. The PJ proved enticing to kids with cell phone cameras.
