An Adventure at the Cavesby Aleisha Yontz, 12

lue Jean Guys and Gals

My name is Aleisha Yontz. I am a mem-er of Blue Jean Guys and Gals 4-H Club.his is my fourth year in 4-H.Last summer I had an awesome opportu-

nity to participate in Ohio BeginnerShooters Camp. At shooter camp I got toshoot different kinds of guns and archery.

I tried my hand at archery, pistol, shot-gun. We learned about gun safety. Anotherclass was living history where we learnedbout different animal skins, animal trapsnd tracks. We stayed in a lodge with aathering room and fireplace. The camp was held at Ohio 4-H Shooting

unior Education Camp at Canter’s Cave in

ackson, Ohio. That’s about three hoursway from home. But that’s ok.All the adults at camp are super nice and

elpful. The camp was held at the end of une 2011. I got to attend this campecause I filled out the application andeceived a scholarship from Monroeounty Soil and Water Conservation. I

appreciate their sponsorship of this trip. Ihad a great time.

I encourage others to attend this camp. Ithelps develop independence and responsi-

bility. I met a lot of people from all over the

Aleisha Yontz

state and made lots of new friends. The weather was hot but we cooled off in

the pool; meal time was great. My favorite food was chicken tenders.

One of the best activities was going on ahike and seeing a beautiful waterfall and

huge caves.

by Alyssa Steed, 10 Beallsville Busy Bees

My name is Alyssa Steed and I am 10years old. I am in the fourth grade at

Woodsfield Elementary and in theBeallsville Busy Bees 4-H Club. I havebeen involved with the Monroe County 4-H program since I was in kindergarten, starting with the cloverbuds.

Last year was my first year in the 4-Hprogram in which I was able to take a proj-ect. I chose to take two projects. I took goats to the fair and I also took a beginnerdog project called “You and Your Dog”because I love dogs. During my dog skil-lathon, I was tested on my knowledge of the different dog breeds, parts of a dog, andsupplies used to take care of a dog.Princess, my dog, had to come with meduring my interview portion along with aposter I made. I was awarded with a plaquefor getting Grand Champion with my dogproject.

While I was there, I was able to watchother kids at different levels with their dogprojects and watch some very talented dogsat the dog show. I love 4-H and think kids

should join. There are many interesting

Alyssa Steed

projects that are available to take. Also, there are other rewarding things

like meeting new friends, doing group proj-ects with your 4-H club, 4-H camp and thefair. Put some fun in your summer and join

4-H.

A Great Experience For Allby Kelsey Parks, 18

ethel Country Kids

My name is Kelsey Parks and I have par-icipated in 4-H for the past 10 years.

Last year was my first year serving onunior Fairboard thanks to my friend

annah who talked me into joining. It was a great experience and I am glad I

ot involved. Serving on Junior Fairboardrequires a lot of responsibility and hardwork, but it is a fun and enjoyable experi-ence.

As a Junior Fairboard member, you arerequired to attend regular meetings andprepare activities for the fair. During thefair, you have to work livestock shows andtake charge in other events.

I encourage everyone to join because itteaches a person responsibility and leader-ship. The Junior Fairboard needs your helpso allow your 4-H experience to grow andoin the Junior Fairboard.

Quack, Quackby Spencer Jarrett, 10County Liners

Taking a market duck isn’t easy, but it’sreally fun because you can play with them, love them and take care of them. They arevery cute, lovable and huggable.

If you want a good duck you must makesure your duck is very clean before fairbecause a messy duck loses points anddoesn’t get a good placing.

Also make sure to be careful with yourduck’s wings, feet and chest area. You alsohave to make sure your duck is at weight soyou even get a chance to show your duck so make sure your duck’s weigh betweenfive to seven pounds.

The best way to weigh your ducks is witha household scale. It’s easier to use a digi-

tal scale. But taking a duck isn’t all work;it’s more fun than work.

You can also make a game by takingsome grain and holding it in your hand, goup to one of your ducks and have your duck get it out of your hand because it makes abetter bond between you and your duck.

Good luck and have fun.

Camp Counselor by Hanna Majors, 14

 Bits & Pieces

Last year I applied to be a camp coun-selor because I loved being a camper andwanted to experience being a counselor. Iabsolutely loved it.

I was responsible for 11 girls in my cabinbut I had another counselor helping me.

The best thing about camp is being withyour friends for a week and just having fun.4-H camp is a place to meet new people, enjoy the outdoors and get out of the housefor a few days.

One of my favorite things is campfires. At campfires you are separated into yourtribes and try to gain as many tribal pointsas possible through doing skits, jokes orbeing best dressed.

Camp is honestly one of the best places

to go for the summer because it’s fun, eventful and a place where you can just beyourself.

If you get the chance to attend camp thisyear as a camper or a counselor definitelydo it. I guarantee you will enjoy it.
