A SIGNATURE BUILDING

From a spectacular exterior...

A strong architectural statement, La Cité du Vin stands out with its bold curves and shape. Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazières, the architects from XTU architects, designed a space shaped by symbols of identity: shape of a vine stock, wine swirling in a glass, eddies on the Garonne. The architecture evokes the soul of wine and captures a fluid essence, ‘a seamless curve, intangible and sensual’. This roundness can also be felt in its indoor scales, spaces and materials. The facade consists of silk-screened glass panels and iridescent aluminium panels.

The facade of La Cité du Vin with its screen-printed glass and iridescent aluminium panels, glistens with gold reflections evoking the sand-coloured stone of the buildings of Bordeaux.

...To a bold interior

Each indoor space has a specific identity: the Thomas Jefferson Auditorium on the first floor with its ceiling of suspended wooden tubes, the belvedere with its mirrored bottle chandelier, or the immersive multi-sensory room with its curved glass walls printed with large wine-based designs.

Located on the second floor, the permanent tour is also a work of art in itself: 574 arches made from laminated timber, all custom made, forming the ceiling of this more than 3,000m² space.

For La Cité du Vin, english scenographers Roger Mann and Dinah Casson from Casson Mann have designed an immersive and innovative permanent tour making use of digital and interactive technologies (e.g. 3D images, decoration, smell diffusion) and drawing on a novel digital guide: the travel companion.

THE HALL OF COLUMNS: TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS As of 2017, the artistic and cultural life of La Cité du Vin will be punctuated by 3 major exhibitions each year. In autumn and spring, and for a duration of three months, 2 international art exhibitions will explore specific themes relating to the world of wine and its civilisations, by calling upon diverse disciplines: fine arts, design, photography, sculpture, graphic novels, history or ethnography…Each summer, a cultural event will focus on a wine region of the world, invited to La Cité du Vin to present its culture and traditions to visitors through an exhibition. In 2016, for its inaugural season, La Cité du Vin has opened its doors to photographer Isabelle Rozenbaum, who shares her artistic vision of the 3 years of construction work on La Cité du Vin in an exhibition of over 80 photos.

THE THOMAS JEFFERSON AUDITORIUMNumerous events over the year are scheduled in the 250-seater Thomas Jefferson auditorium. Throughout the season, a multi-disciplinary programme (entertainment, conferences, films, games, seminars and debates) intends to pique the visitor’s curiosity and present the wealth of contemporary creation and scientific research in the vast cultural domain of the world of wine.

THE READING ROOMA free area open to all, the reading room offers a wide selection of literary, historic, artistic and even anthropological works relating to the world of wine. This relaxing area is also the place to discover the famous authors, manga and graphic novel heroes or great scientists who write the history and make the news in the world of wine. THE WINE TOURS DESKThis information area on the ground floor allows visitors to find out about and book a vineyard visit, either nearby or in other regions across the world. They can visit Bordeaux’s vineyards by shuttle bus, using their own means of transport, or along the river using one of the water shuttles from the La Cité du Vin dock. Wine Routes information area is run by Bordeaux Metropole tourism board.

THE PONTOON OF LA CITÉ DU VINThe history of Bordeaux and its wine is closely linked to the river. La Cité du Vin’s iconic location next to the Garonne further strengthens its interaction with the city centre and vineyards thanks to a 90-metre pontoon secured to the river bank beside the building. It allows pleasure boaters to tie up closer to La Cité du Vin, as well as establishing water shuttles to enable visitors to travel to vineyards along the river. It is the ninth project implemented by the City of Bordeaux in the Port of the Moon since the 2000s, and encourages a gentle, environmentally-friendly, historic mode of transport allowing the creation of combined land/water tourist routes.
