edapt: Selling It With SuccessSelling edapt successfully requires quite a different approach than selling traditional lighting fixtures. It’s important to understand how it is sold and what types of projects you will win on in order to maximize your sales efforts.

edapt’s feature-set focuses on benefits to the end-user and in most cases, a return on upfront investment through ongoing energy savings. This return on investment can come in multiple forms, including cost savings in areas with high utility rates and usage restrictions, utility rebate programs, or perceived worker productivity benefits. It’s important to keep in mind that since initial costs for the product can be considered high, budget-conscious projects that will not ultimately be owner occupied will not generally be edapt opportunities.

edapt projects require more technical expertise in the areas of lighting controls, computer networks and computer software. For this reason, coordination and project management is usually much more involved. Ledalite has support personnel in place who have the expertise and experience to help you win edapt projects and ensure they are set up to operate as intended. It’s important to include Ledalite as early as possible in the design process in order to minimize any complexities you may have to deal with down the road.

The smart way to sell edapt is to focus on projects that have primary influencers who value the benefits edapt delivers. In general there are two situations where you will experience the most success:

HOW edapt WOrKS

How edapt Works

Workstation-Specific LightingTraditional office lighting systems supply the same amount of light throughout the floor area regardless of where visual tasks are being performed. The workstation-specific approach employed by edapt delivers task light only where it’s needed, while maintaining ambient light levels throughout the space. In a typical installation, 35 – 55% fewer edapt fixtures are required to meet recommended illumination levels in both task and non-task areas.

This typical office layout with private offices and open workstations would have 26 troffer-style fixtures.

Withanedaptsolution, oneluminaire is installed over eachworkspace, usinglessthan half the number of fixtures of the troffer instal-lation.

Presentation Tips and Talking PointsWhen making a presentation to a client, focus your conversation around the features thatareofgreatestinterestandvaluetotheclient.Referto“edapt: Selling It With Success” on pages 6-7 for help determining which features your client is likely to be most interested in. Depending upon your client’s needs, here are several key aspects and features of edapt that you may want to talk about and demonstrate:

Overall system approachWhat to say: • Typicalofficelightingsystemsaredesignedtoprovideacertainlevelof

average workplane illuminance throughout the space, which can result in inappropriate light levels in specific areas within the space. For instance, a pathway area may be lit to 50 fc instead of 10-15 fc as recommended by IESNA.Thisisacostlywasteofenergy.

• edapt is based on a completely different lighting methodology: workstation-specific lighting. In a typical open office application, one edapt fixture is located over each workstation or task lighting area to ensure that direct lighting is only provided where and when it is needed. Furthermore, because edapt’s task and ambient lamps are separately controlled, the system can maintain recommended ambient light levels in the space, resulting in a bright, attractive workplace for employees.

• ErgolightControlsisareliableandproventechnologythathasrealizedsubstantial success in a variety of major installations since 1998.

• ReinforcethekeyadvantagesofErgolightControlsversusalternativesystemssuchasDALI,including:lesshardware, simplerballastchanges, easier network expansion, and more sensor options (see page 29). Particularly emphasize that Ergolight is much easier to commission and maintain: occupancy and daylight sensors can be set on a global or group scalewithjustacoupleofmouseclicks, whereasDALIsensorsmustbemanually adjusted by a trained technician.

Personal Dimming, Improved

Productivity

Research conducted by the Light Right Consortium shows a direct link between personal dimming controls and improved performance in the workplace. Occupants with dimming controls demonstrated more sustained motivation and improved pro-ductivity,measuredby persistence and vigilance in perform-ing tasks.

Workstation-Specific 4ft Modulesedapt is very different to a traditional linear fixture, because it is founded upon a completely different lighting methodology: workstation-specific lighting. The main two differences in terms of module configuration are as follows:

• edaptisonlyavailablein4ftmodulelengths.

• Individualmodulescannotbeconnectedtogethertoformlinearruns.

Integrated Ergolight ControlsDaylight and occupancy sensors are elegantly integrated into every edapt fixture. The ballasts and sensors in the fixture are connected to an Ergolight control board, also located in the fixture, which is connected to the lighting network by network cable.Asaresult, lightlevelsandsensorsettingsineachedapt fixture can be precisely controlled and customized.

Sometimes a client may want a single aesthetic design for the lighting throughout a building, but only requires the functionality of Ergolight Controls in certain areas. For instance, some spaces may only require manual dimming or switching. To accommodate these applications, edapt is also available in a non-controlled version, without the Ergolight control board, sensors or network cable.

Mounting and Installation Featuresedapt fixtures are designed for fast and easy installation and reconfiguration of workstations. All three mounting options use an integrated quick-connect wiring system for both power and network connections.

Aircraft cable on gridTo save the contractor time when installing or reconfiguring the system, Ledalite has designed a custom J-box with quick connections for power and network cables.

Pendant or aircraft cable with ceiling panThis mounting system is even easier to reconfigure, because the entire ceiling pan and fixture can be lifted right out of the T-bar and dropped in to another location. AswiththeJ-box,Ledalitehasoptimizedallconnectionsforspeedandsimplicity.

Competition: Ergolight vs. DALIErgolight systems offer many significant advantages over alternative systems, such as DALIsystems.BelowisahighlevelcomparisonofErgolightControlsversusDALI.

COMPETITION / APPLICATIONS GuIDE

Advantage Ergolight Controls DALI

Less Hardware

Each Master Control Unit (MCU) can support up to800fixtures,witharepeaterrequiredevery150fixtures to boost the signal. No other hardware is required.Forexample,ifthereare600fixtures,only1 MCU and 3 repeaters are required.

Abusmasterisrequiredevery64ballasts,whichneedtobeinstalledinelectricalpanels.Morevoer,comparable systems to Ergolight require two ballasts everyfixture,whichmeansabusmasterisrequiredevery32fixtures.Thus,fortheexampleof600fixtures,aminimum of 19 bus masters and several electrical panels arerequired.Inpractice, thisestimateturnsouttobeconservative because typically each bus master is not fully loaded with the maximum number of 64 ballasts.

Faster Installation

Each fixture is labeled with a unique serial number in the factory. A ship disk with all the serial numbers ontheprojectissupplied, sosettingupthenetworkis a much simpler task.

Serialnumbersareassignedonthejobsitetoeachballast – not the fixtures. This increases installation time, becauseallballastshavetobeaddressedonsiteduring commissioning.

Simpler Ballast ChangesNon-proprietaryballastsareused,andwhenyouchange a ballast no recommissioning is required.

OnlyDALIballastscanbeused, andeveryreplacementballast must be recommissioned with a serial number by a trained technician

Easier Network ExpansionAdditional fixtures can be added to the network simply by connecting them to the network loop.

Ifthebusmasterlimitof64ballastshasbeenreached,an additional bus master must be added – even if only one extra fixture is required.

More Sensor OptionsOccupancy sensors in multiple fixtures can be linked so that lamps turn on or off in unison whenever any of the linked occupancy sensors are triggered.
