Lieutenants are required to devote five years to additional studies. Candidates for officership undergo an intensive two-year training in residence at Salvation Army colleges in Chicago; Suffern, New York; Atlanta; or Rancho Palos Verdes, California. The curriculum combines theory and field practice, including Salvation Army doctrine, sociology and social work, psychology, Salvation Army regulations, homiletics, public speaking, Bible studies, church history, composition, community relations, business administration, accounting, and vocal and instrumental music. are trained and commissioned to oversee operations of The Salvation Army. They proclaim the Gospel and serve as administrators, teachers, social workers, counselors, youth leaders and musicians. These men and women have dedicated their lives, skills and service completely to God. Lay members who subscribe to the doctrines of The Salvation Army are called soldiers,and along with officers, they are known as Salvationists. Below are the typical steps to becoming a commissioned officer. SALVATION ARMY OFFICERS Called by God to full-time ministry, specifically officership Active soldier in a local corps Recommended by Corps Officer Online application completed, appraisals and references gathered Preliminary application endorsed by Divisional and Territorial Candidates Councils Attend Future Officers Fellowship retreat Psychological testing and pre-training “Salvationism 101” initiated Reviewed and accepted by Territorial Candidates Council Graduate CFOT with AA degree Receive the rank of Cadet Commissioned as an Officer Bestowed rank of Lieutenant Receive first appointment Enter active ministry as an officer of The Salvation Army Ordained as a minister of the Gospel and Complete 22 months of officer training CFOT MISSION STATEMENT The purpose of the College for Officer Training is to develop men and women in spiritual maturity, character, knowledge and capabilities who will be able to sustain and advance the mission of The Salvation Army in the salvation of the world.
