Offering Iconic BSA Programs to Boys & GirlsFamily Scouting is here and it’s offering ALL iconic BSA programs to both boys and

girls. This historic change stems from an overwhelming response from parents who want both their sons and daughters involved in innovative programs that also build character.

Right now, our Cub Scout program is open to boys and girls in grades K-5. Starting in February of 2019, both boys and girls ages 11-17 will be welcome to join Scouts BSA, previously known as our Boy Scout program. Just as before, these Scouts will earn merit badges, go camping and work toward the Eagle Scout Award. The organization name, Boy Scouts of America, will not change.

“…the Cub Scouting and the Scouts BSA programs will not be co-ed.”

It is important to note that the Cub Scouting and the Scouts BSA programs will not be co-ed. Instead, the BSA has introduced a unique model that builds on the benefits of a single-gender program while also providing character and leadership opportunities for both boys and girls. In Cub Scouts, girls and boys will be in an all-boy or all-girl den. In Scouts BSA, boys will form an all-boy troop while girls will form an all-girl troop.

FAMILY SCOUTING VIDEO SERIES

With a historic change like this, there’s bound to be a lot of questions. So, exactly what’s changing and what’s staying the same? We’ve created a new video series to help answer your questions about Family Scouting, including key implementation topics and how your unit can gear up to successfully execute the new enhancements in your Scouting program.

Friendship Caravan Brings Taste of Israeli Scouting to KCThe Israeli Scouts Friendship Caravan made tour stops in Kansas City again this summer. Two performances were held at the

Jewish Community Center in Overland Park in July and one at the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation and Theodore Naish Scout Reservation.

Each show included songs in Hebrew, English and Yiddish,

bringing about a lively, fun-filled taste of Israel and International Scouting to Kansas City. Each Friendship Caravan consists of five male and five female Israeli Scouts. This is the only organized and ongoing Scout entertainment corps program in the world.

First started in 1973, it is staffed entirely by Scouts, and travels throughout North America each summer. Learn more about the Israel Scouts Friendship Caravan at www.israelscouts.org/friendship-caravan.

Memories of Camp NaishBy Andy Dubill—Council Historian

The words Camp Naish evoke special memories for everyone who has ever camped there. A Scout’s camp is indeed a special place in his heart and mind. Several former campers shared their thoughts about the Theodore Naish Scout Reservation and the memories they will cherish for a lifetime.

Joe Combs—a Naish camper from 1935 through 1940—remembered, “I wish to give my thanks for the wonderful training that I was fortunate to receive from such a dedicated staff. This training helped me later in life. The Eagles from our troop learned their skills at Camp Naish and became officers in all the branches of service in World War II and went on to successful careers. These friendships continue today.”

Dave Evans remembers going to camp the week before staff week just to enjoy the peace and reverence of the grounds. “Naish is my home away from home,” said Evans. “It’s honestly my favorite place on earth.”

Jody Tucker said, “My dad camped there as a kid and his father was a Scoutmaster who took kids there for twenty years.” Jody’s grandfather

was active as a Scoutmaster and had some contact with Mrs. Naish regarding her donation of the property to the Boy Scouts.

If you have questions about Scouting history that would be good topics for future columns, email Andy Dubill at [email protected].

One Event, Once in a Lifetime2019 World Scout JamboreeIn 2019, the World Scouting Jamboree will be in the USA for the first time since 1967. The Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia will welcome Scouts from 165 different countries for 10 days. The WSJ’s goal is to be an educational event to promote peace and understanding among young people from diverse cultures. Each day will be filled with adventure, new friendship, and cultural experiences as Scouts meet fellow Scouts from around the world. The theme for the 24th Jamboree is “Unlock a New World” to showcase the new adventures, cultures and friendships that will be shared by Scouts from around the world. To learn how you can get involved and to join the Heart of America Council contingent, email Tom Johnson at [email protected].

Giving Honor Where Honor Is DueEagle Scout Project Honors Fallen OfficersSubmitted by: Public Affairs and Community Outreach—Johnson County Kansas Sheriff ’s Office

September 11, 2016 will be forever etched in the collective memory of the Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff ’s Office. In the early morning, Master

Deputy Brandon Collins conducted a traffic stop. While sitting in his vehicle verifying driver information, an intoxicated driver struck Brandon’s vehicle from behind killing him instantly. Master Deputy Collins lost his life that day serving his community.

In the months following Brandon’s death, Tribute Stone© donated a memorial audio device to pay homage to his memory. This device layers sound and information to tell the important story of not only Brandon’s death, but his life as well. This was placed temporarily in the Operations Building of the Sheriff ’s Office, but a more permanent location was desired in order to pay proper tribute.

Through the course of fate, several deputies were making a presentation at a local high school speaking to the Public Safety Academy students. The students in this program have committed to a life direction of public service through law enforcement and fire rescue. One of the students Luke Gwartney, approached the deputies and asked if the Sheriff ’s Office would have a project he could work on for his Eagle Scout rank.

Luke began the Scouting program in the 1st grade with Pack 3084. He is now part of Troop 83 in Olathe, Kansas and is entering his junior year of high school. Luke has demonstrated dedication and commitment to the Scout tradition of “Service, community engagement and leadership development” as he makes his way to Scouting’s highest rank, Eagle Scout.

The initial discussions on a new memorial led to a grassy area in front of the Operations building. Luke went to work on the design which included a granite bench, landscaping, lighting and the Tribute Stone that had been previously donated. A friend of Troop 83 took Luke’s design and used computer aided drafting technology to put the finishing touches on it. Luke’s project also included securing funding for the memorial and he was able to help raise more than $8,000 for the project.

Construction of the memorial started in March of 2018 and will be formally dedicated this September. Because of Luke’s dedication and leadership, this memorial will pay tribute to the sacrifice and brotherhood of law enforcement for many generations. When asked about the impact it will have Luke said, “I wanted to do something above and beyond just planting a tree or placing a bush. I wanted to honor the men and women of the Sheriff ’s Office.” He also said, “Looking back, my best memory will be the connection I have with the Sheriff ’s Office and the friends from Scouting I have made.”
